3、ze for GU24 outlet-box lampholdersDECISION:The lead wires of an outlet-box lampholder shall not be smaller than 16 AWG (1.3 mm2).Exception: This requirement does not apply to outlet-box lampholders provided with GU24 or GU24-1lampholders.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:The minimum 16 AWG lead wire requiremen

4、t for outlet box lampholders goes back to the eleventh editionof UL 496 when the scope of the standard was limited to Edison-base lampholders. Although therequirement was carried through subsequent revisions of the standard when the scope was extended toinclude fluorescent lampholders, it did not an

5、ticipate GU24 outlet-box lampholders.The current-carrying capacity of 16 AWG conductors is suitable for screw lampholders that can be ratedup to 600 Volts, with a maximum power rating of 660 Watts for medium or 2000 Watts for mogul bases.GU24 lampholders on the other hand are limited to 300 V by ANS

6、I_ANSLG C81.62 and intended forenergy efficient lamp loads of less than 100 Watts. Furthermore, Clause SA2.3 of UL 496 prohibitsbase-to-base adapters that would allow a GU24 holder to accept an Edison screw-base. It should also benoted that an independent proposal to limit the rating of GU24 lamphol

7、ders to 300 Watts has alreadygained STP consensus.In conclusion, 18 AWG lead wires have sufficient current carrying capacity for GU24 lampholders andshould be permitted for this application. This is consistent with the requirements for fluorescent luminairesand lighting components such as ballasts a
