10、ydischarge (HID) lamps that require an external starting pulse or pulses. These requirements are forignitors that could be mounted outside of or remote from a luminaire as well as ignitors that must beinstalled within the electrical enclosure of a luminaire or sign.1.2 These requirements include 2,

11、3, and 4 wire ignitors for use with high-pressure sodium and metalhalide lamps, as well as ignitors known as hot re-strike type.1.3 These requirements also cover certain auxiliaries for HID lamps and ballasts: two level dimming (bycapacitors), time-out circuits, and controls for auxiliary tungsten l

12、amps.1.4 These requirements do not cover ballasts that connect with the devices covered by this outline.2 General2.1 Components2.1.1 Except as indicated in 2.1.2, a component of a product covered by this outline shall comply with therequirements for that component. See Appendix A for a list of stand

13、ards covering components used in theproducts covered by this outline.2.1.2 A component is not required to comply with a specific requirement that:a) Involves a feature or characteristic not required in the application of the component in theproduct covered by this outline, orb) Is superseded by a re

20、SION FROM UL3 Glossary3.1 For the purpose of this outline the following definitions apply:3.2 DEVICE A term, when used, refers to all devices covered by this outline. Requirements pertainingto specific devices are so noted.3.3 DEVICE, BUILT-IN A device specifically designed to be contained within a

21、luminaire or theelectrical enclosure of a sign. A device with lead wires or terminals that are not enclosed would beconsidered a built-in device.3.4 DEVICE, INDEPENDENT A device that has its own enclosure and can be mounted separately orattached to the outside of a luminaire or sign without any addi

22、tional enclosure. This may consist of abuilt-in device housed in a suitable enclosure which provides all the necessary protection according toits rating. A device not identified as an independent device would be considered, by default, to be built-in.3.5 IGNITOR A device intended to generate voltage

23、 pulses to start discharge lamps and which doesnot provide for the preheating of electrodes.3.6 LOCATION, DRY A location not normally subject to dampness or wetness. A location classifiedas dry may be temporarily subject to dampness, for example, a building under construction.3.7 LOCATION, DAMP A lo

24、cation protected from weather and not subject to direct exposure orsaturation by water but subject to moderated degrees of moisture, for example, the inside of a sign orluminaire intended for wet locations.3.8 LOCATION, OUTDOOR See definition of damp location above.3.9 POWER CAPACITOR A capacitor th

25、at is connected:a) in series with a lamp or lamps and provides the device impedance for the lamp current; orb) across the input of the device or across an extension of the primary winding for power-factorcorrection.3.10 PEAK VOLTAGE Highest value of the voltage pulses generated by an ignitor at the

26、output.3.11 RATED MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE, tc The highest permissible temperature that may occur onthe outer surface (at the indicated place, if marked) under normal operating conditions and at the ratedvoltage or the maximum of the rated voltage range. 28、N WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULCONSTRUCTION4 Construction4.1 Types of devices4.1.1 For guidance in the use of this section, the intended usage, either an independent device or built-indevice, would first be determined. Additional requirements are described throughout this outline.4.1.2 Examples of an i

29、ndependent device would be:a) A device that can be mounted remote from a luminaire or a sign.b) A device with lead wires or terminals on the side intended for mounting and could beattached to, but outside of the electrical enclosure of a luminaire.4.1.3 Examples of a built-in device would be:a) A de

30、vice with unenclosed lead wires or terminals.b) A device with an incomplete enclosure.4.1.4 Devices are categorized according to the use for which they are intended. A device in one categoryis acceptable, with respect to protection against corrosion, is also acceptable in the category thatprecedes i

31、t in the following list:a) A device only intended for use an indoor, dry location.b) A Damp (Outdoor) Type 1 or Type 2 device is acceptable for use in:1) Outdoor equipment;2) A luminaire intended for use in wet or damp locations; or3) An outdoor sign.c) A weatherproof device is intended for exposure

33、liable to be subjected, without increasing the risk of electric shock or fire due to a reduction of the requiredspacing to live parts or the loosening or displacement of live parts. The acceptability of the enclosure isfurther determined by intended usage of the device and factors such as the enclos

34、ure material, theenclosure material thickness, and the openings in the enclosure.4.2.2 A device shall be provided with an enclosure of metal or of a polymeric material that has beeninvestigated and found to be evaluated for the intended use. See 4.12 for requirements for a polymericmaterial used as

42、spacingbetween circular openings is 3 mm (0.12 in).c) Rectangular (or square) openings have dimensions not exceeding 3 mm (0.12 in) across and30 mm (1.18 in) in length.d) The pattern of openings for metal enclosures is such that the through air clearance betweenlive parts and the dead metal enclosur

46、ainstcorrosion for dry and damp (outdoor) location ratings. Enclosures or other parts constructed of iron orsteel shall be suitably protected from rusting by painting, plating, or an equivalent. Both inside and outsidesurfaces of an enclosure shall be protected. A protective coating need not be appl

47、ied to:a) The interior of a device enclosure that is completely filled with potting compound; orb) Flat metal surfaces that are tightly clamped together.4.3.2 A device marked with a Damp (Outdoor) Type 1 rating shall comply with 4.3.1 and 4.3.3, and havelead wire insulation that complies with 4.7.10

48、.4.3.3 A device marked with a Damp (Outdoor) Type 1 rating, and incorporating pre-painted steel orsteel with a metallic ASTM coating designated G60 or G90 is permitted to have untreated sheared edgesor punched holes.4.3.4 A ferrous metal enclosure of a device marked with a Damp (Outdoor) Type 2 rati

49、ng shall be pottedor compound filled and protected against corrosion as specified in Table 4.2. In lieu of corrosionresistance the metallic coatings specified in Table 4.2, a steel enclosure provided with an organic coatingcomplies with this requirement if comparative tests with galvanized-sheet steel (without annealing, wiping,or other surface treatment) conforming to ASTM coating designation G60 indicate the coating providesequivalent protection.
