5、RATIONALESuccessful use of fiber optic interconnects in high-performance platforms and applications depend on viable technologies for their repair and installation. Splicing is often desirable, either to repair a damaged interconnect or to install it, particularly where it is difficult or impossible

6、 to access all necessary locations for complete removal and replacement. However, reliable aerospace cable splices must endure conditions as adverse as those for which the original cable was specified. In addition, the splicing technology must be usable with a high degree of reliability under diffic

7、ult aerospace working conditions. Mechanical splices have shown some promise for the repair of multi-mode aerospace fiber cables, but they face daunting difficulties in splicing single mode fiber cables, which are being ever more seriously considered for new and upgraded systems. Fusion splicing has

8、 long been accepted in the telecom industry for making the highest performance fiber splices, both single mode and multi-mode, but the technology has not yet been found adaptable to stricter aerospace requirements. This standard is intended to define fusion splicers suitable for these requirements.

9、1. SCOPE This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines fiber optic fusion splicers acceptable for the installation and repair of fiber optic interconnects in aerospace applications. Two different application environments are defined, depending on whether there is risk of flammable vapor or hazardous atmo

10、sphere being present. Equipment suited to flammable or hazardous environments may be over specified for factory, depot, or other relatively safe environments. To address these different application environments, two types of fusion splicer will be specified in applicable detail specifications: Type

11、I. For hazardous environments specifically including potentially flammable or explosive atmospheres. Type II. For environments in which it is established that there is no risk of flammable or explosive vapors being present. 2. REFERENCES 2.1 Applicable Documents The following publications form a par

44、to denote multiple items of equipment.FAILURE: Equipment failure as used herein is any departure from the required performance or operation outside of the required bounds (not correctable by normal use of the operating controls), or deviation from the criteria of 4.5 after the test is initiated.INTE

45、RMITTENT AND SHORT-TIME OPERATION: Intermittent and short-time operation are alternating periods of operation for the specified time followed by 15 minutes of non-operation.LOT: The size of a lot is that quantity of units from each individual production run that is specifically set aside for deliver

46、yto the Government (i.e., if a given production run consists of 1000 units of which ISO are set aside for delivery to the Government, the lot size would be ISO). Portions of separate production runs will not be combined into a single lot but will be treated as individual lots.NONREPAIRABLE SUBASSEMB

47、LY: A component, module, or subassembly is nonrepairable if the physical nature of the item is such that the item cannot be economically or feasibly repaired due to the excessive cost of material and labor required to affect such repair. This excessive cost is normally considered to be 65% or greate

48、r of the acquisition cost of the item. Examples of nonrepairable subassemblies are: (a) an integrated circuit, (b) a printed circuit card wherein the components and card are sealed in a hard thermosetting plastic compound, and (c) a module wherein all printed circuit cards or components are sealed i

49、n a hard thermosetting plastic compound or the module is hermetically sealed.PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS OF THE TEST EQUIPMENT: Wherever referenced in this specification, the performance requirements of the test equipment means the satisfactory performance of all electrical and mechanical characteristics under the conditioning, destructive, and accelerated tests specified by the detail specification or purchase des
