STD-UL SUBJECT 1783-ENGL 1779 7275775 077b91L 230 D APRIL 5, 1999 SUBJECT 1783 5 INTRODUCTION 1 Scope 1.1 These requirements cover direct connect systems that are intended to provide for direct connection between a solid-fuel burn

、ing appliance and a masonry fireplace chimney. Solid-fuel burning appliances include fireplace stoves, room heaters, and fireplace inserts. Direct connect systems are intended for installation in accordance with the Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents and Solid-Fuel Burning Appliances, NFPA 21

、1. 2 General 2.1 Terminology 2.1.1 The term “product“ as used in these requirements refers to an entire direct connect system or any part thereof covered by these requirements unless specifically noted otherwise. 2.2 Units of measurement 2.2.1 If a value for measurement is followed by a value in oth

、er units in parentheses, the second value may be only approximate. The first stated value is the requirement. 2.3 Components 2.3.1 Except as indicated in 2.3.2, a component of a product covered by this standard shall comply with the requirements for that component. 2.3.2 A component need not comply

、with a specific requirement that: a) Involves a feature or characteristic not needed in the application of the component in the product covered by this standard, or b) Is superseded by a requirement in this standard. 2.3.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its recognized rating establishe

、d for the intended conditions of use. 2.3.4 Specific components are recognized as being incomplete in construction features or restricted in performance capabilities. Such components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures not exceeding specified limits, and

、shall be used only under those specific conditions for which they have been recognized. 3 Glossary 3.1 DIRECT CONNECTION - The type of flue connection required between a solid-fuel burning appliance and a masonry fireplace chimney, wherein a connector pipe extends from the appliance flue collar at l

、fireplace construction requirements specified and/or illustrated in the instructions, that it is free from cracks, loose mortar, creosote deposits or other blockage, or other signs of deterioration. The instructions shall also state that if evidence of deterioration is noted, the product should not

、be installed or used until repairs have been made to the fireplace. d) Description of any limitations with respect to installation and minimum installation clearances. e) Details concerning the method of joining two or more parts to constitute the intended assembly, and the like. f) Instructions for

、 removal or securement of the fireplace damper, if installation of the system renders the existing fireplace damper control inaccessible. g) Illustrations that completely describe the installation of the assembly and connection through the damper area and into the flue lining. h) A statement to the

、installer to verify that the size of the chimney is such that its cross- sectional area is not greater than three times the cross-sectional area of the direct connector system flue pipe, with examples provided as to how to make such a verification. i) A statement advising the installer to contact lo

、cal building or fire officials concerning any installation restrictions or need for inspection of the product installation. APRIL 5. 1999 SUBJECT 1783 7 4.3 Maintenance instructions 4.3.1 Maintenance instructions shall be provided with each product. 4.3.2 The maintenance instructions shall include p

Each part of the assembly shall be constructed for ready attachment of one to the other without requiring alteration, cutting, t

、hreading, drilling, welding, or similar task by the installer. Exception: An assembly or component pari intended to be cut to length or to be fitted by the installer may be provided if means are furnished for joining any altered pari to a companion pari or assembly. All fasteners required to complet

、e the assembly shall be provided with the product by the manufacturer. Drilling is acceptable if: a) The drilling operation does not weaken the assembly; and b) The size of the required drill bit is specified and instructions clearly describe the locations to be drilled, such as by the use of templa
