Purpose1.1 P

8、urpose. The purpose of this guideline is to establishassignment for Refrigerant container colors; definitions;basic considerations for developing the color guideline; andassignment criteria.1.1.1 Intent. This guideline is intended for theguidance of the industry, including manufacturers,engineers, i

9、nstallers, contractors and users.1.1.2 Review and Amendment. This guideline issubject to review and amendment as technologyadvances.Section 2. Scope2.1 Scope. This guideline provides a means by whichcolors can be assigned to Refrigerant containers forRefrigerants currently in use or newly developedR

10、efrigerants, provided the Refrigerant is used in significantquantities as defined in this guideline. Colors should not berelied upon exclusively to determine the type of Refrigerantin the container.This guideline also recommends a container color forRefrigerants that are not produced in sufficient q

11、uantities toqualify for their own individual color.2.2 Exclusions. This guideline does not cover containercolors for recovered and recycled Refrigerants, which arecovered in ARI Guideline K, Containers for RecoveredFluorocarbon Refrigerants.Section 3. DefinitionsAll terms in this document follow the

12、 standard industrydefinitions in the current edition of ASHRAE Terminologyof Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigerationunless otherwise defined in this section.3.1 Refrigerants. Refrigerants for purposes of thisguideline include single component refrigerants, zeotropesand azeotropes.3

13、1.1 Flammable Refrigerants. ThoseRefrigerants that receive a flammability rating of 2 or3 in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 34 with Addenda.3.1.2 “High Pressure” Refrigerants. ThoseRefrigerants meeting the definition of a “compressedgas”. The gas should have a minimum cylinderservice pressure exceeding 500 p

14、sig 3000 kPa.3.1.3 Liquid Refrigerants. Those Refrigerantswith a normal boiling point greater than 68F 20C.These products normally are packaged in drums.3.1.4 “Low Pressure” Refrigerants. ThoseRefrigerants meeting the definition of a “compressedgas”. The gas should have a minimum cylinderservice pre

15、ssure not exceeding 500 psig 3000 kPa.3.2 “Should.“ “Should“ is used to indicate provisionswhich are not mandatory but which are desirable as goodpractice.Section 4. Basic Considerationsfor Developing the Color Guideline4.1 The color guideline is not a substitute for readingcylinder labels and marki

16、ngs.4.2 Refrigerants are grouped in four classes in order tocreate more color opportunities within readily identifiablecontainer styles and to clearly differentiate flammableRefrigerants.Class I: Liquid Refrigerants.Class II: “Low Pressure“ Refrigerants.Class III: “High Pressure“ Refrigerants.Class

17、IV: Flammable Refrigerants.4.3 The color guideline should allow for the addition ofnew Refrigerants in each of the above classes.4.4 Color codes only need to be differentiated within aclass. Consideration should be given to the applicationbefore assigning colors to the Refrigerant.4.5 Colors should

18、be distinguishable from each other.4.6 The color guideline should be standard industry-wide.4.7 Color option should minimize container paintingcosts.4.8 A red band on the shoulder or top of the containershould designate flammable compounds, or mixtures thatcould become flammable in the event of a le

Assignment Criteria5.1 The Refrigerant manufacturer should notify ARI of itsintent to use a color not previously assigned for thatRefrigerant class to a new Refrigerant they plan tocommercialize within six (6) months.5.2 In order to retain assignmen

29、t of the color, themanufacturer should furnish confirmation to ARI that:5.2.1 A Refrigerant number has been published inANSI/ASHRAE Standard 34 or Addenda.5.2.2 There have been commercial sales and willbe continued offering of the Refrigerant within oneyear of assignment.5.2.3 There have been commer

30、cial sales of at least100,000 lbs. 45,360 kg per year for Class I andClass II Refrigerants or 2,000 lbs. 907.2 kg per yearfor Class III Refrigerants within 2 years ofassignment. Commercial sales of Class IVRefrigerants should be consistent with commercialvolumes which would be required if it were a

31、non-flammable Refrigerant.5.3 If the manufacturer who originally requested andobtained the use of a color falls below the levels establishedin 5.2, that manufacturer should notify ARI. At that point,ARI will survey all manufacturers to determine whether acomposite volume of all the manufacturers sup

32、portscontinued use of the color and meets the criteria in 5.2. Ifnot, the color should be provisionally returned to the colorpool with a five year period allowed for clearing existinginventories.5.4 In the case where a color has been provisionallyreturned to the color pool, the manufacturer should p

33、ackagenew production in a generic Refrigerant color using a labelto indicate the previously assigned color.5.4.1 In the event a color is provisionally returnedto the color pool, ARI will notify all ARI membercompanies and then disseminate that information tothe “trade press“ through an ARI press rel

34、ease andother appropriate measures.5.4.2 When a color has been provisionallyreturned to the color pool, notification has beenmade, and if the total sales volume falls below thecriteria established in 5.2.3, then the color by vote ofARI will be returned to the pool of unassigned colors.Copyright Air-
