、s.1.3 BackgroundOptical fiber ribbon residual twist is a measure of how much a ribbon rotates, or twists, along a given length. Residual twist can result from the ribbon manufacturing process,or from changes in the dimensions of a ribbon due to heat and humidity aging.Excessive residual twist may hin

、der the splicing of the ribbon or the placement ofprotective sleeves over spliced sections.1.4 HazardsWarning: Take care when handling small-diameter fiber to prevent it from puncturingthe skin, especially in the eye area. Wear safety glasses when performing this test toprevent potential eye damage.

、455-13133 ApparatusThe following apparatus represents one approach to measuring ribbon residual twist.Equivalent designs may be used.3.1 Test FixtureThe test fixture shall be constructed so as to suspend the ribbon in a true verticalposition, while allowing it to rotate freely. Figure 1 presents one

、 design for such afixture. Methods shall be provided for measuring the ribbon gauge length and formeasuring the differential angle between the top and bottom of the gauge length. Theangle marks on the measurement face are used to indicate the degree of twist. TheZERO point on the angle protractor sh

、all be arranged to correspond with the ZEROposition of the top ribbon clamp. The resolution and accuracy of the angle markingsshall be based on the ribbon twist tolerances provided in the Detail Specification. If notolerances are provided, an angle scale with markings every 5 degrees with anaccuracy

、 of + 1 degree may be used as a default.3.2 Plumb LineA plumb line is used to check the vertical alignment of the fixture. The three adjustablefeet on the fixture are used to make corrections. See figure 1.3.3 Top Ribbon ClampThe ribbon clamp at the top of the fixture shall have a large smooth botto

、m surfacewhich is normal to the axis of the ribbon, so as to support the ribbon in a true verticalposition. The top ribbon clamp may have guide pins or other devices to facilitatealigning the top of the ribbon to ZERO degrees with respect to the marks on the bottomplate. See figure 2.TIA/EIA-455-131

、43.4 Bottom Ribbon ClampThe bottom ribbon clamp shall have sufficient weight and shall be balanced so as tohold the ribbon taut and true during preparation of the ribbon section under test. Seefigure 2. The weight of this clamp shall not exceed the weight of the specified ribbonload used during twis

、t measurement. See annex A.3.5 Weighted PointerThe weighted pointer shall apply a known load to the ribbon, and shall be equippedwith a device which indicates the degree of rotation of the specimen. See figure 2.The pointer shall be balanced to prevent side loading of the ribbon, which will inducetw

、ist. Refer to annex A for default test parameters.3.6 Calibrated ScaleThe scale will be used to verify the gauge length of the ribbon sample.4 Sampling and specimensRibbon specimens may be taken at any point along the ribbon length. Specimens shallbe chosen randomly for all production parameters. Th

、e ribbon gauge length shall beprovided in the Detail Specification; the overall specimen length shall be sufficientlylonger than the gauge length, to facilitate attachment of the clamps and test weight.Ribbon specimens shall be preconditioned according to the Detail Specification. Referto annex A fo

、r default gauge length and preconditioning parameters.TIA/EIA-455-13155 ProcedureTo ensure an accurate residual twist measurement, it is critical that the ribbon be heldin a true vertical position, and that the weighted pointer be balanced to avoid sideloading. Misalignments and off center loads wil

、l induce ribbon twist. The detailed test methods and specific twist measurement fixtures described belowrepresent one way to measure ribbon residual twist. Equivalent methods may be used.5.1 Verify that the test fixture will hold the ribbon sample in a vertical position.5.1.1 Use a plumb line to chec

、k the vertical alignment of the test fixture. See figure 1.Verify alignment daily when equipment is in use.5.2 Mount the ribbon sample in the test fixture as shown in figure 2. Note thatalignment of the top ribbon clamp is critical for a true vertical mounting of the ribbon. The ribbon should exit th

、is clamp normal to the surface of the clamp and the topslotted plate. The bottom clamp is free-hanging and will hold the ribbon taut in thefixture.5.3 With the ribbon threaded through the bottom slot, clamp the weighted pointer onthe ribbon. This pointer must be balanced to prevent side loading of t

、he ribbon. Thedistance from the top of this pointer clamp to the bottom of the top clamp is the ribbongauge length. See figure 2. Measure the ribbon gauge length, compare it to the DetailSpecification, and adjust the vertical position of the pointer as necessary. Record thefinal ribbon gauge length.

、5.4 Set the entire ribbon/bottom clamp/pointer assembly to the ZERO position. Thismeans that the ribbon is hanging straight (i.e. any natural twist has been taken out),and the pointer is reading ZERO degrees of twist. Turn the pointer by hand, ifnecessary, to take out any twist inherent in the ribbo

、n.5.5 Cut the ribbon below the pointer, as shown in figure 2, to release the bottomweight. Allow the ribbon and pointer to rotate freely.TIA/EIA-455-13165.6 When the pointer comes to rest, observe and record the final angle of the pointerwith respect to the initial ZERO position. See figure 3.5.7 Ca

、lculate the ribbon residual twist as described in clause 6.0, and record thevalue.6 Calculations and interpretation of resultsDivide the final angle (degrees) by the measured ribbon gauge length (cm) todetermine the ribbon residual twist (degrees per cm).Residual Twist = Final Angle .Measured Gauge
