9、, 2 and 3. Preface The purpose of this specification is to establish standards of dimension, profile, and grade on which architects and users can base the evaluation of their requirements. The grades as laid down in the specification are based on present market preferences. Where a specific appearan

10、ce as regards knottyness, discoloration (blue stain), resinous streaks, etc. is required, non-compliance with the appropriate requirements should be specified for a given grade. If non-specified features are required, such as wavy grain, colouring, lustre, etc., users may select on the basis of thes

11、e features within a grade. Users should note that whereas hardwood ceiling or panelling boards may be ordered to this specification, the percentage of sapwood permissible in a board has not been laid down. In general, users are warned that even where the species of timber and the grade for two lots

12、of boards are identical, the appearance of the boards may be different because of inherent variations in the raw material. The grades covered by this specification have been designed to meet with functional requirements of ceiling and panelling boards. The grade requirements of this specification ma

16、grades of profiled boards (planed or planed and sanded) manufactured from hardwood or softwood timber and intended for use in ceilings or panelling. NOTE a) The titles of standards referred to by number in the specification are given in appendix A. b) Requirements that must or may be specified by th

17、e purchaser and those that may be agreed upon are listed in appendix B. c) Recommended standard profiles for ceiling and panelling boards and profile dimensions are given in appendix C. d) Assessment of compliance with the requirements of 4.10 and certain requirements of 4.8 requires special agreeme

18、nt between supplier and purchaser. 26、 5 3.2 Permissible defects 3.2.1 Face-side When inspected in accordance with 7.1, the face-side or (in the case of a board of which either of two faces may be used as the face-side) the worse face of a board shall not contain more than a combination of the maxima of permissible defects laid down in

27、tables 1 and 2, appropriate to the grade. 35、 Amdt 2; amdt 3 SANS 1039:2008 Edition 1.3 7 3.2.2 Profile area The profile area of a board shall be free of loose knots, knot-holes, and chipped and broken areas that are visible on the matched face side or that cause an individual void of length exceeding 50 mm or voids whose sum of lengths in the

36、 worst 1 m length of board exceeds 150 mm. 3.2.3 Back The back of a board may have defects such as knots (including chipped, checked, or split knots, or any combination of these), knot-holes, checks, gum veins, machine skips, pith, and wane, provided that they a) do not extend beyond the profile are

37、a on the face-side, or (in the case of a board of which either of two faces may be used as the face-side) on either face; and b) will not affect the proper seating of the board. 3.3 Other defects A board shall be free from a) visible cross fracture and brittle heart (compression breaks); b) honeycom

38、bing; c) decay other than decay in knots; d) insect damage (except that damage caused by needle trace borers shall be allowed in knotty grade); and e) ring shake. 4 Physical requirements 4.1 Dimensions The dimensions of a board, measured in accordance with 7.3 and subject to the appropriate toleranc

39、es given in 4.2, shall be in accordance with the following, the dimension required being in each case as specified by the purchaser: a) Length 1) Plain ended boards. Any length that is not less than 0,9 m, and is a multiple of 0,30 m Amdt 2 2) End-matched boards i) Ceiling boards. Any length that is

40、 not less than 0,45 m ii) Panelling boards. Any length that is not less than 0,60 m b) Width of face. 50 mm, 65 mm, 75 mm, 102 mm, or 140 mm SANS 1039:2008 Edition 1.3 8 c) Thickness 1) Ceiling boards. 12 mm or 16 mm 2) Panelling boards. 12 mm, 16 mm, or 22 mm 4.2 Tolerances on dimensions The tolera

41、nces on dimensions shall be as follows: a) Length (plain ended boards). 500+mm b) Width of face. 2 mm, provided that the variation in a single board shall not exceed 0,5 mm c) Thickness. 0,5 mm 4.3 Profiles The profile of a board and the profile dimensions shall be as specified by the purchaser. Whe

42、re a profile with tongue and groove is specified, it shall be such as to give a tight sliding fit and a flush joint. NOTE Recommended profiles and dimensions are given in appendix C. 4.4 Finish The face-side, back, and edges of a board shall have a smooth and evenly planed or sanded finish. The face

43、-side or (in the case of a board of which either of two faces may be used as the face-side) the worse face shall have no pronounced cutter marks. Ends shall be end-matched (see 4.6) or fine square-sawn, as specified by the purchaser. 4.5 Squareness of ends When the out-of-squareness of a board havin

44、g plain sawn ends is measured in accordance with 7.3(f), the gap between the blade of the square and the end of the board shall not exceed 1 mm. End-matched boards shall be so squared that, when two boards are assembled with their edges properly aligned, there is no opening exceeding 0,5 mm between

45、the ends on the face-side. 4.6 End-matching Unless otherwise specified, all boards shall be end-matched. End-matching may be of the right-hand type (see 2.1). End-matched boards shall have a tongue on one end that corresponds to the tongue on one edge, and a groove on the other end that corresponds

46、to the groove on the other edge. Amdt 1 4.7 Moisture content 4.7.1 Boards of hardwood Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, the moisture content of hardwood boards shall be as follows: a) in the case of boards intended for use in drier regions (see figure 1) within the range 7 to 11 % (m/m);

47、and SANS 1039:2008 Edition 1.3 9 b) in the case of boards intended for use in regions of higher moisture (see figure 1) within the range 12 to 15 % (m/m). 4.7.2 Boards of softwood The moisture content of softwood boards shall be as follows: a) In the case of boards of face width exceeding 75 mm, wit

48、hin the range 7 to 12 % (m/m); and b) in the case of boards of face width not exceeding 75 mm, within the range 7 to 15 % (m/m). NOTE It is recommended that the moisture content of softwood boards intended for use in very dry regions (see figure 1) shall be as specified by the purchaser. 4.8 Finger-

49、joints Finger-joints in boards shall be allowed provided that this has been agreed upon between supplier and purchaser and subject to the following provisions and exceptions: a) the profile shall comply with the requirements of SANS 10096 and the following: Amdt 1 1) the weakening ratio shall not exceed 0,25; 2) the clearance shall not exceed 0,5 mm; and 3) the requirements for knots in profile and joint area shall not apply; b) there shall be no broken or misaligned fingers on the face-side; and Amdt 1 c) the finger-joints shall have been glued and
