、d the CO concentration andpressure in each can. Using Boyles Law (Equation 1 below), calculate the volume of gas (CO andbalance gas) in each can at STP. This volume will indicate the maximum volume of the dispensed gas (atSTP conditions) at which the concentration as measured in 5.5 can exist (i.e.

、worst-case COconcentration produced by a fully-dispensed can). The Ideal Gas Law shall then be applied to verify thatthe total amount of CO in the can does not exceed 3.22 x 10-4moles (approximately 9.0 mg) of CO at25C, 1 atm.NOTE: Equivalent concentrations that exceed the maximum allowable number o

、f moles are to beindividually assessed. Additionally, an equivalent number of moles that exceeds the maximum of 1850ppm in concentration are to be individually assessed. See example below:SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 SUBJECT 2075A 5UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION

、WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULCO Test Kit (example)Measured CO concentration (inside can, at 298.15K): 1850 ppmCalculated internal can volume: 0.36 LCalculated internal can pressure: 11.5 barAt STP (298.15K, 1.01325 bar):Equation 1: P1V1=P2V2(Boyles Law):in which:P1= pressure within the can at 298.15KV1

、 fixed internal volume of the canP1= the standard ambient pressure at 298.15K andSolve for V2(11.5 bar)(0.36L) = (1.01325 bar)(V2)WhereV2= (11.5 x 0.36)/(1.01325) = 4.086 LThis result indicates that the measured CO concentration of 1850 ppm can only fill a maximum of 4.086L of space at standard amb

、ient conditions, after which the CO will diffuse into a larger volume and becomeless concentrated. Next, we will determine whether this CO gas test kit exceeds the defined maximumnumber of moles.Because 1 mole of gas at STP will occupy a specific volume, regardless of the molecular weight of thegas,

、 we can use the following formula (Equation 2) to determine the volume fraction of the CO withrespect to the overall CO/balance gas mixture volume at STP:Equation 2: ppm (CO) = (Volume of CO at STP) / (Total Gas Volume at STP) x 1061850 ppm = (Volume of CO) / (4.086 L) x 106Therefore, the Volume of

、the CO at STP is 0.007559 LNext, calculate the number of moles of CO, using the Ideal Gas Law (Equation 3).Equation 3: PV = nRT (Ideal Gas Law)in which:P = Pressure of the CO (Standard Ambient Pressure: 101.325 kPa)V = Volume of the CO in Ln = number of molesSEPTEMBER 4, 2008SUBJECT 2075A6UL COPYRIG
