It was issued by the Standards Council on November 27,2012, with an effective date of December 17, 2012, and supersedes all previous editions.This edition of NFPA1989 was approved as anAmerican National Stan

31、dard on December17, 2012.Origin and Development of NFPA 1989In 1999, the NFPA Standards Council assigned the responsibility of documents coveringbreathing air quality for respiratory protection to the Technical Committee on RespiratoryProtection and Personal Alarm Equipment. Previously, three docume

32、nts, NFPA 1404,NFPA1500, and NFPA1981, carried different requirements about breathing air quality.TheTechnicalCommitteedevelopedthisnewstandard,NFPA1989,withthegoalofestab-lishing a single set of requirements for the quality of breathing air used in atmosphere-supplying respirators, including open-c

33、ircuit self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA),used by fire and emergency services personnel.The first edition was acted on by the NFPAmembership at the Fall Meeting inAtlanta, GA,on November 20, 2002.In the second (2008) edition, the title of NFPA1989 was modifed to Standard on BreathingAir Quali

34、ty for Emergency Services Respiratory Protection. In that edition, a new Chapter 7 wasadded that specifies requirements for a compressed breathing system. The chapter coversinstallation, compressors, maintenance, and records for the system. All air quality require-ments and testing criteria were rev

35、iewed and refined to better assure high-quality breathingair for emergency services personnel.The 2008 edition of NFPA1989 was issued with an effective date of December 31, 2007.The 2013 (third) edition of NFPA 1989 includes new requirements for air storage cylin-ders, air sampling requirements, and
