Type I is an un-faced insulation blanket.Type II is a T

17、ype I blanket that is post-processed by alaminating process that applies an adhesive bonded facing toone surface.4.3 Flexible fibrous glass insulation for metal buildingsshall be tested in accordance with the specimen preparation andmounting procedures described in this practice, using TestMethod E8

18、4.5. Significance and Use5.1 Flexible fibrous glass insulation for metal buildings isevaluated in accordance with Test Method E84 to comply withbuilding code requirements. This practice describes, in detail,specimen mounting procedures for Type I and Type II metalbuilding insulation materials.5.2 Th

19、e material to be tested shall be representative of theglass fiber blanket, facing and bonding adhesive used in actualfield installations.5.3 The limitations for this procedure are those associatedwith Test Method E84.6. Specimen Preparation and Mounting6.1 Test specimens shall consist of 24.5 6 0.5

20、ft (7.47 60.152 m) continuous, unbroken lengths or broken, buttedend-to-end lengths of the blanket insulation. The width shall bebetween 20 and 24 in. (0.50 and 0.60 m) with a thicknessbetween 2.0 and 4.0 in. (50 and 100 mm).6.2 The specimens shall be supported by nominally straightmetal rods insert

21、ed through the material and positioned suchthat the bottom of the rod is approximately14 in. (6.3 mm)from the surface to be exposed to the flame. The steel rods shallbe14 in. (6.3 mm) diameter, span the width of the tunnel andbe spaced at approximately 2 ft (0.6 m) intervals down thelength of the tu

22、nnel, including a rod at each end of thespecimen.6.2.1 When testing butted end-to-end, each test specimenshall have a rod inserted 3 in. (76 mm) from each butted end,and evenly spaced rods shall be added to the section tomaintain the test specimen in a relatively flat position.6.3 For Type I materia

23、ls, the un-faced surface shall be thesurface exposed to the flame.6.4 For Type II materials, the faced surface shall be thesurface exposed to the flame.6.4.1 For Type II material, a minimum of two specimensshall be tested. One specimen shall be tested with a longitudi-nal slit down the length of the

24、 sample oriented between theburners. The slit is to be of such depth as to expose the bondingadhesive and glass fiber insulation. The other specimen shall betested with the facing without a slit.6.5 When lowering the tunnel lid, care shall be taken toachieve contact with the specimen but to not comp

25、ress thespecimen unduly.7. Testing of Specimens7.1 All testing shall be conducted using the proceduredescribed in Test Method E84.8. Operator Safety8.1 The primary concerns for operator safety are associatedwith the fire-test-response procedure, which is described inTest Method E84, and not with the

26、 specimen preparationprocedure. Safety recommendations are included in TestMethod E84.9. Report9.1 Report the following within the Test Method E84 testreport:9.1.1 A detailed description of the specimen being tested.9.1.2 The specific mounting procedure used.9.1.3 Which specimens were tested with th

27、e facing slit andwhich ones were tested with the facing without a slit.9.1.4 All observations, graphical results, and the values ofthe flame spread index and of the smoke developed index ineach test.10. COMMENTARYX1.1 IntroductionIt has been shown that the carefulreplication of realistic fire scenarios is the most appropriatemeans of fire testing of products and systems. However, this isnot always achievable within the confines of a stan

29、dard testmethod.X1.2 The use of any standard fire test method intrinsicallycarries some limitations, including the source of heat or flame,the specimen size and orientation, the specimen location andthe fire-test-response characteristics measured.X1.3 Fire tests on flexible fibrous glass insulation

30、for metalbuildings are often conducted by using Test Method E84.E2988 172X1.3.1 The source of heat and flame in Test Method E84 aretwo gas burners supplying approximately 300 000 BTU/h (87.9kW) onto the test specimen from underneath for a period of 10min.X1.3.2 The approximate specimen sizes in Test

31、 Method E84are 24 ft (7.3 m) long by 20 to 24 in. (508 to 610 mm) wide.the recommended specimen thickness height is up to 4 in. (102mm).X1.3.3 The test specimen is placed below the lid of the testchamber at a specified location.ASTM International takes no position respecting the validity of any pate
