2、 zones. STS plume and aerodynamic heating data books used body point numbers that were inconsistent in length and are very occasionally repeated. This can cause confusion for users of these environments. Description of Driving Event: When STS environments were reviewed and used, it became apparent t
3、hat some body point numbers are 3 digits long, while others are 4, 5, or even 6 digits in length. No underlying system was employed throughout the life of the program. In a few instances, duplicate body point numbers were used for elements such as the Orbiter and the External Tank. This is highly un
4、desirable because it could cause confusion, or even misapplication of inappropriate design environments. In the worst case, this could lead to a catastrophic event if not caught during the design process. Lesson(s) Learned: It is preferable to use a numbering system that has enough capacity to evolv
5、e with the need for additional body points as the system is utilized and operated. This system needs to be carefully described early in a program life cycle. Users of the system must exercise discipline to “stick with” this system, even when the expedient path might tempt them to do otherwise. Recom
6、mendation(s): Ares and Space Launch System (SLS) external thermal environments are developed using a six digit numbering system that is tied to the axial and circumferential location on the vehicle, and the type of body point being analyzed. This system has proven adaptable to both programs. This sy
