3、quipment andfitness facilities. Its goal is to help alert and remind users of safe practices in utilizing fitnessequipment. Like any other physical activity, exercise involving fitness equipment presents a potentialfor injury. No label or sign alone can prevent all injuries, especially when fitness
4、equipment is usedimproperly. The ultimate responsibility for preventing injury lies with the equipment owner orequipment user, or both. This specification, however, intends to promote proper fitness equipmentpractices through standardization of signage and label requirements.1. Scope1.1 This specifi
5、cation establishes requirements for safetysignage and labels for fitness equipment as defined in 3.1.3 andfitness facilities as defined in 3.1.4. It provides for the design,placement, and minimum wording required.1.2 It is the intent of this specification to set guidelines forwarnings and signage to

7、erminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 consumer fitness equipment, nfitness equipment in-tended for use by one person or one family unit.3.1.2 control panel, nthe console on fitness equipmentwhere the user chooses/enters an exercise routine, resistancelevel, or otherwise interacts with the machine settings

Label and Sign Classifications4.1 Hazard ClassificationProduct safety signs and labelsshall be classified according to the relative seriousness of thepote
20、ntial hazards. The classifications shall be noted by thesignal words DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION. Fitnessfacility signs are classified as general safety signs and shall usesignal words such as safety first, be careful and think.4.1.1 DANGERIndicates an imminently hazardous situa-tion which, if not
21、avoided, will result in death or serious injury.This signal word is to be limited to the most extreme situations.4.1.2 WARNINGIndicates a potentially hazardoussituation, which, if not avoided, could result in death or seriousinjury.4.1.3 CAUTIONIndicates a potentially hazardoussituation, which, if n
22、ot avoided, may result in minor ormoderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafepractices.4.2 Signal Word Panel ColorThe signal word panel colorshall comply with ANSI Z535.1 as follows:4.2.1 DANGERThe signal word DANGER shall be inwhite letters on a safety red background. The PMS color
23、 for thebackground shall be Pantone 179C.4.2.2 WARNINGThe signal word WARNING shall be inblack letters on a safety orange background. The PMS color forthe background shall be Pantone 152C.4.2.3 CAUTIONThe signal word CAUTION shall be inblack letters on a safety yellow background. The PMS color forth
24、e background shall be Pantone 108C.4.2.4 General Safety Sign Signal Word(s)The signalword(s) for this type of sign or label shall be in white letters ona safety green background. The PMS color for the backgroundshall be Pantone 3415C.4.3 Multiple Hazard Identification:4.3.1 One Sign or LabelWhen mor
25、e than one hazardsituation exists in close proximity to one another, they may beaddressed on the same label or sign providing that theinformation for each hazard is presented effectively.4.3.2 Level of SeriousnessWhen multiple hazards areaddressed on one label, the hazard with the greatest level ofs
26、everity shall be addressed first. The remaining hazards shall bepresented in order according to their relative levels of severity.5. Label Design5.1 General Warning Label:5.1.1 Hazard ClassificationFitness equipment shall beclassified as potentially hazardous. If attention is not paid tothe conditio
27、ns of equipment usage, death or serious injurycould occur.5.1.2 Signal WordThe signal word for this label shall beWARNING.5.1.3 Label DesignDesign of the label shall comply withthe following recommendations for signal word and signal iconplacement, signal word panel design and color, message stylean
28、d content, and letter size and placement (see Fig. 1).5.1.3.1 Label OrientationVertical or horizontal label ori-entation may be used (see Fig. 1).5.1.3.2 Pictorial PanelPictorials may be used providedthey have been tested in accordance with ANSI Z535 for useracceptance and understandability and give
29、 the user immediaterecognition of the applicable hazard(s).5.1.3.3 BorderA contrast shall exist between the label andthe mounting location on the fitness equipment. It is preferablethat a border measuring at least 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) surround theentire label. When this is not possible, such as when th
30、e generalwarning label is incorporated into an instruction plate orcontrol panel, a contrast shall exist between the warnings andthe remainder of the words or instructions present on thecontrol panel or instruction panel. This contrast shall beachieved by making the background of the warning a diffe
31、rentcolor or shade than the remainder of the instruction/controlpanel.5.1.3.4 ColorWhen the general label is to be applied tothe fitness equipment, and it is not to be incorporated within theinstruction plate or control panel, the signal word panel shall besafety orange. The remainder of the label s
32、hall be white, orpossess a significant contrast with the black sans serif text ofthe message panel. A border as defined in 5.1.3.3 shall bepresent. When the general warning is incorporated within aninstruction or control panel, special circumstances may pre-clude the use of the color parameters deta
33、iled above. The signalword panel and the general warning message panel area shallachieve significant contrast with the rest of the instruction plateor control panel. This shall be accomplished by bordering orF1749 152incorporating, or both, contrasting colors or shades. In no caseshall the signal wo
34、rd panel be yellow, red, or green when thesignal word WARNING is used. In no case shall the messagepanel be yellow, red, or green when the signal word WARNINGis used.5.1.3.5 LetteringStatement of hazard lettering and signalword WARNING shall be black and sans serif. Upper or lowercase letters may be
35、 used within the statement of hazard. Thesignal word shall be all upper case letters. The bottom of thesignal icon shall be in line with the bottom of the signal word.(1) Letter SizeThe letter size comprising the statement ofhazard shall be a minimum of 1.5 mm (0.06 in.) in height. Thesignal word sh
36、all be a minimum of 4 mm (0.16 in.) in heightand at least 50 % greater size than the words comprising thestatement of hazard. When the general warning label isincluded within the instructions of the control panel or exerciseinstruction plate, the letter size for the statement of hazard shallbe equal
37、 to or exceed the minimum letter height used for theheight of all other words.5.1.3.6 Mounting LocationThe label shall be positionedwhere it will be encountered by the user prior to commencingexercise.5.1.3.7 Material and Expected LifeThe label shall beprinted on durable material using fade resistan
38、t inks or paints.The label shall not be obliterated through normal use orforeseeable misuse. Advisement shall be given in the ownersmanual to replace the label if it becomes damaged or illegible.5.1.4 Minimum WordingAt a minimum, the label mustaddress the following items:5.1.4.1 The possibility of s

If the equipment has thepotential to cause injury to children, then this statement shallbe designed and placed within this label in
40、 such a manner thatit draws specific attention to this requirement.5.1.4.3 All warnings and instructions be read and followedand, for institutional fitness equipment, that proper instructionbe obtained prior to use.5.1.4.4 For consumer fitness equipment, notice shall also begiven to refer to the own
41、ers manual for additional warningsand safety information.5.1.4.5 For institutional fitness equipment, cease exercise ifyou feel faint or dizzy.5.1.4.6 For institutional fitness equipment, keep body,clothing, and fitness accessories clear of all moving parts.5.1.4.7 For institutional fitness equipmen
42、t, inspect theequipment before use and to not use if the machine appearsdamaged or inoperable.5.1.4.8 For fitness equipment that displays heart rate, astatement shall be present indicating that the heart rate dis-played may be inaccurate and should be used for referenceonly. This warning may be part
43、 of the general warning label orplaced in proximity to the heart rate displayed. For consumerfitness equipment, this warning may be placed in the ownersmanual.5.1.4.9 Specific additional items that may be addressed inexisting ASTM standards for particular fitness equipment.5.2 Site Specific Label De
44、sign:5.2.1 Hazard ClassificationClassifications established in4.1 shall be used.5.2.2 Signal Word The signal words caution, warning anddanger set forth in 3.1.15 and defined in 4.1 generally shall beused. However, these signal words are not required if pictorialsare used in accordance with 5.2.3.2.5
45、.2.3 Label DesignLabel design shall comply with appli-cable ANSI standards for signal word placement, surroundshape, signal word panel design, signal icon, statement ofhazard, letter size, and placement.5.2.3.1 Label OrientationVertical or horizontal label ori-entation may be used. (see Fig. 2).5.2.
46、3.2 PictorialsPictorials may be used provided theyhave been tested in accordance with ANSI Z535 for useracceptance and understandability and give the user immediaterecognition of the applicable hazard(s). A signal word is notrequired if the proper surround shape is used in accordancewith applicable
47、ANSI standards. (see Fig. 2).(1) Surround ShapeThe surround shape shall comply withapplicable ANSI standards. Surround shapes for site specificlabels alerting users to potential hazards in the immediate areaof the equipment shall be a triangle or diamond. Pictorials thatare used as part of a multi-p
48、anel label are not required to havesurround shapes. The shape of the site specific label may serveas the surround shape.5.2.3.3 BorderThe border shall conform to 5.1.3.3.5.2.3.4 ColorThe color of the signal word panel shallmatch the designation defined by 4.2. The remainder of thelabel shall follow
49、the guidelines of 5.1.3.4. If a pictorial only isused, the color shall match the criteria defined in the applicableANSI standards, as follows:(1) DangerWhite image on a safety red background.(2) WarningBlack image on a safety orange background.(3) CautionBlack image on a safety yellow background.5.2.3.5 LetteringIn accordance with ANSI Z535, all let-tering must be sans serif and may be a combination of upperand lower case letters.(1) Letter SizeThe letter size shall conform to 5.1.3.5 (1).5.2.3.6 Mounting LocationSite s
