、E TEMPERATURE CYCLING EFFECTS ON OPTICAL FIBER UNITS, OPTICAL CABLE, AND OTHER PASSIVE FIBER OPTIC COMPONENTS Foreword (This Foreword is informative and not part of the Standard.) This Standard is from Standards Proposal No. SP-3-1768-RV2, formulated under the cognizance of the TIA TR-42.12 (nee FO-

、4.2) Subcommittee on Optical Fibers and Cables. This FOTP forms a part of the latest revision of Recommended Standard TIA-455. NOTE: This FOTP was previously published in EIA Recommended Standard RS-455 as EIA/TIA-455-3A. This FOTP also supersedes FOTP-52, previously published in EIA Recommended Sta

、ndard RS-455-52. This revision is significant in scope, yet retains a trail to the historic requirements. The main text comprises requirements for cable. It includes significant new language addressing establishment of thermal equilibrium and soak times, and states criteria governing interruption of

、 temperature cycles. The requirements for connectors and other devices remain as in Revision A, and are moved to a normative Annex to minimize confusion. The requirements for fiber in Revision A have been removed; users are directed to FOTP-234, TIA-455-234 (adoption of IEC 60793-1-42), for fiber te

、mperature cycling. There is one normative Annex. There are three normative tables exhibited at the end of text. Key words: connectors, optical devices. ANSI/TIA-455-3B iv This page blank. ANSI/TIA-455-3B 1 FOTP-3 PROCEDURE TO MEASURE TEMPERATURE CYCLING EFFECTS ON OPTICAL FIBER UNITS, OPTICAL CABLE,

、 AND OTHER PASSIVE FIBER OPTIC COMPONENTS 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 This test procedure describes a method for the determination of temperature cycling effects or the temperature dependence of attenuation on optical fiber units, cables, cable assemblies, connectors, and/or other passive fiber optic devices

、. This procedure tests the ability of the component to withstand changes in temperature of the surrounding atmosphere that may be encountered during operation. Measurement of optical fiber is covered in FOTP-234 (TIA-455-234) “IEC 60793-1-52 Optical Fibres - Part 1-52: Measurement Methods and Test P

、rocedures - Change of Temperature”. The simulation of temperature shock testing is covered in FOTP-71 (EIA/TIA-455-71A), “Procedure to Measure Temperature-Shock Effects on Fiber Optic Components.” 1.2 Typical indications of damage resulting from this test are: An excessive temporary or permanent cha

、nge in optical throughput which exceeds specified limits as defined in the Detail Specification. Broken parts, cracks, blisters, etc. in materials or accessories. Inability to mate or unmate, if the sample is a connector. Damage to seals or “O“ rings, if the sample is a connector or device. 1.3 The

、primary use of the test procedure is evaluation of optical fiber cables and connectors. Testing of optical fibers shall use FOTP-234, as noted above. Testing of fiber units shall be accomplished using the test procedure in the main test. Hereinafter, all uses of “cable” shall be interpreted to apply

、 to fiber units to the extent they are applicable. Testing of optical fiber connectors and other devices has been moved to Annex A (normative) in order to streamline the test methods. This Annex comprises the test procedure of FOTP-3, revision A. ANSI/TIA-455-3B 2 2 NORMATIVE REFERENCES Tests and me

、ds and Test Procedures - Change of Temperature 3 APPARATUS The following test equipment is required for this procedure. 3.1 Environmental chambers The chamber shall maintain a specified temperature within 2 C throughout the test duration. The chamber inside dimensions shall be large enough to accomm

、odate the sample and allow unrestricted air flow around the test sample. It may be desirable to have a window in the door to observe the sample during the test. If a combination of hot and cold chambers is used (not a recommended practice), they both must be able to change their temperature at an eq

、uivalent rate, and the transfer of the test sample must be made with both chambers at room ANSI/TIA-455-3B 3 temperature during the transfer. The chamber(s) shall provide an access port or ports through which the fiber unit or cable ends or sensor wires may extend, and which shall have the capabilit

、y of sufficiently sealing the cables and wires which may extend out of the chamber so that the specified temperatures can be maintained. 3.2 Temperature sensing device A temperature sensing device or devices shall be used to measure the air temperature in the chamber throughout the test. Additionall

、y, it may be desirable, or necessary, to use a temperature sensing device or devices to measure the temperature of the sample under test, particularly when dealing with cable samples having a large thermal mass. This sample temperature-sensing device is required for cables if soak times adequate to

、ensure true thermal equilibrium have not been predetermined (see 5.1.1 and 5.4.2). The sensing devices shall have an accuracy of 1 C across the temperature range of the test. 3.3 Temperature recording device A temperature recording device or devices shall be used to provide a record of the chamber a

、ir temperature throughout the test. It may be desirable to have a multi-channel recorder so that temperatures measured at several points around the sample can be recorded. If sample temperature sensing devices are used to ensure sample thermal equilibrium, then recording devices for the sample shall

、 also be used. The recorders shall have an accuracy of 1 C across the temperature range of the test. 3.4 Transmittance equipment Equipment for measuring the change in transmittance (throughput) of the transmitting fibers (either the sample fibers or fibers which are connected to the sample) shall be

、 as in accordance with FOTP-20. Alternatively unless otherwise specified in the Detail Specification, equipment for measuring attenuation as required by FOTP-78 or FOTP-171 for a particular type of fiber or device shall be used. Equipment for measuring the transmittance or attenuation shall be stable over the length of time required to perform the measurement. 4 SAMPLING AND SPECIMENS The test sample shall be a representative sample of the cable being tested. 4.1 Sample - optical fiber cable or cable assembly Unless otherwise specified, a sample of opti
