、ight of Aluminum Sheet Samples After Chemical Milling RATIONALE This new SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines the test method and limits for the bow height of aluminum sheet samples after chemical milling. 1. SCOPE 1.1 The results of this test are intended to be a useful indication of the resistance
、to distortion of bare or two-side Alclad, flat sheet aluminum used in chemical milling applications. 1.2 This specification covers requirements for testing wrought aluminum alloy raw material in the form of sheet by producers. 1.3 This Aerospace Standard applies only to heat treated, flat sheet in t
、he heat treated condition (T3X, T6X, T7X, or T8X) temper, and having thicknesses in the range 0.032 to 0.249 inch (0.8 to 6.3 mm). Purchasers are encouraged to contact producers with questions on the availability of material (i.e. alloy/temper/width) that is capable of meeting the requirements of th
、is standard. Product having the capability prescribed by this specification is available in limited quantities and tempers because of the special processing required. NOTE: Sheet in the coiled form cannot be supplied to this specification. 1.4 This specification is used to indicate the resistance to
、 distortion of bare and two-side Alclad, flat sheet aluminum that will be chemically milled (often in the manufacture of aircraft skin panels). 1.5 This Aerospace Standard is intended to be a supplemental requirement added to the aluminum sheet specification purchase orders for product which is to b
、e used in chemical milling operations. 2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS The following publications form a part of this document to the extent specified herein. PROCEDURE 4.1 Condition This test is applied to material in final heat treated temper condition. 4.2 Test Specimens 4.2.1 Test specimens shall be cut samples having dimensions of 2.0 inches x 12.0 i
、nches (50 mm x 300 mm), with the length parallel to the rolling direction of the sheet. Remove saw burrs from test specimen, if necessary, to facilitate accurate bow height measurements. 4.2.2 If the specimen is not flat, measure the height of the bow, h1, according to requirements of 4.5.1. 4.2.3 I
、nitial bow height h1 shall not exceed 0.060 inch (1.50 mm). 4.2.4 Retain an adjoining portion of the sheet for use as an initial thickness reference until the completion of the test. 4.3 Application of Masking Material 4.3.1 The side of the test specimen, which is not to be chemically milled, shall
、be protected with maskant (e.g., tape, sealant or a suitable paint) applied per the maskants instructions. 4.3.2 If the test specimen is not flat, apply the maskant to the convex side and chemically mill the concave side. Appropriate tooling or other fixturing shall be used to allow uniform etching over the entire unprotected side. 4.4.3 After etching, test specimens shall be rinsed in water, and then neutralized by immersion in a 30 to 70% by volume HNO3 solution, and given a final rinse
、in water. 4.5 Bow Height Measurement The initial and final bow of the specimen shall be measured by placing the test specimen on a hard, flat surface with no pressure other than the weight of the specimen. 4.5.1 Initial Measurement - Before Chemical Milling 4.5.1.1 Before applying the maskant, place
、 the specimen on a flat surface with the with the test specimens ends in contact with the flat surface (i.e., test specimen concave side facing down). 4.5.1.2 Measure the maximum bow height found along the length of the test specimen by measuring the gap between the flat surface and the bottom of th
、e specimen at the edge of the test specimen. Measure the bow height to at least the nearest 0.001 inch (0.025 mm) and report the bow height to the nearest 0.01 inch (0.25 mm) in accordance with the rounding rules of ASTM E29. 4.5.2 Final Measurement - After Chemical Milling 4.5.2.1 Remove the maskan
、t per the manufacturers instruction, taking care to avoid bending the sample. 4.5.2.2 Place the specimen with the maskant removed on a hard, flat surface with the test specimens ends in contact with the flat surface (i.e., test specimen concave side facing down). 4.5.2.3 Measure the maximum bow heig
、ht found along the length of the test specimen by measuring the gap between the flat surface and the bottom of the specimen at the edge of the test specimen. Measure the bow height to at least the nearest 0.001 inch (0.025 mm) and report the bow height to the nearest 0.01 inch (0.25 mm) in accordanc
、e with the rounding rules of ASTM E29. 4.5.2.4 The bow height change of the specimen shall meet the requirements of Tables 1 or Table 2 in 3.2. 5. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISONS 5.1 Responsibility for Inspection 5.2 The producer of sheet shall supply all samples for producers tests and shall be respons
