SANS 5323:2008 Edition 3.1 1 Breaking strength of seams in textiles 1 Scope This standard specifies a method for the determination of the breaking strength of seams in textiles. 2

7、 Normative reference The following standard contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitutes provisions of this standard. Amdt 1 3 Principle The breaking strength of a prescribed number of specimens with a seam is determined in accordance with a prescrib

10、ed method. The highest force during the breaking (individual results and mean value) and details about where the break occurred on each specimen are reported. 4 Apparatus a) Testing machine. As described in section 6 of SANS 13934-2:2008. Amdt 1 b) Template. A rigid template having the shape and dim

11、ensions shown in figure 1. SANS 5323:2008 Edition 3.1 2 Figure 1 Template for the preparation of test specimens 5 Preparation of test specimens From the conditioned sample prepare six test specimens by so placing the template on the seam under test that the notches in the template coincide with the

12、appropriate of the following: a) when there is a single row of stitches: the row of stitches; b) when there are two or more rows of stitches: the midpoint between the two outer rows of stitches; or c) when the seam has been bonded only: the midpoint in the width of the seam. Mark the outline of the

13、test specimen on the fabric of the test sample by drawing around the outside (but ignoring the notches) of the template. Draw the jaw-positioning marks (see figure 1 and figure 2) and then cut out the test specimen. Figure 2 Positioning of the test specimen in the jaws SANS 5323:2008 Edition 3.1 3 6

14、 Procedure 6.1 Set the testing machine so that the free distance between the jaws is 75 mm at the start of the test. Clamp the conditioned test specimen symmetrically in the jaws, with the longer dimension parallel to and the shorter dimension (and seam) at right angles to the direction of applicati

15、on of the force. Clamp the test specimen in such a way that the jaw-positioning marks on the fabric are aligned with the jaws of the machine (see figure 2). 6.2 Operate the machine, record the highest force registered during the breaking of the test specimen, and note whether failure occurred in a)

16、the body of the fabric, b) the fabric at the seam, c) the sewing thread, or d) two or all of the above. NOTE When a test specimen slips in the jaws, breaks at a jaw, or, for any other reason attributable to faulty operation, shows a result markedly below the average for the set of specimens, discard

17、 the result and, where possible, carry out a duplicate test on another specimen. Include the value so obtained in the average of the set of test specimens. If a duplicate test cannot be made, use the results of the valid tests, provided that these number not less than five. 7 Calculation Calculate the arithmetic mean of the forces recorded, and record the individual results, the mean value, and the part(s) in which failure occurred (see 6.2).
