2、selected projects with an opportunity to experience reduced-gravity conditions for 20-to-30-second intervals in an aircraft flying repeated parabolic trajectories. Proposals were solicited in January of 2009 for technologies that could benefit from testing in this space environment. Six KSC-related

3、projects were selected to fly in August of 2009. Projects were responsible for transporting their test equipment to the flight locations, verifying their test equipment was flightworthy, and staffing their experiments during flight. Personnel participating in the flights had to undergo training and

4、meet certain medical criteria. Although all the experiments were executed without any problems, subsequent discussions revealed areas of improvement that could be incorporated into future planning. These suggestions included preparing a list of flight-qualified participants that could be called in c

5、ase the scheduled people could not carry out their assigned duties and having a central point of contact between each Center and HQ to prevent duplication of effort if multiple projects were coming from one NASA center. Description of Driving Event: NASAs Facilitated Access to the Space Environment

6、Technology Development and Training Program (FAST) is designed to incorporate new technologies into NASAs flight programs and other commercial space applications. FAST provides an opportunity to demonstrate the performance of emerging technologies in the zero-gravity environment of Earth orbit or th

7、e reduced gravity environment of the Moon or Mars. Projects were responsible for preparing their test equipment to

8、 meet the requirements of flight, transporting their experiments to the flight location, and staffing the experiment as required during the actual flights. Personnel wishing to fly underwent medical exams and training prior to taking part in the reduced-gravity flights. The flight experiments were c

9、arried out successfully. Although participants were very pleased with the overall process, some opportunities for improvement were identified during post-flight discussions. Lesson(s) Learned: Developing and maintaining a flight-qualified participant list would have been very useful in case a planne

10、d experiment team member was not able to take part. With an available qualified participant list, the experiment team would have an opportunity to quickly reference the list and select an alternate member to assume the duties and responsibilities of the original participant. Another lesson learned w

11、as that it would be advantageous to have a single point of contact for a NASA Center with multiple experiments flying. This single point of contact could facilitate the logistics of experiment flight-readiness, transportation, and could maintain the qualified participant list. This would reduce or e

12、liminate a duplication of effort when multiple experiment teams are trying to independently accomplish the same things. Recommendation(s): Identify a Center point of contact if a NASA center has multiple experiments selected for the FAST program. Have that person be responsible for all nonscientific

13、 preparations for flight. Develop and maintain a flight-qualified participant list that can be referenced if the situation arises where an assigned team member is not able to carry out their duties.
