CLOTH, AIRPLANE The Parachute Industry Association makes this document available for use by Industry and Government organizations that wish to apply this specification to their products. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Scope. This specification covers cotton cloth in the types

3、as specified below and is intended for use in the integral surface coverings of airplanes, as a base for a modified butyl rubber coated cloth, and in military personnel and cargo parachute systems. Unless otherwise noted herein or in the contract, in the event of a conflict between the text of this document and the references cited herein,

16、 the text of this document takes precedence. Nothing in this document, however, supersedes applicable laws and regulations unless a specific exemption has been obtained. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered, and environmentally prefera

17、ble materials should be used to the maximum extent possible, provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements, and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs. 3.2 Basic Material. The cloth shall be made from 2 ply combed yarns. Type I cloth shall be m

18、ade with yarns spun from mercerized cotton of a suitable staple length to assure conformance of the finished cloth to specification. When mercerized cotton has been used the yarn shall be mercerized under tension. Piece mercerization shall not be acceptable. Type II shall be made with yarns spun fro

19、m non-mercerized Supima cotton.3.3 Finish. Finishing shall consist of washing, framing and medium-cold calendaring. Calendaring shall be sufficient to lay any nap present and to provide a smooth even surface. Care should be taken to avoid excessive roll pressure on the cloth. 3.4 Color. The color sh

20、all be natural unless otherwise specified. 3.5 Physical properties. The finished cloth shall conform to the requirements in TABLE I when tested as specified in 4.4. The width of the finished cloth, inclusive of selvage, shall be as specified in TABLE II, unless otherwise required and specified in the procurement do

The finished cloth shall be furnished in rolls containing the lengths in TABLE III, or as otherwise specified for direct Government contracts. TABLE III Roll lengths. 3.7.1 Length of cut. No length shorter than 10 yards will be accepted. Short lengths shall be rolled together and the roll shall be properly labeled to indicate that it

26、is composed of short lengths. 3.8 Water soluble. The water soluble material of the finished cloth shall not contain more than 2.0 percent starch and protein, including chloroform and water-soluble material, when tested as specified in 4.4. 3.9 Copper and manganese. The finished cloth, when used as b

27、ase cloth for coating, shall contain no more than 0.003 percent copper and 0.0015 percent manganese when tested as specified in 4.4. 3.10 pH. The pH value of the water extract of the finished cloth shall be not less than 5.5 nor more than 9.0 when tested as specified in 4.4. 3.11 Compatibility with

28、dope. The finished cloth shall be compatible with aircraft dope as specified in 4.4.1. The dope shall dry within 45 minutes when applied to the finished cloth. This requirement applies for aircraft coverings only, unless otherwise specified. 3.12 Fiber identification. Each roll shall be labeled, tic

29、keted, or invoiced for fiber content in accordance with the Rules and Regulations under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act. 3.13 Workmanship. The finished cloth shall conform to the quality established by this specification. The occurrence of defects shall not exceed the applicable accept

30、able quality limits. 4. VERIFICATION 4.1 Classification for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order,

31、 the contractor may use his own or any other facility suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deem

32、ed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements. 4.1.1 Certificate of Compliance. Where Certificates of Compliance are submitted, the Government reserves the right to test such items to determine the validity of the certification. 4.2 Quality conformance inspection. S

33、ampling for inspection shall be performed in accordance with ANSI/ASQ Z1 .4, except where otherwise indicated. 4.2.1 Component and material inspection. In accordance with 4.1 above, components and materials shall be tested in accordance with all the requirements of referenced specifications, drawing

34、s and standards unless otherwise excluded, amended, modified or qualified in this specification or applicable procurement documents. In addition, the supplier shall submit a Certificate of Compliance identifying which type of cotton was used as specified in 1.1 and 3.2. Page 5 of 10 Copyright Protec

Defects found during this examination shall be classified in accordance with 4.2.2.1 through 4.2.2.3. 4.2.2.1 Yard-by-yard examination. The required yardage of each roll shall be examined and the visual defects classified as listed in T

36、ABLE IV. All defects found shall be counted regardless of their proximity one to another, except where two or more defects represent a single local condition of the cloth, in which case only one defect shall be counted for each warp wise yard or fraction thereof in which it occurs. The unit of produ

37、ct for this examination shall be one linear yard. The sample size for the yard-by-yard-examination shall be determined in accordance with ANSI/ASQ Z1 .4, Inspection Level II; and the Acceptable Quality Limit (AQL) shall be 2.5 major defects and 6.5 total defects per 100 units. The lot size shall be

38、expressed in units of one yard each. The number of rolls sampled shall be in accordance with TABLE V and approximately an equal number of yards shall be examined in each roll. Each defect listed below shall be counted not more than once in each roll examined. The unit of product shall be one roll. The sample size or number of rolls selected as sample

46、s, and the maximum number of defects acceptable, shall be shown in TABLE V. Overall defects: a. Color (when specified) off shade, shaded side to side, blotchy, mottled, two-sided b.
