、alogue Commission Electrotechnique Internationale International Electrotechnical Commission 2 TS 62318 IEC:2003(E) INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION _ MULTIMEDIA SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT MULTIMEDIA HOME SERVER SYSTEMS HOME SERVER CONCEPTUAL MODEL FOREWORD 1) The IEC (International Electrotechni

、cal Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this e

、nd and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organi

、zations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on tech

、nical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested National Committees. 3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published i

、n the form of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense. 4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International Standards transparently to the maximum extent

、possible in their national and regional standards. Any divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any equipm

、ent declared to be in conformity with one of its standards. 6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this technical specification may be the subject of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. The main task of IE

、C technical committees is to prepare International Standards. In exceptional circumstances, a technical committee may propose the publication of a technical specification when the required support cannot be obtained for the publication of an International Standard, despite repeated efforts, or the s

、ubject is still under technical development or where, for any other reason, there is the future but no immediate possibility of an agreement on an International Standard. Technical specifications are subject to review within three years of publication to decide whether they can be transformed into I

、nternational Standards. IEC 62318, which is a technical specification, has been prepared by IEC technical committee 100: Audio, video and multimedia systems and equipment The text of this technical specification is based on the following documents: Enquiry draft Report on voting 100/575A/DTS 100/679

、/RVC Full information on the voting for the approval of this technical specification can be found in the report on voting indicated in the above table. This publication has been drafted in accordance with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.TS 62318 IEC:2003(E) 3 The committee has decided that the conten

A bilingual edition may be issued at a later date. 4 TS 62318 IEC:2003(E) INTRODUCTION Broadcasters, network providers and consumer

、electronics companies have their own home server models, that are different from each other. In order to start a discussion on standardization of home server technology, a home server conceptual model should be established. The model should include all the server logical elements and the functionali

、model for multimedia home server systems. A home server conceptual model is specified from the standardization point of view to clarify the functionality and modularity of existing and future home servers. The model provides key technology of home servers to be standardized. It should be noted that

、the modelling is not intended for actual implementation of home servers. The modelling is expected to be a reference for discussing and developing new works of home server standardization, and to contribute to ease of operation and connectivity of home servers. The model is dealt with as an instance

、 of the equipment structure model defined in IEC 61998. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (inclu

、program-interface. A home server must contain at least one head-end element, one inhouse-network-interface element, and the functional-module element(s), which support those interfaces and high- capacity storage functionality. The home server may contain more than one of those elements and other ele

The element supports protocols for corresponding networking media. 6.3 Inhouse-network-interface An inhouse-network-interface element interfaces with inhouse distributed equipment via local- area-network, home-bus, PC-interface, video-interface, or other interfacing media. 6.

、4 Interchangeable-storage-media-port An interchangeable-storage-media-port element supports a logical functionality of information interchange via interchangeable storage media such as nonsequential-media (for example DVD) and sequential-media (for example Digital Video Tape). 6.5 User-interface Thr

、ough a user-interface element, all the communication between the home server and its user are carried out and home server operations are controlled by the user. 6.6 Functional module All the functions and operations of head-end, inhouse network interface, interchangeable- storage-media-port and user

、interface modules are controlled by the corresponding functional modules. In addition there are functional modules that control high-capacity storage, content data and user-assist functionalities: high-capacity storage control module, content control module and user-assist module. There may be othe

、r functional modules. The content control module may consist of submodules, such as coding, decoding, content- managing, security-managing and content-editing submodules. The other functional modules may also be split up into submodules. 6.7 Application program interface Some application programs ca

The API contains a module for each functional module. 7 Issues to be standardized Functions and specifications of head-end and inhouse-network-interface elemen

NOTE 2 How to standardize API was discussed in JTC1 (see ISO/IEC JTC1 N2319). 7.5 Documentation User manuals, service manuals and other documentation for home servers should be written with standardized names for the functions, their attributes and

、 attribute values, for example a) name of function; subtitle overwrite; b) attributes/values: character code/euc-jp, position/bottom, typeface/times-new-roman. Such standardization enables users to understand the capabilities of their home server and avoid irregal user operations. 10 TS 62318 IEC:20
