15、ribes a system for the unique identification of nuclear fuel assemblies. This uniqueness is achieved by the assignment of the following to each fuel assembly: 1) a fabricator or facility identification prefix, and 2) a serial number. Although the standard was developed primarily for commercial light

16、-water reactor fuel, it may be used for any reactor fuel contained in discrete fuel assemblies that can be identified with a serial number as specified by the standard. The standard was originally developed to meet a need of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commis sion, now the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commiss

17、ion, for its Safeguards Program. Reporting and recordkeeping are necessary parts of this program. Because of the large volume of fuel needed to support commercial power reactors, a systematic method of fuel assembly identification is necessary to ensure that no two fuel assemblies manufactured in th

18、e United States have the same number; the reactor fuel can thus be accurately and expeditiously recorded. This standard provides such an identification system. Fuel Assembly Identification Numbering System 3.1 Composition. Fuel assembly identifica tion shall be pro

21、vided through a six-character numbering system consisting of a prefix of two alphabetic characters, which identify the indi vidual fabrication facility, followed by a serial number consisting of four alphanumeric char acters. Definition and specification of the char acters are given in 3.1.1 through

22、 3.1.4 below. 3.1.1 Fabrication Facility Identification. The alphabetic characters for identification of the fabrication facility shall consist of the first two characters of the three-character code as signed to each fabrication facility by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).l 3.

23、1.2 Serial Number. The combinations of four characters used for serial numbers shall be assigned without repetition to individual fuel assemblies by the fuel fabricator. The serial number shall be comprised of the characters specified in 3.1.3 and should be assigned in the sequence specified in 3.1.

24、4. 3.1.3 Serial Number Characters. The characters used for fuel assembly serial num bers shall be selected from the Arabic numerals o through 9 and letters of the English alphabet, except B, F, I, 0, Q, and Z; this provides 30 different characters. 3.1.4 Serial Number Sequence. The character combina

25、tions in the serial numbers should be assigned to fuel assemblies by the fuel fabricator using a base-30 numeri cal system. The numerical order of the 30 characters used in the base is the numerals from 0 through 9, followed by the letters defined in 3.1.3 as normally ordered from A through Y. The n

26、umber sequence in the base-30 numerical system is illustrated in tabular form in the Appendix for clarification and guidance. Pro gressing from 0000 through YYYY provides 810,000 combinations of characters for each fabrication facility. 3.2 Style of Characters. The style of char acters used for the

28、 capital letters, and numerals.2 The size and spacing of characters shall be as set forth in 3.4. 3.3 Method of Attachment. The identifi cation number shall be provided on the upper end fitting, nozzle, or other integral part of the fuel assembly. The number shall be provided by either casting, mach

29、ining, engraving, or using similar methods of marking, and shall appear either directly on the part or on a plate attached to the part by a metallurgical bond. The identification number shall not be provided on a plate or tag fastened to the assembly by a mechanical means. 3.4 Size and Location. The

30、 complete six character identification number shall be of uniform size and shall be provided at one principal location on each fuel assembly. The principal location and size of characters used shall be agreed upon by the fuel fabricator and the user, and shall provide readily accessible and legible

31、identification throughout the as semblys lifetime, consistent with the viewing system at the users facility. Other identification markings, such as those required for fabricator quality control or those provided for the users convenience, may be used; to avoid confusion, however, these ad ditional m

32、arkings shall not be located in the vicinity of the principal identification. 3.5 Arrangement. The characters in the identification number shall be arranged in line to read from left to right or from top to bottom when viewed in normal orientation, as indi cated below: EA12C5 or E A 1 2 C 5 In cases

33、 where sufficient surface area is not available to provide a complete uninterrupted set of characters, the characters may be grouped by separation of the fuel fabricators prefix from the serial number. This shall be the only permissible method of grouping. In cases of grouping, a hyphen shall not be

34、 introduced between the two groups, and the characters shall be maintained in a line, as shown below: EA 12C5 or E A 1 2 C 5 4. Fuel Rod Location Identification System In order to minimize possible confusion in the description of fuel rod location within an as sembly, a matrix system consisting of a

35、 refer ence location and an x and y coordinate system shall be used to identify fuel rod locations. The coordinate system shall utilize sequential Ara bic numerals beginning with Ion one axis, and letters of the English alphabet beginning with A on the other axis. The location of any rod can then be

36、 designated by its x-y coordinates from the reference location. The x-y coordi nates do not have to be affixed to the assembly. 5. Responsibilities 5.1 Documentation. The fuel fabricator shall provide to the user fuel assembly information as required to show location, size, and configu ration of ide

37、ntification numbers provided on all fuel assemblies supplied to the user. 5.2 Fabricator Records. The fuel fabricator shall be responsible for maintaining records of assigned fuel assembly identification numbers and shall assure that the numbers assigned will not be duplicated. The fabricator shall

38、maintain records which relate rod location within individual assemblies to rod identifi cation numbers. 5.3 Viewing Capability. 39、Y14.2-M-1992. 2 is to be reprocessed), shall, at their respective faciHties, provide viewing capability suitable for the determination of the identification of both irradiated and unirradiated fuel assem blies, as applicable. 42、followed by each of the pairs shown in the Table, which is to be read from left to right and from top to bottom. The first combination is 0000 and is followed by 0001. After 0009 comes OOOA. After OOOY comes 0010. The last combination of the first 900 is OOYY. The next 900 character combinations are

43、 obtained from the pair 01 followed by each of the pairs shown in the Table. The rest of the combinations are obtained from each pair from the Table followed by another pair from the Table.
