Overview1.1 ScopeThis standard deg192nes a signaling method for asynchronous, fully interlocked, bid

A functional subset of the signaling method maybe implemented on personal computers (PCs) or equivalent parallel port hardware with new software. Thisstandard recommends new electrical interfaces, cabling, and inter

34、face hardware that provides improved per-formance while retaining backward compatibility with this subset.This standard also specig192es a format for a peripheral identig192cation string and a method of returning thisstring to the host outside of the bidirectional data stream.1.2 PurposeThis standar

35、d was created because there existed no deg192ned standard for bidirectional parallel communica-tions between personal computers and printing peripherals. Pre-existing methods utilized a wide variety ofhardware and software products, each with unique and incompatible signaling schemes. This standard

36、wasdeveloped to provide an open path for communications between computers and more intelligent printers andperipherals. The availability of a standard bidirectional protocol will encourage the development of newperipherals that return signig192cant data, as well as basic status, to the host.IEEEStd

Deg192nitions3.1 General terminologyThe following terms are used in this standard and/or may be used in conjunction with the signaling methodsdeg192ned in this standard. The deg192nitions are not intended to be absolute, but they do reg193ect the use

39、 of theterms in this standard. 3.1.1 bidirectional operation:When the peripheral and host communicate using both forward and reversedata channels. As deg192ned in this standard, Nibble and Byte Modes provide reverse channel communicationand are used in conjunction with Compatibility Mode to provide

40、bidirectional operation. Extended Capabili-ties Port (ECP) and Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) Modes support bidirectional communication. 3.1.2 Centronics:The popular name for the parallel printer port used as the parallel interface for most print-ers and supported by most “MS-DOS compatible” PCs. The

41、name is derived from the printer manufacturerthat introduced this interface, Centronics Data Computer Corporation. Despite a basic similarity, many vari-ations of this interface have been implemented in different peripherals and hosts. This specig192cation describesthe more prevalent variations of t

42、he “Centronics” interface and deg192nes a family of signaling methods that arebackward compatible with the typical “Centronics” interface. 3.1.3 Centronics connector:The popular name for the 36-pin ribbon contact type connector commonlyused for the parallel port on printers. This connector is referr

43、ed to as the “IEEE 1284-B” connector in thisstandard.3.1.4 command set:A g192eld in the Device ID message identifying the type of data expected by the periph-eral. For example, a printer might use this g192eld to report which page description language(s) it supports. 3.1.5 compatible device:A device

44、 that supports any of a specig192ed range of popular variants of the“Centronics” interface. Compatible devices will interoperate with compliant devices in Compatibility Modeonly.3.1.6 compliant device:A device that supports either the Level 1 or Level 2 electrical interface, plusCompatible and Nibbl

45、e Mode operation, as well as the negotiation phases necessary to transition betweenthese two modes.3.1.7 device driver:A program that runs on the host and manages the sending and receiving of informationfrom the peripheral. The driver utilizes the link level interface deg192ned in this standard to c

46、ommunicate databetween the application program and the peripheral personality.3.1.8 Device ID:A structured, variable length ASCII message identifying the manufacturer, command set,and model of the peripheral. Additional information may also be included. The message is provided by the1IEC publication
