、 Considerations during construction (See the sections of this part of the code covering the standardized specifications that form part of the contract, and see also 2.2 below.) 2.1 Details of methods Action should be taken to give effect to the objectives set out in 2.2.1 below. 2.2 Contract adminis

、tratioh 2.2.1 Testing (clause 7) The purpose of testing in terms of clause 7 of each standardized specification relating to roads is to ensure that the quality of the whole of the finished road is adequate for the purpose for which it was designed, by verifying that the various components comply wit

、h the engineers specifications. In order to achieve this purpose, a) the contractor is required to carry out sufficient random checks to satisfy himself that the materials he has supplied and the workmanship he has produced in respect of each layer of the road comply with the specifications, and b)

、when advised by the contractor that the whole of each layer does so comply, the engineer is obliged to verify compliance by means of random checks. Clearly each party should select the apparently weakest points for random checks. (See also 3.9 of section D).) 2.2.2 Sand Where the specified degree of

、 relative compaction is not being achieved on site, the percentage passing the 0,075 mm sieve should be determined and trial sections should be done to establish the relative compaction that is achievable (see 1 .l .6 of section M of SABS 0120-3). 2.2.3 Addition of fines (3.3.3) While the addition o

、f fines may be permitted to improve grading or plasticity (or both), this action should not adversely affect the materials strength, load-bearing characteristics or compliance with any of the other specified properties. Screening out of plastic fines and their replacement with suitable fines may be

、considered. 2.2.4 Size, crushed materials (3.3.3) The maximum particle size specified for crushed material has a significant effect on the crushing plant required. A single-stage crusher generally only removes oversize down to 75 mm and allows no control of grading. For smaller maximum sizes and gra

、ding control, the use of a two-stage crusher or screening (or both) becomes necessary. For the production of G1 and G2 material, a sophisticated multi-stage crusher and screening process is usually required. 2.2.5 Grading modulus (3.3.3, table 38) The upper limits for grading moduli have been set at

、 a level where good performance can be expected. Some relaxation of these values may be possible, provided that reasonable uniformity and satisfactory relative compaction are achieved. 3 Quality control and other considerations (See the sections of this part of the code relating to the standardized specifications that form part of the contract.) 1) Earthworks. 1 sabs pta
