14、entionally left blank SANS 1176:2010 Edition 3.1 3 Self-supporting plastics containers of nominal capacities 5 L to 220 L 1 Scope 1.1 This standard specifies the characteristics of self-supporting containers that are made of plastics materials, are of nominal capacities 5 L to 220 L, and are suitabl

15、e for the storage and transportation of substances in liquid or solid form. 1.2 This standard also covers self-supporting plastics containers, of maximum nominal capacity 10 L, for reserve fuel for motor vehicles. 1.3 When dangerous substances intended for export are packed in self-supporting plasti

16、cs containers, cognizance shall be taken of the applicable regulations of the following organizations: a) International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) technical instructions for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air; b) International Maritime Organization (IMO) international maritime dang

17、erous goods code (IMDG code); and c) regulations issued by other organizations with regard to the conveyance of dangerous goods and applicable in the importing country/countries, for example international convention concerning the carriage of dangerous goods by rail (RID), European agreement concern

18、ing the international carriage of dangerous goods by road (ADR) and Department of Transport, USA (DOT). 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. Amdt 1 SANS 1176:2010 Edition 3.1 4 3 Definitions For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply: 3.1 ac

22、ceptable acceptable to the authority administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevant Amdt 1 3.2 container self-supporting container that is made of plastics material(s) and of which a) the body is predominantly cylindrical or rectangular in shape, and the

23、 body, top and bottom are moulded in one piece or combined to form one piece (tight-head style), or b) the body is predominantly cylindrical or rectangular in shape, the body and bottom are moulded in one piece, and the top is of circular configuration and of the removable type (open-head style) 3.3

24、 dangerous substances and goods substances and goods that are classified as such and allocated to packaging groups I, II or III in SANS 10228 3.4 defective container that fails in one or more respects to comply with the appropriate requirements of the standard 3.5 effective plastics material plastic

25、s material that is capable of performing the required functions and that a) is based on a polymer of a grade and quality recommended by the polymer manufacturer as being suitable for the specific purpose(s), b) contains no reground material other than material derived from clean and reworked materia

26、l from the manufacturers own production, and c) has not deteriorated during compounding and processing 3.6 flammable liquids class 3 substances identified in SANS 10228 and SANS 10229-1 Amdt 1 3.7 general goods non-dangerous substances not listed in SANS 10228 and low risk substances that may be lis

27、ted in SANS 10229-1, but are not assigned to packaging groups I, II or III. For the purposes of this standard, general goods are assigned to packaging group IV Amdt 1 3.8 liquid commodity the kinematic viscosity of which, determined in accordance with ASTM D445, does not exceed 1 650 mm2/s at 40 C S

29、roup packagings are designed to offer protection and security of containment at different performance levels and are allocated to four groups as follows: packaging group I high strength packaging that offers a high degree of protection, prescribed for very dangerous goods packaging group II medium s

30、trength packaging that offers adequate protection for dangerous goods presenting a medium degree of danger packaging group III lowest grade of packaging prescribed for dangerous goods that still offers adequate protection for goods presenting a minor degree of danger packaging group IV (see also 3.7

31、) packaging prescribed for non-dangerous substances, designed to meet economic considerations, e.g. to prevent product loss, spoilage and contamination 3.11 self-supporting descriptive of a container that is strong enough not to require additional outer support 4 Requirements for materials 4.1 Conta

32、iners Containers shall be of an effective plastics material. The colour of the material of a finished container shall be an acceptable match to the colour required. Additives such as fillers, plasticizers, anti-static agents, pigments and inhibitors that are used in the plastics formulation shall be

33、 compatible with the polymer and shall not deleteriously affect the commodity for which the container is intended. The plastics material of a finished container shall be compatible with the commodity contained and such compatibility shall be established by an organization acceptable to the regulator

34、y authorities. In the case of containers intended for dangerous goods, the relevant requirements of SANS 10229-1 shall apply and in cases where substances for human consumption are packed, cognizance shall be taken of the relevant national legislation (see foreword). Amdt 1 NOTE Test procedures to d

35、etermine the compatibility of plastics containers and commodities, and that may be acceptable to the regulatory authorities, are given in annex C. 4.2 Requirements for closures Plastics closures of a material different from that of the container shall comply with the requirements of 4.1. SANS 1176:2

36、010 Edition 3.1 6 5 Construction 5.1 Style A container shall be of one of the styles given in 5.1.1 and 5.1.2, as required. 5.1.1 Tight-head (fixed-end, non-removable head) style The body, top and bottom and the flange(s) for the closure(s) shall be integral, i.e. moulded in one piece or combined to

37、 form one piece. There shall be either one or two closures of internal diameter not exceeding 70 mm at the top end of the container. The number, types and internal diameters of the closures shall be as required. The closures shall be so designed that they will seal efficiently, and threaded closures

38、 shall be resistant to “cork creep“. NOTE Tight-head containers may also be of the non-invertible style (see 3.9). 5.1.2 Open-head (removable head) style The body and bottom shall be integral, i.e. moulded in one piece. The lid (top) and the flange(s) (if any) shall be moulded in one piece. The numb

39、er (but not more than two), types and internal diameters of additional closures shall be as required. The lid and the rim of the container shall be such as to provide a good matching fit and, when so required, the joint shall be provided with a gasket. The lid shall be secured in position by means o

40、f a suitable clamping or strapping device that ensures a tight fit. 5.2 Handles Handles, if required, shall be of the type and number required, shall be of adequate size, and of strength such as to enable the container to comply with the requirements of 6.10. 5.3 Shape and dimensions The shape and d

41、imensions of a container shall be as required and shall make provision for the appropriate ullage (see 5.4). 5.4 Capacity The nominal capacity of a container shall be as required, and shall preferably be one of the following: 5 L, 10 L, 20 L, 25 L, 50 L, 100 L or 220 L. The actual capacity (i.e. the

42、 brimful capacity less the quantity displaced by the closure) shall be such that a) in the case of containers for liquid commodities, the liquid in the container would not fill the container when heated to 55 C, and b) in the case of containers for solid commodities, it exceeds the nominal capacity

43、by at least 1,5%. 5.5 Mass The mass of a finished container shall not differ by more than 3% from the nominal mass agreed upon. SANS 1176:2010 Edition 3.1 7 5.6 Finish and workmanship The finish and workmanship shall be such as to be acceptable. Both the inside and the outside of a container shall b

44、e acceptably free from pits and flashing, and pigmentation shall be evenly distributed. The finish of the sealing surfaces of a closure (of any type) shall be such that the closure complies with the requirements of 6.7. 6 Performance requirements 6.1 Containers for dangerous goods Plastics container

45、s intended for dangerous goods shall comply with the relevant performance requirements of SANS 10229-1. Amdt 1 NOTE Open-head containers are not permitted for liquid commodities of packaging group I. 6.2 Resistance to impact at 18 C C (tight-head containers for solid and liquid commodities of packag

46、ing groups I, II and III, open-head containers for solid commodities of packaging groups I, II and III and for liquid commodities of packaging groups II and III, and tight-head containers for commodities of packaging group IV) 02+When a container is tested in accordance with 8.1 by being dropped thr

47、ough the appropriate height given in column 2, 3 or 4 (as relevant) of table 1, it shall show no sign of failure liable to affect safety during transport. 6.3 Resistance to impact at 18 C C (open-head containers for commodities of packaging group IV) 02+When a container is tested in accordance with

48、8.2 by being dropped through the appropriate height given in column 2, 3 or 4 of table 1, it shall show no sign of failure.
