4、oductionThis application guide was developed to assist the users of IEEE Std C62.36TM-2000. The surge protectorscovered are multiple-component series or parallel combinations of linear or nonlinear elements packaged forthe purpose of limiting surge voltages, currents, or both. Some tests are not sui

5、table for all surge protectors as the test methods and criteria given apply to surgeprotectors with different functions and environmental performance. This guide will help manufacturers andusers to decide which tests apply to a surge protector intended for a specific application and how to set upand

6、 run those tests.The need for this application guide originated because of the following industry trends: A loss of expertise in protection of equipment connected to data, communications, or signalingcircuits Decreasing awareness of the historical data and rationale on which standards have been base

7、d Increased use of sensitive electronic circuits that require surge protectionThis substantially revised edition of the application guide now includes informative annexes coveringapplications as well as updated descriptions of protective devices. In addition, this revision comprehends thechanges mad

8、e to C62.36 in the 2000 edition. General theory of operationThis clause provides the description and theory of operation of surge protectors (also called surge-protectivedevices) used in low-voltage data, communications, and signaling circuits. Th

45、ese protectors comprise one ormore series or parallel elements that limit excessive voltages, currents, or both, while maintaining thesystem operation to a given performance level.These devices are used on electronic equipment where voltage and current surges on the signal line cancause system malfu

46、nction or failure. The devices have two distinct states: In the quiescent state, they areessentially transparent to the system; in the operated state, they provide voltage limiting, current limiting, orboth. The devices are operated or self-triggered by the voltage or current surge and may also self

47、-reset totheir quiescent state. Multiple-component surge protectors may contain voltage-limiting devices, which are connected in parallelwith the terminals to be protected. They may also contain current-limiting devices in series with theterminals to be protected. Descriptions and theory of operatio

48、n of certain voltage-limiting devices that maybe used in multiple-component surge protectors can be found in IEEE Std C62.42-1992 and inIEEE Std C62.37-1997. Multiple-component protectors mayuse voltage limiters that are not covered in IEEE Std C62.42-1992 and IEEE Std C62.37-1997, they may usecurrent limiters that are not covered in Annex A, or both.Numerous combinations of series and parallel components can be contained in surge protectors, and acomprehensive characterization is too complex to describe completely in this guide.
