11、1:2009 Edition 1 3 Conveyor belting Step splicing for multi-ply textile-reinforced rubber covered conveyor belting Part 1: Hot-splicing method 1 Scope This part of SANS 484 specifies the requirements for the conventional splicing of textile-reinforced multi-ply rubber covered conveyor belting using

12、the hot-splicing method. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. I

SANS 1173, General purpose textile-reinforced conveyor belting. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this document the following definitions apply. 3.1 acceptable acceptable to the autho

14、rity administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevant 3.2 bias oblique angle to the centre line of the belt, which matches the bias of the vulcanising press platen (see annex B) 3.3 carcass combination of plies and inter-ply rubber SANS 484-1:2009 Edition

15、1 4 3.4 conventional splice where two ends of a belt are joined in such a way that the corresponding plies from each end butt together with a distance separating the abutment of adjacent plies that is equal to the step length 3.5 cover rubber compound that has specific properties and thickness relat

20、ime time at which the vulcanising press is maintained at the specified vulcanising temperature and pressure to complete the vulcanising process (see 7(g) 4 Requirements 4.1 General In order for a splice to comply with this part of SANS 484, the following requirements and the requirements in 4.2 to 4

21、.7 (inclusive) shall be complied with: a) There shall be one single cure across the full width of the belt. b) The splice shall be cleaned, including removal of release agent and trimming of flash rubber. c) Any evidence of moisture ingress or carcass damage shall be recorded and brought to the imme

22、diate attention of the responsible owner or official before any further splice construction. d) Minimum thickness of the skim layer shall be 0,8 mm. e) The hardness of the splice bridge rubber shall comply with the compound manufacturers nominal Shore A hardness specification, 5 units. f) Edge bars

23、shall be made of aluminium, steel or copper and shall be of a thickness of between 1,0 mm and 1,5 mm less than the parent belt thickness as measured at the edge of the belt. g) Urethane or cellulose sponges, clean and dry brushes and new clean cotton cloths shall be used during cleaning and preparat

24、ion of splice surfaces. h) All plies shall be cut on a flat surface and shall be cut using a ply knife (see annex C). 4.2 Splicing layout The splice shall be constructed according to a splice layout diagram given in figure 1. 27、re: a) 2-ply jump splice: allowance = (2 step length) + 50 + Wtan; b) Multi-ply splice: allowance = (N-1) step length) + 50 + Wtan where is the press bias angle; W is the belt width; N is the number of belt plies. 4.4 Workmanship The splice, including edges, shall be substantially rectangular in cro

28、ss-section and free from defects that would impair its long-term serviceability. Differences in belt thickness and worn belts shall be dealt with in a manner to ensure uniform pressure across the splice during vulcanisation. SANS 484-1:2009 Edition 1 8 4.5 Splicing materials 4.5.1 All materials shal

29、l be used within the shelf life as specified by the raw materials manufacturer. 4.5.2 Storage conditions of all materials shall be as defined by the raw materials manufacturer. 4.5.3 Top and bottom splice bridge rubber shall be compatible with the parent belt rubber and shall have the same or better

30、 properties. 4.5.4 Splicing materials shall be compatible with the parent belt in all aspects. 4.5.5 An adhesion test shall be performed to determine compatibility of splicing materials with the parent belt. 4.5.6 The splicing construction company shall ensure that raw materials used in the construc

31、tion of the splice are capable of producing a splice that will not fail. Properties of raw materials shall be within the material manufacturers specification, and shall show no degree of curing, and shall be free of contamination. Proof of compatibility of all raw materials to the parent belt shall

32、be verified. Proof of product compatibility shall be made available to the owner as part of the quality control documentation before commencing the splice construction. 4.5.7 An acceptable release agent is one of the following: a) release cloth; b) silicon paper; c) teflon sheeting; or d) teflon coa

33、ted glass cloth. The release agent used shall be such that the finished splice has a similar surface finish when compared with the parent belt. 4.6 Press apparatus 4.6.1 Vulcanising press, that is capable of achieving the required temperature range and ramp time as specified by the supplier of the r

34、aw materials. 4.6.2 Platen, of minimum combined platen length that shall exceed the splice length by 100 mm on the leading and trailing ends. The width of the platen shall accommodate the width of the belt plus a minimum of 50 mm per edge bar. Specific platen pressure on the surface of the belt shal

35、l be uniform and automatically controlled to 700 kPa 70 kPa. 4.6.3 Automatic pre-set temperature controller, accurate to 1 C. 4.6.4 Thermocouples, with a minimum of one per platen. 4.6.5 Press calibration certificates (see 10.2(d). SANS 484-1:2009 Edition 1 9 4.7 Environmental conditions The work ar

36、ea shall comply with the following conditions: a) Dry. b) Dust and pollutant free. c) Luminance shall be a minimum of 400 lux. d) Be well ventilated for chemical use so as to prevent exposure to toxic fumes by personnel working in the area. Personnel should also position themselves such that they ar

37、e not exposed to toxic fumes and take precautions to prevent contact with toxic materials. e) Ambient temperature above the dew point. f) Humidity of no more than 70 % as measured on a hygrometer (see annex C). g) Compliant with conditions as laid out in clause 6. NOTE Ideally a permanent belt splic

38、ing station should be available. 5 Method of constructing a conventional splice of textile-reinforced multi-ply rubber covered conveyor belting 5.1 General The properties of the parent belt shall be pre-determined and that information shall be supplied by the owner to the splice constructor in order

39、 to ensure compatibility of the raw materials with the parent belt. 5.2 Layout The splice shall be constructed in accordance with the requirements of figure 1 and table 1. 5.3 Practices not permitted The following practices are not permitted: a) multi section curing; b) repairs on the vulcanised spl

40、ice; c) the use of cotton waste and paper towels for the application of solvents and solutions; d) incorrect storage of splice materials; and e) the use of conveyor belting in place of edge bars. 5.4 Situations where splicing is not permitted Splicing is not permitted in the following situations: a)

41、 if ambient temperature is less than 5 C above the dew point; b) if the difference in the number of plies between the two belts being spliced is two or greater; and c) if the materials used in the construction of the splice do not conform to the properties of the parent belt. 42、 1 10 6 Safety, health and environmental issues 6.1 Safety Safety requirements shall be in accordance with the owners requirements, and the following: a) A site specific risk assessment shall be conducted in conjunction with the owner. The risk assessment shall address stored energy, belt clamping a

43、nd the wearing of correct personal protective equipment by all operators, as well as any other conditions specific to the site. b) Material safety data sheets shall accompany all chemicals taken onto site. Approval for all substances taken onto site shall be obtained from the owner and safety precau

44、tions as stipulated by the owner shall be adhered to. c) All equipment used in constructing a splice shall be certified as fit for use according to the standards as set by the manufacturer of the equipment and by the owner. Service books or certificates of compliance (or both) for all equipment shal

45、l be available for inspection. 6.2 Health 6.2.1 All personnel involved in the construction of any particular splice shall be fully conversant with all health hazards associated with raw materials used in the construction of a splice. 6.2.2 A copy of material safety data sheets for all raw materials

46、used shall be available for inspection. 6.3 Environment Waste materials shall be disposed of in accordance with material safety data sheets. 7 Rejection criteria The rejection criteria of a completed splice are as follows: a) any blisters or bulges on the belt or splice bridges (or both) adjacent to

47、 the splice or in the splice area; b) belt run out, within 15 m of the splice, of more than 5 % of the belt width or a maximum of 75 mm; c) the vulcanised Shore A hardness of the splice bridge cover rubber is not within the compound manufacturers specification parameters; d) any evidence of porosity

48、 on the splice edges or splice bridges; e) a splice constructor who has not followed the requirements of this part of SANS 484; f) the use of splicing materials which do not comply with the provisions of clause 4.5 of this part of SANS 484; g) loss of pressure by more than 15 % during the vulcanisat

49、ion time; h) the critical compound vulcanisation temperature, as specified by the belt and raw materials manufacturer, is not reached or maintained for the specified time period; and i) any other non-conformance items as detailed by the owners technical representative on site. SANS 484-1:2009 Edition 1 11 8 Methods of test 8.1 Conditions of test 8.1.1 Verify temperature and pressure measuring equipment for correct operation and accuracy before construction of every splice and calibrate formally on at least a quarterly basis. 8.1.2 Calibrate
