、f a clause is/are, unless otherwise stated, the number(s) of the relevant clause(s) of SABS 1200 GE. START OF CONSTRUCTION GENERAL. For the purposes of this part of the code, contract administration starts with instructions to the contractor to commence work as set out in Subclause 4.1 of Section 0.

、 IMMEDIATELY AETER THE HANDING OVER OF THE SITE GENERAL. The recommendations of Section G should be applied, as relevant. DURING CONSTRUCTION METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION Prevention of Discoloration when Stacking (Subclause 4.5). Timber or rope separation pieces should not be used as they may stain the c

、oncrete. Handling and Lifting (Subclause 5.8.1). Care should be taken to avoid damage to units or adjoining structures during movement and lifting. Consider the following factors which may cause damage to units during transportation: a) Distortion of the transporting vehicle; b) centrifugal force du

、e to cornering; c) oscillation (a slim unit may flex (vertically or horizontally) sufficiently to cause damage); d) chafing. Chipped Corners (Subclause 5.4.3). See Subclause 3.2.6.2 of Section G for advice on methods of patching. Preforming Reinforcement Cages (Subclause 5.5.1). The use of unskilled

、 welders should be avoided because they often burn pits into one or other of the bars when spot welding small bars. The presence of such pits can have dangerous consequences. Steam and Heat Curing (Subclause 5.6.2). Account should be taken of the following comments: a) In practice the contractor (ma

、nufacturer) is wholly responsible for ensuring that units subjected to steam or heat curing are cured well enough to perform their intended purpose because the engineer, in general, does not have the experience necessary to enable him to approve, or comment on, steam curing methods or casting in hea

、ted moulds. b) The South African Transport Services report that steam curing has, on several occasions, caused precast members to crack or to be otherwise weakened. The SATS and specialist consultants consider that compliance with the requirements of Subclause 5.6.2 of SABS 1200 GE is essential as i

、t is most important not to raise the temperature of concrete too soon after casting, or to raise or lower the temperature too rapidly. Demoulding (Subclause 5.7). The minimum time required before the sides of moulds are removed is a function of the concrete mix. With some mixes the sides can be remo

Storage (Subclause 5.8.1.5). When a stack is several units high, the units should be vertically above each other t

、o prevent bending stresses in any unit. Projecting Reinforcement. Where necessary, precautions should be taken to prevent rust stains caused by projecting reinforcement and to minimize efflorescence. Keeping Units Drained and Free of W=. Because trapped water can cause staining, and the freezing of

、trapped water can cause severe damage, units should be so stacked that they drain freely. ADMINISTRATION Safety of Stagings, etc. (Subclauses 5.0.2 and 5.8.3). Attention is directed to the various requirements of the Factories, Machinery and Building Work Act and to regulations governing temporary w

Unless he has had more experience of steam or heat curing than the contractor, the engineer should limit his observations to the end result of the curing process (see 3.1.5 above). Manufacturing Techniques and Desicp Details.

、 When selecting a manufacturin process, the contractor should consider the techniques described in Precast Concrete in Architecture1?. Where the contractor is responsible for design details, particularly weatherproofing and fixings, he should take appropriate action in terms of Clause 2 of Section G

、E of Part 3 of the code. QUALITY CONTROL AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS The relevant recommendations of SABS 0157) should be applied to the quality assurance and process control aspects of the manufacture and construction of precast concrete. 1) by A E J Morris, published by George Goodwin, London, 1978. 2) Quality management systems. sabs pta
