11、ity performance categories. NOTE The use of certain fabric combinations, trims, accessories and sewing threads that are not compatible can have an adverse effect on the flammability performance of a garment. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the applicat

17、d or a pile fabric without ignition of its basic structure 4 Flammability requirements 4.1 Fabric class and flammability performance category 4.1.1 Fabric class The fabric shall be of one of the following classes, as required (see annex A): Class A: Capable of withstanding the required industrial or

18、 hospital laundry process, which shall preferably be one of the processes given in SANS 10146. Class B: Capable of withstanding wash treatments at temperatures of up to 95 C. Class C: Capable of withstanding wash treatments at temperatures of up to 60 C. Class D: Capable of withstanding wash treatme

19、nts at temperatures of up to 40 C. 4.1.2 Flammability performance category The fabric shall be of one of the following categories, as required (see annex A). Category 1: The fabric does not ignite within a given time period. Category 2: The fabric ignites within a given time period but the flame spr

20、ead ceases within a specified distance. Category 3: The fabric ignites within a given time period and might continue to flame but at a rate of flame propagation that is within a specified limit. 4.2 Flammability performance The fabric of any class shall, both before and after the appropriate wash tr

21、eatment, comply with the relevant requirements given in table 1. If the dimensions of a garment are insuffi

23、cient to provide the required size of specimen, staple together shorter pieces of the fabric (without overlapping), using not more than four equally spaced metal staples over the full width of the test specimen. 5.2 Conditioning Condition the test samples in accordance with SANS 70 before cutting fr

24、om each test sample the test specimens required for the tests given in 5.5 to 5.7 (inclusive). 5.3 Wash treatment When relevant, the appropriate number of test specimens shall be subjected to the following wash treatment applicable to the fabric class: Class A: Twelve wash cycles in accordance with

25、the laundry process to which the fabric or garment will be subjected in use. Class B: Five wash cycles in accordance with SANS 960: Procedure A but, in place of the sodium carbonate and soap flakes, using the IEC test detergent Type 11) (without perborate). Class C: Five wash cycles in accordance wi

26、th SANS 960: Procedure B but, in place of the wetting agent, using the IEC test detergent Type 11)(without perborate) in the same quantity as for Class B. Class D: Five wash cycles in accordance with SANS 960: Procedure C but, in place of the wetting agent, using the IEC test detergent Type 11)(with

27、out perborate) in the same quantity as for Class B. 5.4 Sequence of testing NOTE A flow chart illustrating the sequence of testing and the requirements to be determined for each category is given in annex B. To economize on the quantity of fabric required and the time and costs involved in testing,

28、tests shall be performed in the following sequence: 1) Details regarding suppliers of the IEC test detergent are obtainable from the Construction Standards Department of StanSA (a division of the SABS). SANS 1423-1:2008 Edition 1.1 6 a) Stage 1: In the case of a raised or a pile fabric, determine wh

29、ether surface flash occurs (see 5.5) on test specimens before washing. If surface flash does not occur, repeat the test on specimens washed in accordance with the treatment appropriate to the fabric class. If flash still does not occur, proceed to stage 2. If surface flash occurs on specimens either

30、 before or after washing, no further tests are required. b) Stage 2: Determine the ignition time (see 5.6) on test specimens before washing. If the ignition time exceeds 20 s, repeat the test on specimens washed in accordance with the treatment appropriate to the fabric class. If ignition time is eq

31、ual to or less than 20 s on specimens either before or after washing, proceed to stage 3. If the ignition time still exceeds 20 s, no further tests are required. c) Stage 3: Perform the test for extent of flame spread (see 5.7) on test specimens before washing. If the flame spread does not extend be

32、yond the first marker thread, repeat the test on specimens washed in accordance with the treatment appropriate to the fabric class. If the flame spread extends beyond the first marker thread on specimens either before or after washing, proceed to stage 4. If it still does not extend beyond the first

33、 marker thread, no further tests are required. d) Stage 4: Determine the rate of flame propagation (see 5.7) on test specimens before washing. If it is less than 5 mm/s, repeat the test on specimens washed in accordance with the treatment appropriate to the fabric class. 5.5 Surface flash Use SANS 6

34、105. 5.6 Ignition time Use the method given in SANS 6940 for surface ignition. 5.7 Extent of flame spread and rate of flame propagation Use the method given in SANS 6941 for surface ignition, but at a flame application time (up to a maximum of 20 s) as determined in accordance with 5.6. If the flame

35、 spread extends beyond the marker thread(s), determine each rate of flame propagation from the recorded flame spread time(s), as follows: Rate of flame propagation, mm/s: 11220tR = 122150ttR = 233150ttR = where R1 is the rate of flame propagation to the first marker thread, in millimetres per second

37、 the igniting flame to the severance of the first, second and third marker threads respectively, in seconds. 6 Labelling and marking The following information shall appear in legible and indelible marking on a label securely attached to the fabric: a) the fabric class and flammability performance ca

38、tegory; b) in the case of a class A fabric, the applicable laundry process. 39、ory (see 4.1); b) in the case of a class A fabric, the laundry process to which the fabric or garment will be subjected in use (see 4.1.1). Annex B (informative) Test and evaluation flow chart The flow chart in figure B.1 illustrates the sequence in which tests shall be performed on specimens, both before and after the appropriate wash treatment, and the evaluations necessary to determine into which category a fabric falls or whether a fabric complies with the relevant requirements for a particular category.
