This specification covers 11 grades of polymer-modified cationic and anionic emulsified asphalt for use in pavement construction in the manner designated. The modifier may be either a soli

3、d or a latex polymer. The modifier may be added either to the asphalt binder or emulsifier solution prior to the emulsification process. REQUIREMENTS 3.1. Upon receipt, refer to T 59 for the proper protocol for cond

6、itioning the emulsified asphalt prior to mixing and testing. The emulsified asphalt should appear to be homogeneous after thorough mixing. Complete testing of sample for emulsified asphalt properties within 14 days of the sample date. Complete testing for emulsified asphalt residue properties within

7、 30 days of the sample date. Note 2Dilution of the emulsified asphalt to aid in the field application of the material should not occur without approval of the buyer. 3.1.1. If the emulsified asphalt appears to be inhomogeneous after reconditioning and mixing according to T 59, discard and resample f

8、or testing if required by the buyer. Note 3When emulsified asphalts (in particular, rapid-setting grades) are held in containers at ambient temperature for an extended period, emulsified asphalt droplets can coalesce, leading to unrepresentative changes in emulsified asphalt liquid properties. 10、homogeneity of the sample even after careful reheating and mixing upon receipt. 3.1.2. If the sample was subjected to freeze-thaw cycling prior to receipt, discard and resample for testing. If the emulsified asphalt was frozen at any time before testing, results for emulsified asphalt liquid propert

11、ies such as viscosity, sieve, and settlement will be invalid. Note 4Emulsified asphalt residue properties can also be affected when the liquid emulsified asphalt to be recovered shows signs of inhomogeneity or has been subjected to freeze-thaw cycling. Note 5If the emulsified asphalt appears inhomog

12、eneous or is suspected of having been subjected to freeze-thaw cycling prior to testing and a second, representative sample cannot be obtained, actual emulsified asphalt performance at time of construction should be reviewed. If sample integrity issues persist, consider deploying R 77 so that liquid

13、 emulsified asphalt samples are taken directly from heated storage tanks and are evaluated soon after cooling directly to the required test temperature. 3.2. Emulsified asphalt shall conform to the requirements in Tables 1, 2, or 3 for the type and grade specified. 3.3. By certification of complianc

14、e, the minimum polymer solids by percent mass of residual asphalt content shall be 2.5 percent for Table 1 grades and 3.0 percent for Table 2 grades. Take samples of emulsified asphalt in accordance with R 66. 4.2. Store samples in clean, airtight, sealed plastic containers at a temperature of not

29、less than 4C (39F) until tested. 5. METHODS OF TEST 5.1. Determine the properties of the emulsified asphalts given in Tables 1, 2, and 3 in accordance with T 59. Determine the properties of the emulsified asphalt residue in accordance with T 49, T 50, T 53, T 111, or T 301 as appropriate. Note 6The

30、distillation testing temperature is typically lower for polymer-modified emulsified asphalts than M 140 or M 208 emulsified asphalts (see T 59). 5.1.1. Residue by DistillationThe material from some polymer-asphalt systems may not be smooth after residue recovery. If this occurs, stir the material we

31、ll to homogenize the residue as much as possible per T 59, and continue with testing the required residual properties. 5.1.2. Residue by EvaporationThis method may be used as an alternate to distillation to prepare the emulsified asphalt residue for testing in accordance with T 59, if approved by th

32、e owner. Properties of the residue from the evaporation procedure may also differ from the specifications shown, if approved by the owner. The same method to prepare the residue (either evaporation or distillation) must be used when comparing test results from the residue. 6. KEYWORDS 6.1.
