7、EPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULINTRODUCTION1 Scope1.1 These requirements cover manually operated shutoff and metering valves used in compressed andfuel gas piping systems, including manifolds, and with equipment and appliances as defined herein, otherthan those for anhydrous am
8、monia and are usually designated as gas-line service valves.1.2 Shutoff valves covered by these requirements are for use in systems and facilities where completeshutoff is required. Metering type valves are used in piping and equipment systems where completeshutoff is not required.1.3 Shut-off valve
9、s of the type commonly referred to as cylinder valves used on containers constructedunder Department of Transportation (DOT) or Transport Canada (TC) Specifications are covered by therequirements in the Standard for Cylinder Valves, UL 1769.1.4 Gas-line shut-off valves for use with liquefied petrole
10、um gases, within the scope of NFPA 58, LP-GasCode, or anhydrous ammonia within the scope of Safety Requirements for the Storage and Handling ofAnhydrous Ammonia, ANSI/CGA G-2.1 (ANSI 61.1K) are covered by the requirements in the Standard forFlow Control Valves for Anhydrous Ammonia and LP-Gas, UL 12
11、5.1.5 Automatic shutoff valves that would use pressure, temperature (heat) or electricity or combination ofsuch for operation and self-closing types are covered by the requirements in the Standard for Valves forFlammable Fluids, UL 842 or the Standard for Electrically Operated Valves, UL 429.1.6 The
12、se requirements do not apply to valves for compressed gases for use in refrigerated storagesystems.1.7 Except for such observations as are required to ascertain performance characteristics, the assigningof flow capacity ratings are not within the scope of these requirements.2 General2.1 Components2.
13、1.1 Except as indicated in 2.1.2, a component of a product covered by this outline shall comply with therequirements for that component.2.1.2 A component is not required to comply with a specific requirement that:a) Involves a feature of characteristic not required in the application of the componen

17、ied compressed gas that isdissolved in a solvent.3.3 FUEL GAS Acetylene, hydrogen, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LP-Gas),methylacetylene-propadiene stabilized gas (MPS-Gas), methane, and other liquefied and non-liquefiedflammable gases, not including biofuels, that are stable because of thei
18、r composition or because of theconditions of storage.3.4 LIQUEFIED COMPRESSED GAS A gas that under the charged pressure is partially liquid at atemperature of 70.0F (21.1C).3.5 LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LP-GAS OR LPG) Any material having a vapor pressure notexceeding that allowed for commercial propa
19、ne composed predominantly of the following hydrocarbons,either by themselves (except propylene) or as mixtures: propane, propylene, butane (normal butane orisobutane) and butylenes.3.6 METERING VALVE A valve that does not close off the flow of gas completely at the seatingarea but regulates the flow

21、e and Temperature Rating4.1 The pressure rating of a valve shall not be less than the pressure rating of the piping system orequipment to which it is installed.4.2 Valves covered by these requirements shall have a minimum ambient temperature rating range ofminus 40 plus 125F (minus 40 plus 52C).4.3
22、If a valve is to be marked with the term Fuel Gas and not the specific fuel gas(es), the valve shallbe suitable for all gases specified in 3.3. The maximum pressure for these gases, other than acetylene,shall be the same.CONSTRUCTION5 General5.1 A valve shall include all of the components required f
23、or its normal function and installation, and shallbe furnished as a single unit or assembly.5.2 When a valve is of a design that requires the use of special pipe flanges, gaskets, bolts, or otherspecial fittings or parts for making a proper installation, such parts shall be furnished by the manufact
24、urerwith each valve.5.3 The construction of a valve shall be such that parts can be reassembled after being dismantled to theextent provided for routine maintenance.5.4 Means shall be provided for the purpose of making any required field adjustment.5.5 A valve with socket or butt weld ends shall be
25、constructed so that it is capable of being installedwithout damaging nonmetallic seats or seals. Instructions for accomplishing this shall accompany eachvalve.5.6 A seat disc shall be attached to its poppet or holder, or otherwise assembled so as to prevent it frombecoming dislocated under service c
26、onditions. The means to secure the disc shall not rely on cement oradhesive.5.7 A shutoff valve shall not be equipped with a bypass or other means to prevent it from closingcompletely. Metering type valves are permitted to have a bypass or incorporate a seating mechanism thatdoes not close completel

28、gned for connection of pipe shall be constructed with a section toserve as a wrench grip.6.2 Pipe threads shall be in accordance with the Standard for Pipe Threads, ANSI/ASME B1.20.1.Exception: Valves intended for use in installations where pipe fittings incorporate other than NPT typethreads shall
29、be permitted to be provided with pipe threads complying with a national pipe thread standardcompatible with those fittings. The pipe thread type shall be identified in accordance with 25.3.6.3 Joints in a body constructed of two or more parts shall be prevented from loosening as the result ofthe tur
30、ning effort exerted by connecting or disconnecting piping. See the Deformation Test, Section 12.6.4 A valve assembly intended for attachment to pipe larger than 4-inch (102 mm) nominal size shall beprovided with flanged pipe connections. A flange shall conform to the appropriate American NationalSta
31、ndard for Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings covering the material from which the flange is made, orit shall be found by investigation to be acceptable for the application. See 5.2.6.5 Openings for bolts or screws used for assembly shall not extend through the outer walls of a bodyinto a liquid-handl
32、ing section.6.6 When warping of a casting affects the tightness of fluid-confining joints or the required fit of parts, thecasting shall be stress-relieved to reduce the risk of warping.6.7 Each cleanout and drain opening shall be closed by a standard pipe plug or a threaded shoulderedplug. A gasket
33、 shall be retained by the valve body or the plug when the plug is removed.7 Materials7.1 An operating or gas-confining part of a valve shall have the strength and durability to provide reliableservice of the part and of the assembly.7.2 To comply with the requirement of 7.1, a material for gas-confi
34、ning parts of a valve intended for fuelgases shall have a minimum melting point (solidus temperature) of not less than 1500F (816C). Amaterial for gas-confining parts of non-fuel gases and operating parts, other than handwheels and levers,shall have a melting point (solidus temperature) of not less
35、than 950F (510C) and a tensile strength ofnot less than 10,000 psi (68.9 MPa) at 400F (204C).Exception: A valve disc, soft seat, seal ring, diaphragm, or gasket is not required to comply with thisrequirement.7.3 A part in contact with the fluid(s) to be handled shall be resistant to the action of su
36、ch fluid(s).7.4 With reference to the requirement in 7.3, elastomeric materials shall be subjected to the followingtests:a) Accelerated Aging Test, Section 17;b) Fluid Compatibility Test, Section 18;c) Low Temperature Test, Section 19; andJULY 25, 2014 UL 1477 7UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED

38、8.Exception: Acetal polymers, chlorotrifluorethylene polymers, tetrafluorethylene, fluorinated ethylenepropylene polymers and polyamides of composition polyhexamethylene adipamide or polycaproamidepolymers (nylon 6, 6/6 or 6/16) shall only be subjected to the Accelerated Aging Test, Section 17.7.5 N
39、onmetallic materials utilized in the gas stream of a valve intended for use with oxygen shall becompatible with oxygen. See 17.3 for elastomeric materials.7.6 With reference to the requirement in 7.5 for polymeric materials, chlorotrifluorethylene polymers,tetrafluoroethylene, fluorinated ethylene p
40、ropylene polymers and polyamides of compositionpolyhexamethylene adipamide or polycaproamide polymers (Nylon 6 or 6/16) shall be permitted.7.7 Copper or a copper alloy exceeding 67 percent copper shall not be used for a part in contact withacetylene or MPS-Gas.7.8 When corrosion of a part interferes
41、 with the proper function of a valve, the part shall be of acorrosion-resistant material or be provided with a corrosion-resistant protective coating, in accordancewith 7.9.7.9 Cadmium plating shall have a thickness of no less than 0.0003 inch (0.008 mm), and zinc plating shallhave a thickness of no
42、 less than 0.0005 inch (0.013 mm).Exception: On parts where threads constitute the major portion of the area, the thickness of the cadmiumor zinc plating shall be no less than 0.00015 inch (0.0038 mm).7.10 A pressure confining brass part containing more than 15% zinc shall be subjected to the MoistA
43、mmonia Air Stress Cracking Test, Section 20.7.11 Nonductile cast iron (regular gray iron) shall not be used for bodies or closures for fuel gas valves.This does not prohibit the use of nodular iron.7.12 Aluminum or aluminum alloys shall not be used for parts in contact with oxygen or oxygen enriched
44、gases, where the percentage of oxygen exceeds 21 percent by volume, for valves having a pressurerating greater than 435 psig (3.0 MPa).7.13 Metals used in combination shall be galvanically compatible. Aluminum shall not be used incombination with copper or copper alloy.7.14 A brazing material used f

46、 a stuffing box, or other means for sealing, to prevent leakage at the valve stem.8.2 When packing is used to prevent leakage around a valve stem, and the design is such that it requiresthe user to adjust or renew the packing during normal usage or as wear occurs, a stuffing box conformingto all of
47、the following shall be used:a) The stuffing box shall be located so that it is subjected to discharge side pressure;b) The stuffing box shall be provided with a removable, shouldered, unthreaded follower gland,and shall be provided with a nut or other means for adjusting the gland to maintain pressu
48、re onthe packing;c) The stuffing box gland shall be made of corrosion-resistant material; andd) The stuffing box shall be fully packed prior to shipment of the valve.8.3 The stuffing box shall be fully packed prior to shipment of the valve.8.4 When corrosion of a valve stem is capable of damaging a
49、packing or seal material and result inleakage, the stem shall be of corrosion-resistant material.8.5 A valve stem shall be constructed so that it is incapable of being completely withdrawn from the valveby reverse rotation. Threads of a valve stem shall not enter a stuffing box recess.8.6 A stem shall be of sufficient length to permit repacking the stuffing box without requiring the part to bedismantled.8.7 A shutoff valve that incorporates a handwheel and stem closure mechanism, such as globe, angle, orgate type valves, shall be constructed to ha
