、ces to replaceexisting panels, to reduce the firebox size or to allow for reduced clearance to combustible construction.1.2 The panels shall be installed within masonry fireplaces which are constructed in accordance with theStandard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances,
、 NFPA 211 and theInternational Residential Code, IRC.2 Components2.1 Except as indicated in 2.2, a component of a product covered by this outline shall comply with therequirements for that component.2.2 A component need not comply with a specific requirement that:a) Involves a feature or characteris
、tic not needed in the application of the component in thevalue covered by this outline, orb) Is superseded by a requirement in this outline.2.3 A component shall be used in accordance with its rating established for the intended conditions ofuse.2.4 Specific components are incomplete in construction
、 features or restricted in performance capabilities.Such components are intended for use only under limited conditions, such as certain temperatures notexceeding specified limits, and shall be used only under those specific conditions.3 Units of Measurement3.1 Values stated without parentheses are t

、CHIMNEY A field constructed chimney of solid masonry units, bricks, stones, orreinforced - portland-cement concrete, which may or may not be lined with chimney flue liners built inaccordance with applicable building code requirements.5.4 MASONRY FIREPLACE A field-constructed assembly constructed in
、accordance with theStandard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel Burning Appliances, NFPA 211, and inaccordance with codes such as the International Residential Code and the Uniform Mechanical Code.5.5 QUALIFIED PERSON A trained installer who has successfully completed a thorough, company
、-sponsored training course and who is familiar with the use of the product and the risks associated withimproper installation procedures.5.6 REFRACTORY PANEL A noncombustible material used in the construction of the fireplace to linethe firebox.CONSTRUCTION6 Materials6.1 Parts used as refractory pan
、els shall be of noncombustible material.PERFORMANCE7 General7.1 After being subjected to the tests specified in Sections 10 12, as applicable, the refractory panelsshall be capable of being further used. The panels shall be free of cracks, distortion, or other damage. The panels are to be visually in
、spected to determine that damage has not occurred.7.2 Test results indicating compliance with the requirements in 7.1 include the following:a) No part of the product has become damaged or permanently distorted to an extent that thepanel will not continue to function as intended; andb) A refractory p
、anel material has not cracked in a manner allowing portions of the panel tobecome dislodged by poking the panel with a sharp instrument.APRIL 15, 2005 SUBJECT 2506 5UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL7.3 A refractory panel shall c
、omply with the following:a) The thermal conductivity of the refractory panel shall not be increased; andb) The refractory panel material shall not show evidence of softening, melting, disintegrating, losing binder, or other malfunction or deterioration.8 Test Installation8.1 The following factors are
、 to form the basis of the performance tests of a product:a) Size and type of refractory panel;b) Type of panel construction and material; andc) Samples of refractory panels shall be representative of the material manufacturers curingand mixing specifications and thickness.8.2 Refractory panels are t

、ace.8.3 A refractory panel incorporating water in a cementitious mixture is to be cured for not less than 20days (or manufacturers recommended curing time) after installation, prior to conducting the temperaturetests. If a specific curing method is specified by the manufacturer, this is to be follow
、ed as far as it ispractical.8.4 The test fireplace and chimney shall be constructed in accordance with the Test Installation Sectionof the Standard for Fireplace Accessories, UL 907. Construction and masonry units of the test fireplacefirebox area are to be according to the minimum requirements spec
、ified by the refractory panelmanufacturer. See 15.1(f).8.5 The test structure is to be erected within a room having ventilation capable of maintaining the buildupof carbon monoxide to less than 50 parts per million throughout the period of any tests. The room is to befree of extraneous drafts and th
、e chimney and liner are to exhaust into the same space or into a spacefreely communicating with the space from which the combustion air is taken. The room is to be such thatduring any one test the room temperature does not increase by more than 20F (11C) above the roomtemperature recorded at the beg
