30、ncy Response 2017 Edition This edition of NFPA 704, Standard System for the Identication of the Hazards of Materials for Emergency Response, was prepared by the Technical Committee on Classication and Properties of Hazardous Chemical Data. It was issued by the Standards Council on May 13, 2016, with

31、 an effective date of June 2, 2016, and supersedes all previous editions. This edition of NFPA 704 was approved as an American National Standard on June 2, 2016. Origin and Development of NFPA 704 Work on this standard originated in 1957. A great deal of the development work had been done by the NFP

32、A Sectional Committee on Classication, Labeling, and Properties of Flammable Liquids starting in 1952. Background data were published by the Association in its quarterly magazine in 1954, 1956, and 1958. The material in its present form was rst tentatively adopted in 1960. Ofcial adoption was secure

33、d in 1961, and revisions were adopted in 1964, 1966, 1969, 1975, 1980, and 1985. In the 1987 and 1990 editions, the Committee on Fire Hazards of Materials introduced quantitative guidelines for assigning the Health Hazard and Reactivity Hazard Ratings. The 1996 edition introduced additional quantita

34、tive guidelines and an amended denition for instability hazard rating, formerly reactivity hazard rating. The 2001 edition claried numerous topics, including the following: rating of mixtures; three options of how to rate areas with multiple chemical storage and use; location of signs; more quantita

35、tive criteria for ammability ratings for solids; and quantitative criteria for a ammability rating of zero, including introduction of a new test method. Guidance material was added for quantifying the degree of water reactivity. An annex was added to cover water reactivity and identication criteria,

36、 as well as additional information on ash point test methods. The 2007 edition claried numerous topics, including the special hazards quadrant and placement and hierarchy of symbols. The new simple asphyxiant (SA) designation and other optional symbols, as well as requirements for the classication o

37、f ammability rating for dusts, were added. The 2012 edition included reinstatement of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) hazard criterion to Table 7.2 as well as new guidance on the ammability hazard classication for aerosol products. The 2012 edition also included new text in Table 6.2 tha

38、t emphasized the use of Annex D to classify the ammability hazard of a nely divided solid. The 2016 edition has several key changes to text and added two explanatory annexes. Information related to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) exotherm onset temperature criteria was removed from Table 7.2

39、. Chapter 8 was modied to require the use of the SA symbol for liqueed carbon dioxide vapor withdrawal systems and where large quantities of dry ice are used in conned areas since there is currently no way of warning of this hazard in the existing NFPA 704. A new Annex G explains key differences bet

40、ween the OSHA HazCom2012 and NFPA 704 and claries the reasons why the NFPA 704 rating system will remain unchanged by the implementation of HazCom2012.IDENTIFICATION OF THE HAZARDS OF MATERIALS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE 704-2 2017 Edition A new Annex H provides sample placards that can be extracted int

41、o emergency response publications and training materials to ensure consistency. The NFPA 704 Committee dedicates the 2017 edition to the memory of Dr. Arthur A. Krawetz, who had been a Committee member since 1979 and who died during active service to the Committee, in November 2015. He was founder a

42、nd president of Phoenix Chemical Laboratory, Inc., in Chicago, engaged in analysis, research, and development, including characterizing chemical and physical properties, and quantifying performance expectancy of a wide variety of commercially important substances: fuels, lubricants, hydraulic uids,

43、greases, coatings, petrochemicals, additives, solvents, and rust preventatives. On learning of his passing, Arthurs colleagues on the committee expressed appreciation of his wisdom, expertise, leadership, humor, assertiveness, and general ability to contribute to the fun part of meeting in person fo
