9、liers and nippers 1 Scope This specification covers requirements for the material, dimensions, construction and performance of 12 types of pliers and 3 types of nippers. NOTE a) The standards referred to in the specification are listed in appendix A. b) Requirements that must be specified by the pur

10、chaser and a requirement that must be agreed upon between the supplier and the purchaser are listed in appendix B. c) All figures are merely illustrative and are not intended to preclude pliers and nippers that, while complying with the relevant requirements of the specification, differ in appearanc

11、e from those illustrated. d) Plastics-coated handles on tools are only for gripping comfort and are not intended to give any degree of protection against electric shock. All normal safeguards should therefore always be observed when such tools are used to do work on electrical apparatus. e) Informat

12、ion regarding verification of the quality of pliers and nippers is given in appendix C. 2 Definitions 2.1 General For the purposes of this specification the following definitions shall apply: size the nominal overall length of a tool tool a pair of pliers or a pair of nippers 2.2 Nomenclature For th

13、e purposes of this specification the terms used for pliers and nippers (where applicable) are given in figure 1. SANS 1120:2008 Edition 2.1 4 3 General requirements 3.1 Type A tool shall be of one of the following types as required: Type 1: Round-nose pliers (see figure 2) Type 2: Flat short-nose pl

14、iers (see figure 3) Type 3: Flat long-nose pliers (see figure 4) Type 4: Snipe-nose pliers (see figure 5) Type 5: Snipe-nose pliers with side cutter (see figure 6) Type 6: Duck-bill pliers (see figure 7) Type 7: Fencing pliers (see figure 8) Type 8: Linemans pliers (see figure 9) Type 9: Combination

15、 pliers (see figure 10) Type 10: Electricians pliers (see figure 11) Type 11: Gas pliers (see figure 12) Type 12: Parallel-action flat-nose pliers with cutter (see figure 13) Type 13: Diagonal-cutting nippers (see figure 14) Type 14: Short-nose diagonal-cutting nippers (see figure 15) Type 15: End-c

16、utting nippers (see figure 16) 3.2 Material A tool (other than the handles of a type 12 plier) shall be forged from an alloy steel or a carbon steel. 3.3 Size and dimensions The size of a tool shall be one of those given in column 1 of the table to the relevant of figures 1-2 and as required. The ac

17、tual length of tools that have uncoated handles shall not differ from the nominal length by more than the appropriate of the following values: a) Tools of nominal length 125 mm: 6,0 mm b) Tools of nominal length 140 mm: 7,0 mm c) Tools of nominal length 160 mm: 8,0 mm d) Tools of nominal length 180

18、mm: 9,0 mm e) Tools of nominal length 200 mm: 10,0 mm SANS 1120:2008 Edition 2.1 5 f) Tools of nominal length 250 mm: 12,5 mm g) Tools of nominal length 300 mm: 15,0 mm The other dimensions shall conform to the values given in the relevant of figures 2-16. 3.4 Handles Handles shall be shaped to affo

19、rd a comfortable grip and to prevent accidental pinching of the hand. They shall be of the bowed or flared type, as required, and shall be free from burrs and sharp edges. The ends of handles shall be suitably rounded. 3.5 Joints Joints shall be of the lay-on, single, box or parallel action type, as

20、 required (see figures 2-16), and shall function smoothly and without play in any position of the jaws. Single joints shall be machined all over. 3.6 Jaws Serrations of the pipe grip, when relevant, and the gripping surfaces of jaws shall have sharp projections and shall be of the transverse or cros

21、swise type. 3.7 Insulation Insulation used on the handles of tools, when required, shall be PVC or a material of at least equal dielectric properties. The insulation should preferably be shouldered at the head end. When a tool is tested in accordance with 6.2, there shall be no breakdown of the insu

22、lation. The test voltage shall not be indicated on the insulation. CAUTION: The fact that handles of tools are insulated is no guarantee of immunity from electric shock. Although these tools may initially have withstood high voltages under test, subsequent damage due to dropping or the presence of p

23、erspiration may result in breakdown of the insulation. Complete reliance should therefore not be placed on tools having insulated handles. 3.8 Strength of handles When the handles of a tool are tested in accordance with 6.3, the permanent set shall not exceed the relevant value given in column 4 of

24、table 1. 3.9 Cutting ability When a tool of type 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14 or 15 is tested in accordance with 6.4, it shall cut the appropriate test wire cleanly under an applied force that does not exceed the value given in column 6 of table 1, appropriate to the type and size of the tool. After t

25、he test, the cutting edges of the tool shall show no sign of damage or visible indentation that would affect the cutting ability of the tool, and tools other than type 7 pliers shall be capable of cleanly cutting a soft copper wire. 3.10 Resistance to torsion When pliers of type 1 and type 2 are tes

26、ted in accordance with 6.5, there shall be no distortion of the jaws or loosening of the rivet. The angle of twist shall not exceed the relevant value given in column 8 of table 1. SANS 1120:2008 Edition 2.1 6 3.11 Finish A tool shall have one or a combination of the following finishes, as required:

27、 a) phosphate coating; b) chemically blackened; c) electrodeposited metallic coating in accordance with service condition No. 1 of SANS 135; Amdt 1 d) polished head; and e) plastics-coated handles. (See also 3.7.) 3.12 Protective treatment Unless a tool has a finish that is inherently corrosion resi

28、stant, the tool shall be treated to ensure that it reaches the user in its original condition. 33、 requirements 4.1 Pliers 4.1.1 Round-nose pliers (see figure 2) Round-nose pliers shall have jaws that are circular in section and that taper uniformly in thickness from close to the joint to the point. When the pliers are closed, the jaws shall be in contact with each other at the point only, and w

34、hen the jaws are parallel to each other, the clearance between them shall be at least 0,50 mm. 4.1.2 Flat short-nose pliers (see figure 3) Flat short-nose pliers shall have jaws that are uniform in width and that taper uniformly in thickness from close to the joint to the point. At least 30 % of the

35、 gripping surfaces closest to the point shall be serrated. 4.1.3 Flat long-nose pliers (see figure 4) Flat long-nose pliers shall have jaws that are uniform in width and that taper uniformly in thickness from close to the joint to the point. At least 30 % of the gripping surfaces closest to the poin

36、t shall be serrated. 4.1.4 Snipe-nose pliers (see figure 5) Snipe nose pliers shall have jaws that are semi-circular in section and that taper uniformly in thickness from close to the joint to the point. At least 30 % of the gripping surfaces closest to the point shall be serrated. When the pliers a

37、re closed, the jaws shall be in contact with each other at the point only. SANS 1120:2008 Edition 2.1 8 4.1.5 Snipe-nose pliers with side cutter (see figure 6) Snipe-nose pliers with side cutter shall have jaws that are semi-circular in section and that taper uniformly in thickness from close to the

38、 joint to the point. At least 30 % of the gripping surfaces closest to the point shall be serrated. A side cutter shall be provided adjacent to the joint. When the pliers are closed, the cutting edges shall be in contact with each other along their full length and the points of the jaws shall either

39、 touch or have a clearance not exceeding 0,40 mm. There shall be a recess behind the side cutter to provide acceptable clearance for the material being cut. 4.1.6 Duck-bill pliers (see figure 7) Duck-bill pliers shall have jaws that taper uniformly in thickness from close to the joint to the point.

40、The gripping surfaces at the point shall have no serrations. When the pliers are closed, the jaws shall be in contact with each other at the point only. 4.1.7 Fencing pliers (see figure 8) Fencing pliers shall have at least two wire cutters of the joint type. The jaws shall have trans-verse or cross

41、wise serrations at the ends furthest from the joint and heavily serrated gripping surfaces over the remaining areas. The inside of the handles adjacent to the joint shall have serrations for gripping wire when a straining operation is carried out. A “V“ groove in one of the jaws may be provided at t

42、he option of the manufacturer. 4.1.8 Linemans pliers (see figure 9) Linemens pliers shall have a side cutter adjacent to the joint and a recess behind the cutter to provide acceptable clearance for the material being cut. The jaws shall have transverse serrations. When the pliers are closed, the cut

43、ting edges shall be in contact with each other along their full lenght and the points of the jaws shal either touch or have a clearance not exceeding 0,40 mm. 4.1.9 Combination pliers (see figure 10) Combination pliers shall have a side cutter and may have a wire cutter of the joint type. The side c

44、utter shall be adjacent to the joint and there shall be a recess behind the cutter to provide acceptable clearance for the material being cut. The jaws shall have transverse serrations at the ends furthest from the joint and pipe-grip surfaces at the inner ends. When the pliers are closed, the cutti

45、ng edges shall be in contact with each other along their full length and the points of the jaws shall either touch or have a clearance not exceeding 0,40 mm. 4.1.10 Electricians pliers (see figure 11) Electricians pliers shall have a side cutter and may have a wire cutter of the joint type. The side

46、 cutter shall be adjacent to the joint and there shall be a recess behind the cutter to provide acceptable clearance for the material being cut. The remaining portions of the jaws shall have transverse serrations at the ends furthest from the joint and pipe-grip surfaces at the inner ends. When the

47、pliers are closed, the cutting edges shall be in contact with each other along their full length and the jaws shall either touch or have a clearance not exceeding 0,40 mm. The pliers shall have insulated handles that comply with the requirements of 3.7. 4.1.11 Gas pliers (see figure 12) Gas pliers s

48、hall have jaws that are uniform in thickness. The jaws shall have two different sizes of pipe grips of elliptical shape that are heavily transversely serrated. The following features may be included at the option of the manufacturer: a) a wire cutter of the joint type; b) a screwdriver end to one of

49、 the handles; SANS 1120:2008 Edition 2.1 9 c) a “V“ groove in one jaw to facilitate twisting wire; d) a “reamer“ end to the other handle for deburring the inside of a pipe that has been cut with a hacksaw. 4.1.2 Parallel-action flat-nose pliers with cutter (see figure 13) Parallel-action flat-nose pliers shall be lever assisted, and shall have serrated jaws and a side cutter. When the pliers are closed, the cutting edges shall be in contact with each other along their full length and the jaws shall either touch or have a clearance not exceeding 0,40 mm. 4.2 Nippers 4.2.
