5、Significance and Use3.1 This document is intended to provide guidance andclarification to designers, specifiers, inspectors, testingagencies, producers, and users in specifying and evaluatingmasonry mortar.3.2 Users of documents Specification C270 and TestMethod C780 often confuse and sometimes inad
6、vertentlymisuse parts of the two documents when specifying or evalu-ating masonry mortar. This guide seeks to address specificitems within Specification C270 and Test Method C780 to helppromote their proper use and interpretation.4. Specifying Masonry Mortar4.1 Use Specification C270 to specify maso

If neither Proportion or PropertySpecification C270 are specified, the Proportion specificationshall govern, unless data are presented to and accepted by thespecifier to show that the mortar meets the proper

9、ar specified. This procedure ofspecifying mortar requires no sampling and testing of mortar, and hence, no measurement of mortar properties in the labo-ratory or the field is required. All that is necessary is fieldconfirmation of the proper proportions of the mixes used inconstruction.4.3 Property S
10、pecificationsThese Specifications requiretesting of laboratory-prepared mortar for compliance with therequirements of Table 2, Property Specifications, of Specifica-tion C270 for the Type of mortar specified.4.3.1 The Property Specifications require evaluation of amortar with a consistency (flow) of
11、 110 6 5 %. This is anarbitrarily established mortar consistency that is used toapproximate the water content of mortar after it is placed in amasonry assemblage with absorbent masonry units. Theamount of water required in mortar produced at the construc-tion site is normally greater than the amount

Due to the higher amount of water necessary foractual masonry construction, mortar produced and sampled inthe fie

Compliance is typi-cally verified by submission of a letter of certification or testreport for each mortar material.NOTE 1If any of the materials used do not comply with the materialrequirements of Specification C270, the Propor

Specification C270 specifically permits the use of masonry sandsthat do not comply with the gradation requirements of Specification C144provided that the Property Specifications of Specification C270 are usedrather than the Proportion Specifications.5.2 Property S

By measuring the mortar aggregate ratio, theproportion of cementitious materi

Construction site masonrymortar strengths are not generally equal to the values cited inthe Property Specifications Requirements Table of Specifica-tion C270 due to the difference between water contents of field-and laboratory-produced mortars. Furthermore, mort

Even whenthis is done, the field compressive strength data can only becompared to the preconstruction mortar strength data ingeneral, due to ot

Preconstruction and Construction Evaluation ofMortar Properties6.1 Use Test Method C780 to evaluate mortar properties ofa mortar mixed to a field consistency.6.2 Annex A1 and
30、A3 of Test Method C780 are used tomeasure consistency (sometimes called plasticity or flow).Annex A6 is used to measure air content. Annex A7 is used tomeasure compressive strength.NOTE 2The consistency of mortar at a construction site should beadjusted to provide optimum workability that is compati
