The designations Schedule 40, Sche

5、dule 80, Type EB, Type A refer toUSA trade sizes of conduit having iron pipe-size outside diameters and specific wall thicknesses.Couplings, adapters, expansion, expansion-deflection, or deflection joints, and similar fittings are intendedto be used with Schedule 40, Schedule 80, Type EB and Type A

6、rigid PVC conduit, and elbows, inaccordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70.1.2.5 The expansion joints covered by these requirements are fittings intended to compensate for linearthermal expansion of a span of Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 rigid PVC) conduit.5.1.1 A rigid PVC conduit

7、fitting shall be constructed of an unplasticized polyvinyl chloride material, withor without components made of other materials, that has been determined to be acceptable for theapplication.5.4 Expansion, expansion-deflection, or deflection joints5.4.1 An expansion joint shall be capable of being co

8、nnected to rigid PVC conduit or a coupling at bothends by means of a solvent type cement. An expansion joint is intended to compensate only for linearthermal expansion of a span of rigid PVC conduit.5.4.1.1 An expansion-deflection joint is intended to compensate for linear expansion and compensate f

9、orlateral or angular deflection in a span of rigid PVC conduit.5.4.1.2 A deflection joint intends to compensate only for lateral or angular deflection in a span of rigid PVCconduit.5.4.1.3 An expansion, expansion-deflection or deflection joint shall be capable of being connected to rigidPVC conduit

10、or a coupling at both ends by means of a solvent type cement.5.4.2 Unless an expansion joint, which allows movement between the joint and adjacent conduit lengthsis fastened at one end to rigid PVC conduit, a stop shall be provided to prevent the movable member ofthe joint from exposing either of th

12、ment position, shall be free of any snags that would impede fish tape or wires frombeing passed through the joint. The ends shall be beveled to remove any existing snags.7.4 Expansion, expansion-deflection, or deflection joints7.4.1 General7.4.1.1 An expansion, expansion-deflection, or deflection jo

13、int shall be assembled to conduit inaccordance with 7.4.1.7. 18、ull reciprocation cycle forconducting the Reciprocation test in 7.4.3.2 is increased to correspond to the maximum declareddeflection limit as permitted in 7.4.1.2.7.4.1.6 A deflection joint shall be subjected to the test in 7.4.4.7.4.1.7 For the tests in Table 7.4, a set of expansion, expansion-defl

19、ection, or deflection joints shallconsist of six samples each of the smallest, the largest, and one intermediate trade size in a line of joints,and any additional trade size that employs a construction or feature unique to that trade size.7.4.1.8 With the exception of the low-temperature handling te

20、st in 7.2.7, the tests in 7.2 shall be conductedonly on the PVC components of expansion, expansion-deflection or deflection joints. The bending test in7.2.8 and the pull test in 7.2.9 are not applicable for such joints.7.4.1.9 A component of the body of an expansion-deflection, or deflection joint c

22、-deflection, or deflection joints, one set of joints shall beassembled in the intended manner to PVC conduit having the dimensions specified in Tables 4.1 and 4.2.7.4.3 Reciprocation test7.4.3.1 An expansion or expansion-deflection joint shall be conditioned as described in 7.4.3.2.7.4.3.2 Each expa

23、nsion or expansion-deflection joint assembled to rigid PVC conduit as required by7.4.1.7 and 7.4.2.1 shall be subjected to 500 cycles of reciprocation. One cycle of reciprocation shallconsist of a 3/4 in (19.1 mm) insertion of the conduit into the joint, followed by withdrawal of the conduitfrom the

24、 joint to its original position. The speed of insertion and withdrawal shall not exceed 0.50 in (12.7mm) per minute. Following the test, the samples shall be inspected and there shall be no signs of damagethat would indicate that the product could not perform its intended function. In case of doubt,

25、 a separateset of samples shall be subjected to the test.7.4.3.3 An expansion, expansion-deflection or deflection joint intended for use outdoors or in a wetlocation shall be subjected to the wet locations test in 7.3.2 following the reciprocation conditioning.7.4.4 Deflection test7.4.4.1 Each expan

26、sion-deflection or deflection joint assembled to rigid PVC conduit as required by7.4.1.5 and 7.4.2.1 shall be subjected to 500 cycles of deflection. The deflection shall consist of themovement of one end of the joint through a parallel misalignment along the plane of the longitudinal axisof the join

27、t to the maximum amount of deflection declared by the manufacturer. One cycle shall consist ofthis movement in one direction through the center point, then in the other direction. See Figure 7.6.Following the test, the samples shall be inspected and there shall be no signs of damage that wouldindica

28、te that the product could not perform its intended function. In case of doubt, a separate set ofsamples shall be subjected to the test.7.4.4.2 An expansion-deflection or deflection joint intended for use outdoors or in a wet location shall besubjected to the wet locations test in 7.3.2 following the

32、equirements in 7.5.2 - 7.5.4.7.5.2 Vertical burning flame test7.5.2.1 Specimen flame bars of the material shall be subjected to the Vertical Burning Test (section 8) inthe Standard for Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances, UL 94.Ten specimens shall be teste

(12.7 mm by 127 mm) and be of a thickness representing the minimum thickness of the product.7.5.3 Tensile strength and elongation test7.5.3.1 Plaque specimens of

36、 material shall be subjected to the tensile strength and elongation testaccording to the Standard for Polymeric Materials - Use in Electrical Equipment Evaluations, UL 746C.Five samples shall be tested in the as-received condition to benchmark the performance. Five samplesshall be tested after 70C w

37、ater absorption conditioning according to the Water Exposure and Immersiontests (sections 26 and 58) in UL 746C. Five additional samples of specimens for a joint intended for useoutdoors or in wet locations shall be tested following exposure to xenon-arc ultra-violet light and water for1000 hours ac

38、cording to the Ultraviolet Light Exposure Test (section 57) in UL 746C. After eachconditioning, at least 70 percent of the tensile strength and elongation measured in the as-receivedcondition shall be retained. The test specimens shall be in accordance with ASTM D412, Standard TestMethods for Vulcan

39、ized Rubber and Thermoplastic Elastomers - Tension, Die C.7.5.4 Identification of compounds7.5.4.1 The material shall be subjected to the infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests specified in accordance with the Standard forPolyme

40、ric Materials - Short Term Property Evaluations, UL 746A.9.2.4 Where specified, the deflection range of an expansion-deflection, or deflection joint shall be providedwith the maximum deflection range for the joint in the installation instructions or marked on the smallestunit carton, when shipped fr

41、om the factory.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:The UL Standard for Schedule 40, 80, Type EB and Type A Rigid PVC Conduit and Fittings, UL 651,currently does not include requirements for expansion-deflection joints or deflection joints in the standard.This proposal serves to provide the requirements to evalua

42、te the joint for the degree of movementspecified by the manufacturer, and provided in the installation instructions with the fitting. Theserequirements provide an alternative approach to testing for deflection where conditions for the expansionjoint has a declared defection range that is considered

43、to be represented by the reciprocations testsequence. These requirements are significantly correlated with requirements for expansion-deflection anddeflection fittings for metallic conduit already found in UL 514B, the Standard for Safety for Conduit, Cableand Cable Fittings.Copyright 2014 Underwrit
