Introduction 1 The Gs interface connects the Gateway MSC/VLR and the SGSN in the EGPRS-136 2 network architecture (see TIA/EIA-136-370 1). This standard lists the layer-3 3 proc

、edures and messages applicable to the Gs interface in an EGPRS-136 network. It 4 also describes the association between a Gateway MSC/VLR and an SGSN. 5 4. Interface Procedures and Messages 6 Following is the list of Gs interface procedures (see ETSI TS 129 018 2) that are 7 applicable to the EGPRS-

、136 network. References to the VLR in ETSI TS 129 018 8 describing these Gs interface procedures apply to the Gateway MSC/VLR in this 9 standard. 10 VLR failure procedure 11 For the VLR failure procedure, if the VLR-Reliable MM context variable 12 is set to false, then the location update that an SG

、SN may perform at 13 reception of a periodic Routing Area Update after a VLR failure is not 14 applicable to an EGPRS-136 system. Other implementation specific 15 database recovery mechanisms may be used instead. 16 SGSN failure procedure 17 Error-Handling and Future-Compatibility procedure 18 Expli

、cit IMSI detach from GPRS services 19 Paging for non-GPRS services 20 In the Paging for non-GPRS services procedure, the Location area identifier 21 IE, the channel needed IE, and eMLPP Priority IE shall not be included by 22 the Gateway MSC/VLR. 23 The following is the list of Gs interface messages

、 (see ETSI TS 129 018) that are 24 applicable to the EGPRS-136 network: 25 BSSAP+-PAGING-REQUEST 26 BSSAP+-PAGING-REJECT 27 BSSAP+-RESET-INDICATION 28 BSSAP+-RESET-ACK 29 BSSAP+-MOBILE-STATUS 30 BSSAP+-MS-UNREACHABLE 31 BSSAP+-UPLINK-TUNNEL-REQUEST 32 BSSAP+-DOWNLINK-TUNNEL-REQUEST 33 BSSAP+-GPRS-DE

、TACH-INDICATION 34 BSSAP+-GPRS-DETACH-ACK 35 ANSI/TIA/EIA-136-377-E-2014 3 5. Description of the association between a 1 Gateway MSC/VLR and an SGSN 2 The following descriptions of the Gateway MSC/VLR-SGSN-association shall be used in 3 lieu of the description in ETSI TS 129 018. 4 5.1 Association a

、t the Gateway MSC/VLR 5 The states associated to the Gs interface in the Gateway MSC/VLR are specified in this 6 section. The state-description does not include message error handling (see ETSI TS 129 7 018). 8 5.1.1 States at the Gateway MSC/VLR 9 Gs-NULL 10 There is no SGSN-association for the MS

、and therefore the Gateway MSC/VLR 11 considers that the MS is detached of EGPRS-136 packet services. In this state, 12 no messages are sent to an SGSN. Any message other than BSSAP+-UPLINK-13 TUNNEL-REQUEST sent from an SGSN shall be ignored. If the Gateway 14 MSC/VLR receives a BSSAP+-UPLINK-TUNNEL

、-REQUEST message 15 containing anything other than a Registration, an Audit Order shall be sent to 16 force a registration by the MS. When receiving a Registration from the MS the 17 LA-UPDATE PRESENT state is entered. 18 LA-UPDATE PRESENT 19 In this state, the Gateway MSC/VLR waits for the outcome

、of the Registration 20 procedure from the HLR. The Gateway MSC/VLR shall send BSSAP+-21 PAGING-REQUEST messages to EGPRS-136 Class-B mobile stations via the 22 Gs interface only. On receiving a regnot message, if the registration attempt 23 succeeds, the state of the association is moved to Gs-ASSOC

、IATED. If it fails, 24 the state is moved to Gs-NULL. The state of the association is moved to Gs-25 NULL also by the receipt of a BSSAP+-PAGING-REJECT, BSSAP+-GPRS-26 DETACH-INDICATION, or BSSAP+-RESET-INDICATION from the SGSN, 27 a REGCANC from the HLR, or a Registration message from the MS with a

、 28 Powerdown or Deregistration indication. 29 Gs-ASSOCIATED 30 The Gateway MSC/VLR considers that the MS is attached to EGPRS-136 31 packet services and registered with TIA/EIA-136 circuit services. Upon entering 32 this state, the restoration indicator Confirmed by Radio Contact shall be set to 33

、 true. In this state, the Gateway MSC/VLR sends BSSAP+-PAGING-34 REQUEST messages to EGPRS-136 Class-B mobile stations via the Gs 35 interface only. The state of the association is moved to Gs-NULL by the receipt 36 of a BSSAP+-PAGING-REJECT, BSSAP+-GPRS-DETACH-INDICATION, 37 or BSSAP+-RESET-INDICAT

、ION from the SGSN, a REGCANC from the 38 HLR, or a Registration message from the MS with a Powerdown or 39 Deregistration indication. 40 41 ANSI/TIA/EIA-136-377-E-2014 4 5.2 Association at the SGSN 1 The states and MM context variables associated to the Gs interface in the SGSN are 2 specified in th

、is section. The state-description does not include message error handling 3 (see ETSI TS 129 018). 4 5.2.1 MM context variables at the SGSN 5 See ETSI TS 129 018. 6 5.2.2 States at the SGSN 7 Gs-NULL 8 There is no association to a Gateway MSC/VLR stored for the MS, and 9 therefore the SGSN shall con

、sider that the MS is detached for TIA/EIA-136 10 circuit services. In this state, the SGSN shall accept BSSAP+-PAGING-11 REQUEST messages to mobile stations only if the SGSN-Reset restoration 12 indicator in the SGSN is set to true (see ETSI TS 129 018). The state of the 13 association shall be move

、d to Gs-ASSOCIATED upon receiving a message 14 from the MS on one of the LLC layer tunneling SAPs containing signaling 15 messages (see TIA/EIA-136-370). 16 Gs-ASSOCIATED 17 The SGSN shall store an association for the MS. In this state, the SGSN shall 18 perform tunneling of signaling messages betwe

、en the Gateway MSC/VLR and 19 the MS. The state of the association is moved to Gs-NULL due to an explicit or 20 implicit Detach, receipt of a BSSAP+-RESET-INDICATION from the Gateway 21 MSC/VLR, or on receiving an SGSN Context Request (see ETSI TS 123 060 22 3) for the MS. 23 6. Tunneling of TIA/EIA

、-136 messages 24 6.1 General description 25 The procedures in section “Procedures for Tunnelling Non-GSM Signalling” of ETSI TS 26 129 018 shall apply. In addition, the procedure described here shall be used to tunnel 27 TIA/EIA-136 specific messages between the MS and the Gateway MSC/VLR. The 28 SG

、SN provides a transport service for the messages to be tunneled and shall not interpret 29 the tunneling payload. 30 6.2 Procedures in the Gateway MSC/VLR 31 When the Gateway MSC/VLR has a message to be tunneled to the MS, whose Gs state is 32 not Gs-NULL, it shall send a BSSAP+-DOWNLINK-TUNNEL-REQU

、EST message to 33 the SGSN associated with the MS. The priority level for the payload shall be set as 34 below: 35 ANSI/TIA/EIA-136-377-E-2014 5 Payload Type Tunnel Priority All TIA/EIA-136 messages except R-DATA, R-DATA ACCEPT, and R-DATA REJECT 00 All R-DATA, R-DATA ACCEPT, R-DATA REJECT messages

、10 All other values of Tunnel Priority are reserved 1 The action taken by the Gateway MSC/VLR on receiving a BSSAP+-UPLINK-2 TUNNEL-REQUEST message shall depend on the contents of the Message Capsule 3 received in the Tunnel Payload field. 4 6.3 Procedures in the SGSN 5 A message received by the SGSN from an MS or sent by the SGSN to the MS on one of 6 the Tunneling of Messages (TOM) LLC SAPs is called a TOM Protocol Envelope (see 7 TIA/EIA-136-376 4). The TOM Protocol Envelope is composed of the TOM Protocol 8 Header
