If released to the atmosphere, landfill gas may pose hazards or a nuisance to humans, fauna and flora and cause damage to
23、buildings and technical facili-ties. Due to the high global warming potential of methane, landfill gas is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. In Germany, statutory regulations requiring the reduction and prevention of gas emissions from landfill sites have been in place since the beginn
24、ing of the 1990s. Where significant gas production occurs at landfill sites, the landfill gas must be collected and treated, recovering its energy content to the extent practicable. In practice, landfill sites with high gas production rates predominantly use combustion engine plants for electricity
25、generation. Where energy recovery is not feasible, the extract-ed landfill gas is disposed of via high-temperature flares. Since June 2005, landfilling of biodegradable waste has been severely restricted in Germany so that waste deposited after that time makes only a minor contribution to landfill g

Gas production at German land-fills sites stems exclusively from older waste de-posits and is therefore declining as the biological decomposition of the waste progresse

Against this background, technologies that also allow the treatment of low-volume low-methane landfill gas streams have been developed by several companies over the past few years. The series of stand-ards VDI 3899 summarises the current state of the art of landfill gas collection, utilisation and treat-ment. According to calculations of
40、 the German Federal Environmental Agency published in the NIR 2012 1, methane emissions from landfill sites have been reduced from 1,7 million tons in 1990 to 0,4 million tons in 2010 through the construction of landfill gas collection systems and the imple-mentation of a landfill ban on biodegradab

With this emission reduction of 27 million tpa of CO2equivalents accounting for approximately 3 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany in 1990, the waste management sector is already making a major contribution to climate protection. According to the NIR 2012, biological decomp

It will still take several decades before these biological de-composition processes and the resulting methane
