Description3.1 Testing ProcedureThe starter shall be mounted in a test stand as shown schematically in Figure 1.Performance curves are established by
、 running the starting motor in one of two methods. Method A involvesplotting a curve from discrete points while Method B is achieved by operating the motor in a continuous modewhile the output is automatically recorded and/or plotted. Deviation from either of these two methods shall benoted on the p
、erformance curve. Air pressure shall be measured at the starter inlet port and adjusted asrequired to maintain a constant value during the entire test. The air pressure should not exceed therecommendation of the manufacturer. All torque measurements should be reflected to the starter output shaft.Am
、bient air temperature should be recorded. The supply air moisture and lubricant content should be noted. All data shall be reduced to the standard conditions of 1 Bar (14.7 psig) and 21 C (70 F).3.1.1 TEST METHOD ARun the starting motor at various discrete torque loads and record the air inlet and ex
、haustpressure, air temperature, torque, air flow, and speed. Sufficient points should be recorded and a linearregression method should be used to generate smooth torque, power, and flow curves from the respectivedata points. A typical performance curve is shown in Figure 2.SAE J2437 Issued DEC1998-2

、 stall point. Data points are recorded at appropriate speeds throughoutthe performance range. The resulting curve is identical to that developed from Method A.3.2 TemperaturePerformance curves can be generated at ambient temperature conditions of 40, 29, 7, 21,and 82 C (40, 20, 20, 70, and 180 F). S
、tandard data is taken at 21 C (70 F).3.3 PressuresIt is recommended that performance curves be developed at standard inlet pressures of 2, 4, 6, 8,10, 12, 15, 20, and 30 Bar (30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 225, 290, and 435 psig).3.4 InstrumentationThe air pressure sensor and air flow meter shall have a
、n accuracy of 1% of the full scalereading (full scale value not to exceed the maximum performance reading by more than 50%.) The speedsensing device and the torque measuring device shall have an accuracy of 1% of the actual reading.3.5 Cranking SpeedThe required engine cranking speed can be matched
、to the starter by the starter pinion andengine ring gear ratio. The starter speed at maximum power shall be equal to or greater than the requiredreflected engine cranking start speed. Ambient conditions at the application should, of course, be considered.PREPARED BY THE SAE STARTER MOTOR STANDARDS C
、OMMITTEESAE J2437 Issued DEC1998RationalePrior to 1996, SAE addressed only a test procedure for generating performance curves for electricstarting motors, SAE J544. Review of this technical report indicated that a broader view of startingmotors was needed that involved a recommended test procedure f

SAE J2437 addresses this issue.Relationship of SAE Standard to ISO StandardNot available.ApplicationThis SAE Recommended Practice provides standardized criteria for testing air starter motors.Reference SectionSAE J543Starting Motor Pinions and Ring GearsSAE J544Electric Starting Motor Test ProcedureISO 7650Commercial vehicles and busesMounting dimensions for starter motors of type 1, 2, 3, and 4Developed by the SAE Starter Motor Standards Committee
