ThispartofISO/IEC1539definestheinterfaceandsemanticsforamodulethatprovidesfacilitiesforthe manipulationofcharacterstringsofarbitraryanddynamicallyvariablelength.AnnexAreferstoapossible implement

24、ation,inFortran95,ofamodulethatconformstothispartofISO/IEC1539.Itshouldbenoted, however,thatthisispurelyforpurposesofdemonstratingthefeasibilityandportabilityofthisstandard.The actualcodeisnotintendedinanywaytoprescribethemethodofimplementation,noristhereanyimplication thatthisisinanywayanoptimalpor

26、rdweretheintroductionofpureandelementalprocedures.Sincepureandelementalfunctionscanbe usedinspecificationexpressions,theirintroductioninthisstandardenhancestheusabilityofthestandardfor theenduser.Theabilitytodefinemanyofthefunctionsspecifiedinthisstandardtobeelementalimprovesthe compatibilityofthesefunctionswithsimilarintrinsicfunctionsdefinedbythemainstandard.
