Minor changes were also made to the scope to reflect the recent development

、of SAE J2825 for roadside enforcement of sound pressure levels for on-highway motorcycles. 1. SCOPE This SAE Standard establishes the test procedure, environment, and instrumentation for determining the exhaust sound pressure levels of motorcycles under stationary conditions. Since initial publicati

、on, it has been successfully applied to regulation and monitoring of sound pressure levels of off-highway vehicles, and that remains its recommended application. Users of SAE J1287 for the purpose of roadside enforcement of sound pressure levels for on-highway motorcycles have reported difficulties

、with its implementation in that application. In response, SAE J2825 was developed, and is recommended for measurement of exhaust sound pressure levels of stationary on-highway motorcycles. Care must be taken not to confuse stationary sound pressure levels with total motorcycle sound pressure levels.

、 This test does not evaluate total motorcycle sound during operation. For this purpose, SAE J331 or SAE J47 is recommended. Any allowable sound limits (dBA) set in relation to SAE J1287 for exhaust sound pressure level should not conflict with the allowable sound limits (dBA) for total sound pressur

GENERAL COMMENTS 8.1 It is essential that persons conducting the test be knowledgeable of the test procedure and use of the instrumentation. 8.2 Proper use of all test instruments is essential to

、 obtain valid measurements. Operating manuals or other literature furnished by the instrument manufacturer should be referred to, for both recommended operation of the instrument and precautions to be observed. 8.3 Specific Items for Consideration 8.3.1 The type of microphone, its directional respon

、se characteristics, and its orientation relative to the source of sound. 8.3.2 The effects of ambient weather conditions on the performance of all instruments (for instance, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure). 8.3.3 Proper acoustical calibration procedure to include the influence of ext

、ension cables, etc. 8.4 Although either Type 1 or Type 2 sound level meters may be used with this procedure, it is suggested that a Type 1 instrument be considered as it generally has lesser overall tolerance, which can result in more accurate measurements. 8.5 The use of the word “shall“ in the pro

、cedure is to be understood as obligatory. The use of the word “should“ is to be understood as advisory. The use of the word “may“ is to be understood as permissive. 9. NOTES 9.1 Revision Indicator A change bar (l) located in the left margin is for the convenience of the user in locating areas where

、technical revisions, not editorial changes, have been made to the previous issue of this document. An (R) symbol to the left of the document title indicates a complete revision of the document, including technical revisions. Change bars and (R) are not used in original publications, nor in documents

PREPARED BY THE SAE MOTORCYCLE TECHNICAL STEERING COMMITTEE SAE INTERNATIONAL J1287 APR2017 Page 6 of 7 APPENDIX A This Appendix adds supplementary engineering reference data and educational material and is not an integral part of the basic technical report. Thi

、s procedure has been put to a variety of uses, including exhaust system certification, enforcement of in-use motorcycle standards for both on and off-road motorcycles, enforcement of sound limits at race venues and competitive events, and evaluating the sound pressure level of ATVs. It is beyond the

、 scope of the standard to suggest limit sound pressure levels, or alternative engine test speeds, for various types of vehicles. If tests are made using variations of test parameters specified in this standard, a description of any variations from this standard shall be reported along with test resu

、lts obtained. Such results shall not be reported as having been obtained according to the standard conditions of this document, and shall not state “tested according to SAE J1287”. A.1 INSTRUMENT SELECTION Type 1 instrumentation, which generally can provide the most accurate and repeatable measureme

、nts, should be used when the need for accuracy is great, such as certification of exhaust systems, or enforcement action which may result in some form of penalty. Type 2 instrumentation is appropriate for some enforcement work, such as a preliminary screening test, or for general data gathering. On

、the other hand, instrumentation which is less precise than Type 1 or Type 2 may be appropriate in cases such as at a racetrack or motorcycle park, when the primary interest is securing some sound reduction from the motorcycles operated within, and not measuring for the purpose of meeting specific ma

、ximum sound limits. Selection of equipment should reflect the need for accuracy (particularly considering any consequences) balanced against cost. Caution should be exercised, however, when selecting equipment which does not conform to ANSI standards. Experience with consumer electronic types of sou

、nd level meters indicates most such meters do not possess operating characteristics of sufficient accuracy or consistency to yield meaningful results. Meters which meet obsolete ANSI S1.4 Type 3 specifications, however, are sufficiently accurate for less demanding applications such as racetrack enfo

、rcement. For the procedure specified in 6.1.1 slow dynamic response is specified, but fast dynamic response may be used. If slow response is not available for the meter used, a 1/2 second Leq is an acceptable alternative to slow response. Use of fast response with a digital meter may cause reading d

、ifficulty and associated degradation of measurement accuracy and repeatability, unless a means is available to hold a particular reading, e.g., maximum level, level at a specified rpm, etc. A.2 PROCEDURE When making comparison measurements where a single variable is to be evaluated, such as comparing the sound pressure level of two different exhaust systems on the same vehicle, selection of the correct engine speed
