PIA-TEST METHOD-6016F-2013 STRENGTH AND ELONGATION BREAKING OF CORDAGE NON-SPLICED SPECIMEN METHOD.pdf

、 The following commercial specification is originally adopted from the military document. Revision A includes all known accepted revisions, amendments, notices, and Department of Defense (DoD) engineering changes previously developed for this item. Revision B and forward include changes adopted to r

、eflect technology and design evolution. STRENGTH AND ELONGATION BREAKING OF CORDAGE; NON-SPLICED SPECIMEN METHOD The Parachute Industry Association makes this document available for use by the Industry and Government organizations that wish to apply this specification to their products. 1. SCOPE 1.1

、 Scope. This method is intended for determining the breaking strength and elongation of cordage that does not require eye-splices to be tested. 2. TEST SPECIMEN 2.1 Specimen. The specimen shall be a single length of the finished cordage not less than 24 inches (610 mm) long. 3. NUMBER OF DETERMINATI

、ONS 3.1 Number of determinations. Unless otherwise specified in the procurement document, five specimens shall be tested from each sample unit. 4. APPARATUS AND METHODS CITED 4.1 Apparatus. The apparatus for determining the breaking strength and elongation shall be as described in ASTM D 5034, excep

、t that the flat clamps shall be replaced with smooth clamps of spool or drum type, and the speed of the machine before the application of load to the specimen shall be 6 1 inch per minute (152 25mm/min.). Types of split drum clamps to be used are flat drums for flat cords and flat or grooved drums f

、or round cords; round cords are not to exceed the width of the grooved drums. In addition to meeting the requirements in ASTM D 5034, the apparatus shall have a test bed that is long enough to allow the test specimen to be fully extended to break without the need for readjustment. 4.1.1 Ink marker.

、The ink marker is for marking specimen to determine elongation. 4.1.2 Scale and dividers. A pair of dividers opening a distance not less than 12 inches (305 mm) and a scale graduated in divisions of 0.01 inch (0.3 mm). DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT: All Rights Reserved. 9、HOD-6016F 4.2 Method cited. The method cited shall be: ASTM D 5034 - Standard Test Method for Breaking Strength and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Grab Test) 5. PROCEDURE 5.1 Preparation of Specimen. Unless otherwise specified in the procurement document, material testing shall be performed under St

、andard Conditions as specified in ASTM D 1776. 5.1.1 The distance between the clamps or drums (gage length) at the start of the test shall be 10 inches (254 mm). 5.1.2 A minimum of two wraps of the specimen shall be placed around the clamps or drums of the machine and a load applied equal to 1 perce

、nt of the specified minimum breaking strength of the specimen being tested. The machine shall be stopped and the strain maintained on the specimen. 5.1.3 While the strain is being maintained on the specimen two fine ink marks shall be spaced 5 inches (127 mm) apart and neither mark shall be placed c

、loser than 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) to either clamp or drum. 5.1.4 The machine shall be restarted and the testing continued to completion. 5.2 Elongation. The elongation shall be measured during the determination of the breaking strength of the specimen. It shall be measured when the load applied during

、 the test is 75 percent of the specified minimum breaking strength of the cordage being tested. The use of an electronic or mechanical extensometer, in place of divider, while doing the elongation of the product, will be allowed as long as all the other requirements of this test method are met. 5.2.

、1 When the specimen is pulled to 75 percent of the minimum breaking strength of the cordage being tested, the machine may be stopped and the distance between the two fine marks on the specimen is measured and recorded. The distance “E”, in inches (mm), between the marks shall be measured to the near

、est 0.05 inch (1.3 mm). 5.3 Breaking strength. If the machine is stopped to measure the elongation it shall be restarted and the load increased until the specimen ruptures. 5.3.1 If a specimen slips between the jaws, breaks in the jaws, or for any reason of machine malfunction, an individual measure

、ment falls markedly below the apparent average test results, such a measurement shall be disregarded and another specimen shall be tested from the same sample unit. 5.4 Calculation. The elongation shall be calculated as follows: Elongation percent = E-5 inches (127 mm) x 100 5 inches (127 mm) Where

、E = Distance between the marks, in inches (mm), when the load is 75 percent of the specified minimum breaking strength of the cordage being tested. 6. REPORT 6.1 Elongation. The elongation shall be reported as required in the cord specification. If no reporting method is identified, the elongation f

、or each sample unit shall be the average of the specimens tested and reported to the nearest 0.1 percent. Page 2 of 3 Copyright Protected: Do Not Copy!PIA-TEST METHOD-6016F 6.2 Breaking strength. The breaking strength shall be reported as required in the cord specification. If no reporting method is

、 identified, the breaking strength for each sample unit shall be the average of the specimens tested and shall be reported to an accuracy of 0.5 percent of the indicated (reported) breaking strength. 6.3 Calculation of average reporting. Each individual value used to calculate the average (for elong
