4、, stairclimbers, treadmills) covered under this Standard, that have the additional feature of generating electricalpower from user exercise and converting this to output power to be connected to a building branch circuit,effectively serving as a generator. See A2.4.A1.2 These requirements cover exer

5、cise machines with an on-board generator and inverter, with provisionfor connecting output power to building branch circuit power. These exercise machines areutility-interactive and can both accept power from the branch circuit as well as supply power back to thesupply circuit.A1.3 These requirement

6、s do not cover:a) Exercise machines with output power for standby use.b) Exercise machines with output power that charges standby battery packs which are separatefrom the exercise machine.c) Exercise machines with output power that provides power directly to other loads such asappliances, lighting,

8、R REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULA2.1 DRAIN RESISTOR A resistive element intended for dissipating a quantity of unneeded or excesspower into heat, in an exercise machine with power generating feature, such as when the powergenerated is not being provided to a branch circuit co

An electronic component resistor usedas part of an electronic control circuit (ie; on a circuit board) is not considered a drain resistor for thepurposes of these requirements.A2.2 INVERTER An electronic device that changes dc power to ac power.A2.3 UTILITY-INTERACTIVE INVERTER An inve

10、rter intended for use in parallel with an electric utilityto supply common loads.A2.4 POWER GENERATING UTILITY-INTERACTIVE CONNECTIVITY (PGUIC) A term used tocharacterize features for generating electrical power from user exercise and converting this to outputpower to be connected to a building bran

11、ch circuit, effectively serving as a generator.A2.5 STANDBY USE Providing an alternate source of electrical power to loads in buildings and facilitiesin the event that the primary power source fails, typically connected via a transfer switch.A3 ComponentsIn addition to the requirements of this Stand

12、ard, the following requirements apply.A3.1 A utility-interactive inverter and its electrical interconnection shall comply with the applicablerequirements of:a) the Standard for Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipmentfor Use With Distributed Energy Resources, UL 1741;b

13、) the Standard for Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems, IEEE1547; andc) the Standard for Conformance Test Procedures for Equipment Interconnecting DistributedResources with Electric Power Systems, IEEE 1547.1.A3.2 A rotational generator used to produce electric power, p

14、rovided as part of an exercise machine, shallcomply with:a) The applicable requirements for general purpose or component motors of Section 5.16 ofthis Standard, as applicable, orb) The Standard for Rotating Electrical Machines General Requirements, UL 1004-1; and theStandard for Electric Generators,

15、 UL 1004-4A3.3 A drain resistor, when provided, shall be included with and comply with all tests required by thisStandard for the end product. Additionally, electrical insulating material used as part of the resistorconstruction shall comply with Section 15 of this Standard.CONSTRUCTIONA4 Power Supp

16、ly ConnectionsSTANDARD NUMBER: UL 1647 -2-UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULA4.1 An exercise machine intended to be connected to a branch circuit system of a building, shall beconnected in accordance with the following, and shall

17、 be in accordance with applicable parts of theNational Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA 70.A4.2 The method of supply connection shall be:a) Cord connection utilizing Type SJ, SJT, SJO cord, or a type at least equally serviceable forthe application,and terminated or connected as specified in A4.3 and A4.4; o

18、rb) Other methods permitted by UL 1741 or National Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 for utility-interactive equipment.A4.3 Cord Termination at building end If cord connection is employed for power supply connection, themethod of cord termination and connection of the cord at the building circuit end shal

19、l be one of thefollowing:a) Cord terminated in a standardized twist-lock attachment plug configuration, such as a NEMAL5-15P.b) Cord terminated with a non-standardized attachment plug configuration, intended for plug-inconnection to appropriate mating device (connector or receptacle) installed in wa

20、ll in thebuilding (See A4.5). Standard NEMA configurations of Appendix B of UL 498, other than asspecified in A4.3(a), shall not be employed.c) Other methods permitted by the Standard for Inverters, Converters, Controllers andInterconnection System Equipment for Use With Distributed Energy Resources

21、, UL 1741 orNational Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 for utility-interactive equipment, provided that cord isterminated in minimum 6 inch long individual leads, intended for permanent connection tojunction box or panel, and means provided to prevent transmission of strain to wiringconnections when exerc

22、ise machines are moved (e.g., via permanent securement of exercisemachine, breakaway device, or equivalent).A4.4 Cord Termination at product end If cord connection is employed for power supply connection, themethod of connection of the cord at the exercise machine end shall be:a) Attached via strain

23、 relief, with individual leads connected internally to the exercise machine.Strain relief means and internal connection means shall comply with this Standard;b) General use cord set (i.e.; detachable power supply cord) of standard configuration (i.e. IEC60320-1 type C13, C15) connection at exercise

24、machine end, additionally secured to theexercise machine via means requiring a tool for detachment; orc) General use cord set other than standard configuration connection at exercise machine endas specified in A4.4(b).A4.5 If a non-standardized attachment plug configuration is used as specified in A

Additions or modifications to the tests shallbe as noted in this Annex A.A5.2 Any applicable tests from the Standard Inverters, Converters, Controllers and InterconnectionSystem Equipment for Us

27、e with Distributed Energy Resources, UL 1741 for the inverter not conducted onthe inverters, or dependent on the combination of the inverter and exercise machine combination, shall beconducted as part of this evaluation.A5.3 Cord-connected exercise machines with PGUIC where the pins are accessible a

28、t the attachmentplug or appliance inlet without the use of a tool shall be subjected to the Backfeed Protection Test asspecified in Annex FFF of UL 1778.A6 RATINGA6.1 If the exercise machine with PGUIC can consume power in any mode of operation from the buildingsupply to which it is connected, it sh

29、all be rated in accordance with Section 80.A6.2 In addition to any rating required by A6.1, exercise machines with PGUIC shall be rated inaccordance with utility interactive ratings of Table 62.1 of the Standard Inverters, Converters, Controllersand Interconnection System Equipment for Use with Dist

30、ributed Energy Resources, UL 1741.MARKINGSA7 GeneralA7.1 Except as noted below, exercise machines with PGUIC feature shall be marked as required bySection 81. Additionally, the inverter component shall be marked as required by the Standard Inverters,Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System

31、 Equipment for Use with Distributed EnergyResources, UL 1741.Exception: Markings required on the inverter by UL 1741 are not required to be provided on the inverterif equivalent marking is factory installed with the exercise machine.A7.2 Exercise machines with PGUIC shall be marked with the followin

32、g text or equivalent:WARNING Improper installation may cause fire or electric shock. Connect only to a dedicatedbranch circuit suitable for backfeed. Do not disconnect under load. See installation instructionsfor power connection.A7.3 For cord connected machines the marking specified in A7.2 shall b

33、e provided on a cord tag:a) complying with the Permanence of Cord Tag Test, Section 60, of UL 73, andb) applied to the power supply cord within 6 inches of the individual leads or face of theattachment plug.A7.4 For permanently connected machines the marking specified in A7.2 shall be provided near

35、ections 82 86.A8.2 The exercise machines shall include shall include instructions required by Sections 65 and 66 of theStandard Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for Use WithDistributed Energy Resources, UL 1741.Exception: Inverter instructions of UL 1741 are no

36、t required to be provided if equivalent instructions areprovided with the exercise machine.A8.3 The instructions of 83.5 of UL 1647 shall include the text of the marking specified in A7.2.A8.4 The installation instructions shall include the following, or equivalent:a) The product must be installed o

37、n a dedicated branch circuit.b) The branch circuit protection must be suitable for backfeedc) The individual branch circuit shall be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance withthe National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70).d) Specification of the maximum number of exercise machines with PGU

38、IC feature to beinstalled on an individual branch circuit and indicate that exercise machines with PGUIC featureshould not be installed in numbers greater than specified.e) For cord and plug connected machines, identification of the appropriate receptacle to beinstalled to mate with the attachment p

39、lug provided on the power supply cord and, for a non-standardized configuration, indicate that the receptacle is provided with the exercise machine.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:Historically, exercise machines were purely mechanical, and relied on mechanical means to provideresistance to the user for exerc

40、ise purposes (i.e. exercise bike turning a fan or a wheel with friction belt).Over time, exercise machines added electronic and electric features, usually connected via cord and plugto the wall, and used the electricity to power the braking means, the user display, and other controls. Smallinternal

41、generators were also added to some exercise machines, in order to generate and provide internalpower to its own controls. For example exercise bikes that have no power cord and do not rely on externalpower, but generate their own power to supply the controls, display, brake, and onboard battery.With

42、 the continued push for green energy, further innovation and efficiency continued to take thistechnology further. Exercise machines are now being developed and put in use that harnesses the powerproduced by human effort/exercise, to not only power the exercise machine itself, but to capture theexces

43、s energy and make this available locally to power other loads within the building. This technology isbeing put in place on exercise bikes, stair climbers, elliptical machines, and other machines that generaterotational motion from user exertion, and converts this via a generator into electrical powe

44、r. This power isthen modified via an inverter, and made available to supplement grid connected branch circuit power.While the NEC and inverter systems safety requirements provide guidance and requirements for largerand more “permanent” power systems, these smaller, more portable, more “plug and play

45、” turnkeysystems are becoming more popular. 46、UCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULas multiple devices connected in “banks” via a central inverter tied to the branch circuit in health clubs.These newer systems need to be considered and addressed in order to continue to safely enable thistechnology, while addressing potential hazards

47、that may exist.The purpose of these requirements is to provide guidance as well as specific requirements to apply forexercise machine with onboard electric power generating function, intended to be connected to the livepower grid as a grid-interactive device.Copyright 2017 UL LLCUL LLC, in performin
