REG NASA-LLIS-6148-2012 Lessons Learned - Continuous Hazardous Gas Monitoring In The Shuttle Aft During Flight.pdf

、Public Lessons Learned Entry: 6148 Lesson Info: Lesson Number: 6148 Lesson Date: 2010-11-1 Submitting Organization: MSFC Submitted by: Kristen Kinder Subject: Continuous Hazardous Gas Monitoring In The Shuttle Aft During Flight Abstract: The Space Shuttle Orbiter aft hazardous gas grab bottles provi

、ded an indication of gas leak in specific locations in the Orbiter during ascent and data was obtained post mission. Future vehicles need to include real-time monitoring technology. Description of Driving Event: Initially, the Space Shuttle Orbiter aft hazardous gas grab bottles that were installed

、on the 50-1 and 50-2 doors were an afterthought as Criticality 3 instrumentation, yet the need for them never went away. Grab bottles provide an indication of gas leak in specific locations in the Orbiter during ascent. The facility hazardous gas detection system continuously monitors critical areas

、 throughout the loading process. In comparison, the flight system only takes 6 snap shots in time to “grab” (obtain) a sample of the atmosphere in the aft of the Orbiter during powered ascent. The grab bottles remain in place until after the Orbiter returns from the mission and the bottles can be re

、moved and taken to the lab to analyze the air samples. Obtaining the data post mission does not support the need to verify the quality of the air or presence of hazardous gas leakage in the Orbiter on orbit. Lesson(s) Learned: Grab bottle technology is outdated and ineffective in providing gas leak

、detection during ascent. Near continuous sampling during ascent or on orbit is possible with newer technology and could provide data for anomaly resolution if a situation arises. The need for this type of sensing has not diminished in the 30 year Shuttle Program. Recommendation(s): A wireless smart

、hazardous gas leak detection system has been developed where miniature leak detectors can be mounted anywhere a detector is required. The signal from these detectors can be sent wirelessly to a central monitor. From here the output can be transmitted to the ground for real-time monitoring of any pot

、ential leaks in the aft compartment during ascent. Future vehicles need to include this technology, because if a leak occurs on an expendable vehicle, you need to use the data to try and determine where the leak was so you can fix it for later flights. Evidence of Recurrence Control Effectiveness: N
