This FOTP is part of the series of test procedures included within Reccmmended standard EIA/TIA-455. 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 The intent of this

25、procedure is to determine the ability of fiber optic components to withstand the effects of controlled amounts of ozone. Although intended primarily for the evaluation of parts such as interconnecting devices, the method may be applied to other components when applicable and when required by a Detai

26、l Specification. Intent. 1.2 Failure Modes. Potential failure modes for this test include, but are not limited to: a. Loosening or breaking of parts, b. Insert bonding failure, C. Excessive swelling of resilient materials, or other degradation of elastomers, d. Damage to interface seals. 1.3 Ozone H

27、azard. Ozone is a physiologically hazardous gas at elevated concentrations. Levels of acceptable industrial exposure have been established by the American Conference of Sovernmental Industrial Hygienists, 6500 Glenway Ave., Building D-7, Cincinnati, Ohio 45211. Ozone has a distinctive odor which is

28、initially discernible at low concentrations. It is likely to be present whenever voltages exist which are sufficient to cause partial or complete discharges in air or in other atmospheres containing oxygen. (It may also be formed in air by ultraviolet This method is similar to Method 1007.1 of MIL-S

29、TD-1344A. EIA TIA-455-189 92 3234b00 0556351 14 EIA/TIA-455-189 Page 2 radiation, as a combustion product, etc.) When the odor of ozone is persistently present or when ozone generating conditions continue, temporary impairment of the sense of smell could occur. Thus the concentration of ozone in the

30、 atmosphere should be measured using commercially available monitoring devices. Appropriate means, such as installation of exhaust vents, should be taken to maintain ozone concentrations in working areas within acceptable levels. For citizen health reasons, it should be noted that many large cities

31、of the world become very concerned whenever ozone levels exceed 100 pphm (parts per hundred million). 2. APPARATUS The apparatus and equipment required to perform this test shall be as listed in ASTM D 1149 and as summarized below. For addition

35、al apparatus details, refer to ASTM D 1149 or to MIL-STD-l344A, Method 1007.1. 3.1 Test Chamber. The test chamber shall be constructed of a material having minimal reaction to ozone and having a minimum volume of 0.11 to 0.14 cubic meters ( 4 to 5 cubic feet). The chamber shall be equipped with a gl

36、ass window or glass front door to permit visual inspection. In addition: a. The chamber shall provide adequate internal circulation with an air-ozone minimum velocity of 0.6 m/s (2 ft/s). b. The chamber shall include a means of controlling the chamber temperature from ambient to 7OoC (158OF), with t

37、emperature regulation maintained within I l0C (+ 1.8OF). c. Chamber exhaust air (containing ozone) shall be vented out of the test area. (See Ozone Hazard, 1.3.) 3.2 Ozone Generation. A means of generating and controlling an air-ozone stream shall be provided. A mercury vapor lamp is the most common

38、 source for generating ozone. With such a lamp, the ozone level can be easily controlled by means of a variable transformer. The ozone-generating source shall be located outside the chamber. Ths air can either be drawn directly from the laboratory or from a compressed air supply; in either case, ade

39、quate filtration of foreign matter from the air stream shall be provided. The air-ozone stream shall be introduced into the chamber in such a manner that statification of ozone is prevented. The air-ozone replacement rate or throughput rate shall be of a magnitude such that no appreciable reduction

40、in ozone concentration results from the introduction of test specimens. 3.3 Ozone Measuring Devices. Appropriate devices shall be provided to measure the concentration of ozone. 41、 4. SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS 4.1 samples, Select samples for FOTP-189 exposure, however, is limited to a period of 2 hours. In other words, FOTP-189 (and MIL-STD-1344) uses an extremely high ozone test level to compensate for a short tesz exposure time and lack of specimen strain. EIA/TIA-455-189 Page
