、 bond quality of plywood and composite boards (knife test) 1 Scope This method covers the knife test for determining bond quality between the plies of plywood, and veneered composite board products. NOTE 1 In this method reference is made to the latest issues of SANS 10183 (SABS 0183) Terminology an

、d classification of adhesives for wood, and SANS 6016 and SANS 6032 (SABS SM 1016 and SABS SM 1032). NOTE 2 This method is an alternative to the internal bond test as given In SANS 6016. The assessment of the quality of bonding is based on the traditional belief that a well-made joint should break u

、nder test in the wood rather than in the glue line. The highest bond quality is reflected when the separation occurs only in the wood, and the glue line is covered entirely by adhering fibre. When total delamination occurs, there is no bonding between the veneers. Between these extremes is an Infini

Dry interior 1 4.3 Immerse the test specimens from treatments 3 and 4 (see column 2 of table 1) in tap water for ease of handling before testing. 4.4 Test all specimens as soon as possible after conditioning, and keep submerged in tap water unti

、l testing Is undertaken, 5 Procedure 5.1 Aggregates Place the test specimen flat on the workbench and secure the specimen while the test is being carried out. Apply the knife (see figure 2) cutting edge parallel to the grain of the face veneer under test. Push the knife edge down into the face venee

、r until the tip reaches the glue line. Then push It horizontally along the glue line for a distance of approximately 25 mm to 50 mm, and finally prize off the veneer by pressing downward on the knife handle. Working across the test specimen and commencing each time on an undamaged area of the surfac

、e, repeat this operation until the veneer has been fully removed. NOTE In order to achieve systematic and speedy removal of the tested veneer over the entire sample area, the following procedure is recommended (see Figure. 2): a) Start the first cut near the left edge of the test specimen about 20 m

、m from the edge facing you. b) If some veneer still remains to the left of the first cut, perform the next cuts on that side until the veneer has been fully removed to the left edge. c) Perform the following cuts to the right of the first cut in 25 mm to 50 mm strips, until all the veneer has been r

、emoved over the entire sample width from left to right (or vice versa, if that is preferred). d) Repeat the procedure, always starting at the undamaged edge of the remaining veneer. In this way, the veneer is removed strip by strip until the sample edge resting against the backstop is reached. e) Tu

、rn the test specimen through 180, so that the untested edge is now against the backstop. Remove the remaining veneer. f) It happens frequently that it is very difficult to achieve the veneer separation at the tested glue line, and that the next veneer layer readily peels off. In such a case, another

、 starting point must be tried, or the sample must be rotated through 180, and the procedure then started from the other end. The use of shorter cuts with the blade may also improve veneer separation. This standard may only be used and printed by approved subscription and freemailing clients of the S

、ABS.SANS 5973:2009 Edition 1.1 5 g) It may also happen that the veneer removed in a cut may be substantially wider then the knife width. In extreme cases, the entire width of unbroken veneer is removed by a few successive cuts. These larger pieces must be retained and used In assessing the bond qual

、 quality. NOTE The master scale itself has steps of 2, but interpolations to the nearest whole number can be made. Take as the bond quality of the glue line the average of the results from each of the four test specimens, rounded off to the nearest whole number. In the case where a large piece of ve

、rning the test sample over, cutting, and recording the bond quality per glue line. NOTE It is important that the individual bond ratings are recorded in such a manner that the ratings of a particular glue line from all the tested specimens can be easily grouped and averaged (see table 2), 6 Calculat
