This portion usually consists of the midsection (or spool) and the buryelbow. This is one of two major sect

、ions that make up wet-barrel hydrants.2. Cast iron: Includes gray iron and ductile iron.3. Cosmetic defect: A blemish that has no effect on the ability of thecomponent to meet the structural design and production test requirements of thisstandard. Should the blemish or the activity of plugging, weld

、ing, grinding, orrepairing of such blemish cause the component to fail these requirements, theblemish shall be considered a structural defect.4. Flange connection: The bolted connection used to fasten the hydrant topsection (whether a single-piece or two-piece unit) to the bury section.5. Hydrant as

、sembly: The hydrant top section and bury section assembledat the bolted flange connection.6. Hydrant barrel: The portion of a two-piece hydrant top section(aboveground) that connects the hydrant head and the bury section.7. Hydrant head: When the hydrant top section is constructed as atwo-piece unit

、, the hydrant head is the portion containing the valve mechanism andoutlet nozzles.*Federal Specification available from Naval Publications and Forms Center, 5801 Tabor Avenue,Philadelphia, PA 19120.Military Specifications and Standards available from Naval Publications and Forms Center, 5801Tabor A

、 hydrant. This is one of two major sections that make up wet-barrelhydrants.9. Manufacturer: The party that manufactures, fabricates, or producesmaterials or products.10. Purchaser: The person, company, or organization that purchases anymaterials or work to be performed.11. Structural defect: A flaw

、 that causes the component to fail the structuraldesign or test requirements of this standard. This includes, but is not limited to,imperfections that result in leakage through the walls of a casting, failure to meet theminimum wall thickness requirement, or failure to meet production tests.SECTION

、4: REQUIREMENTSSec. 4.1 PermeationThe selection of materials is critical for water service and distribution piping inlocations where there is likelihood the hydrant will be exposed to significantconcentrations of pollutants comprised of low molecular weight petroleum productsor organic solvents or t

、heir vapors. Research has documented that pipe materials, such as polyethylene, polybutylene, polyvinyl chloride, and asbestoscement, andelastomers, such as used in jointing gaskets and packing glands, are subject topermeation by lower molecular weight organic solvents or petroleum products. If awate

、r pipe and hydrant must pass through such a contaminated area or an areasubject to contamination, consult with the manufacturer regarding permeation ofpipe walls, jointing materials, etc., before selecting materials for use in that area.Sec. 4.2 Data to Be Supplied by the PurchaserIf the purchaser h

、as any special requirements, such as unusual connections, nozzles, nozzle threads, caps, or operating nuts, the purchaser shall supply thenecessary drawings, samples, or both to the manufacturer.Sec. 4.3 Drawings or Data to Be Supplied by the Manufacturer4.3.1 Catalog and maintenance data. After purc

、hase, the manufacturer shall, when required, supply catalog data (including illustrations and a schedule of partsCopyright American Water Works Association Provided by IHS under license with AWWA Not for ResaleNo reproduction or networking permitted without license from IHS-,-,-6 AWWA C503-05and the

、materials from which they are made) in sufficient detail to serve as a guidefor the assembly and disassembly of the hydrant, as well as for ordering repair parts. The manufacturer, when required, shall also supply maintenance informationnecessary for keeping the hydrant in proper working condition.4.

、3.2 Net weight. When required, the manufacturer shall supply a statementthat lists the total net assembled weight of the hydrant top section and completehydrant assembly for each size of hydrant ordered.4.3.3 Drawings. When required, the manufacturer shall submit two sets ofdrawings showing principa

、l dimensions, construction details, and materials forconsideration by the purchaser. The purchaser shall return one set of drawingsindicating acceptance to the manufacturer. No work shall be done or hydrantssupplied that do not conform with these drawings. If required by the purchaser, themanufactur

、er shall supply additional copies of the drawings.Sec. 4.4 MaterialsMaterials shall comply with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Actand other federal requirements. 4.4.1 General. Materials designated in this standard, when used in hydrantsproduced according to this standard, shall conform

、 to the referenced standardsdesignated for each material listed.4.4.2 Physical and chemical properties of components. The physical and chem-ical requirements of hydrant components shall be as required by the AWWA, ANSI,ASTM, or other standards to which reference is made.4.4.3 Gray iron. Gray cast iron shall conform to ANSI/AWWA C110/A21.10; ASTM A126, C
