2、) Abstract: Transferring into 2 D assembly drawings became difficult to complete in a timely fashion. Engineering change orders would stack up thus resulting in fragmented as-built configuration. Many drawings did not incorporate the change orders.Description of Driving Event: Pro-Engineer CAD softw
3、are and Windchill configuration management software were used in combination to create and manage CAD files. We migrated to Windchill half way through the project and later found that Windchill uses a large amount of computer memory to track files. The design team also lacked large assembly file man
4、agement skills. We needed more powerful computers; however, only some of the employees received them in a timely manner. On ARES 1-X USS, model and drawing file sizes grew very fast after the conceptual stage passed. Designers struggled to complete assembly drawings. Computer power and file manageme
5、nt techniques were lagging as the schedule pressure continued. Much time was spent waiting for frozen computers to update so the next change could be made. Internal CAD support was insufficient to address our productivity issues. Additional CAD support was not funded.Lesson(s) Learned: The design an
6、d drawing team needs adequate training and expert consultation to deal with problems that arise. While the project was successfully completed, the CAD environment caused undue stress, loss of productivity and low morale. The CAD environment setup, hardware, software and network should
8、be thoroughly evaluated to ensure capability to handle very large file sizes such as assembly drawings necessary for future flight projects. This assessment should be conducted by utilizing large system level drawings typical of the new work that NASA is currently involved in, especially Constellati
9、on. In addition, the designers need to be involved in the process of setting up the CAD environment, including requirements such as: knowledgeable parties, expertise, infrastructure, equipment, softwareetc. This assessment can be used as a guide to evaluate the current CAD environment capability to
10、meet future work needs. For example, 060213MFA000 is a USS top level drawing that exemplifies the difficulties GRC had with large drawings. This is primarily a system level drawing, typical of future work, such as ARES V. It is recommended that this drawing be used to assess the current GRC CAD envi
