ANSI BHMA A156.34-2016 BORED LOCKS AND MORTISE LOCKS WITH LIGATURE RESISTANT TRIM.pdf

、 1 ANSI/BHMA A156.34-2016 AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD for BORED LOCKS AND MORTISE LOCKS WITH LIGATURE RESISTANT TRIM SPONSOR BUILDERS HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION American National Standards Institute Approved December 22, 2016 2 AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD An American National Standard implies

、a consensus of those substantially concerned with its scope and provisions. An American National Standard is intended as a guide to aid the manufacturer, the consumer and the general public. The existence of an American National Standard does not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he has approv

American National Standards are subject to periodic review and users are cautioned to obtain the latest editions. CAUTION NOTICE: This American National Stan

The standard seeks to provide residents in such an environ

、ment with reasonable personal freedom and quality of life while at the same time to diminish the risks of self-harm and inappropriate uses by the residents and others. However, facilities differ as to environmental design, need for accessibility, tolerance of patient risk and other factors. Accordin

、gly, the facility should assess all such factors in making a product selection. Performance tests and, where necessary, material and dimensional requirements have been established to promote safety and product stability. As is true of all its standards, BHMA plans to update and revise this standard

、on a regular basis and welcomes input from users at any time. 4 1. SCOPE 1.1 This Standard defines requirements and test methods for ligature resistant trim on bored locks and mortise locks. These requirements apply to the exposed parts of the lockset on the face of the door in the closed position o

、nly. 1.2 Tests described in this Standard are performed under laboratory conditions. In actual usage, results vary because of installation, maintenance and environmental conditions. 1.3 Level Qualifications. Manufacturers shall indicate the Level that their trim meets (i.e. Level A, B or C) for each

、 side of the door. The product Level is established based on testing the Ligature Resistant Trim to the requirements established in Section 4. The inside and outside trim shall be evaluated and rated individually unless they are identical; it is acceptable for only one side to meet a level. 2. GENER

、AL 2.1 For certification to this standard, the ligature resistant product shall be subjected to and meet the Grade 1 requirements of the applicable standard, ANSI A156.2-2011 for Bored and Preassembled Locksets, or ANSI/BHMA A156.13-2012 for Mortise Locks. The manufacturer is permitted to request a

、waiver of all or a portion of the BHMA tests by presenting an engineering analysis demonstrating the products similarity to a device currently in an ongoing certification program. The analysis must clearly show the mechanical characteristics were not affected by the ligature resistant features. The

、Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory responsible for the certification program must agree with the analysis. 2.2 Separate lock models that accept the same ligature resistant trim shall be evaluated individually, unless waived by engineering evaluation. 2.4 Reference to other Standards This stand

、ard and ANSI Standards referenced in this Standard are available from: American National Standards Institute, Inc., 11 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036 or . 2.5 Dimensions All dimensions are given in US units with approximate SI (metric) conversions. Where plus or minus tolerances are not given,

、 values are permitted to be correspondingly reduced or exceeded at the option of the manufacturer within the functional limitations of the product. 2.6 Tamper Resistance of Exposed Fasteners All exposed fasteners shall be tamperproof designs and installed utilizing a thread locking feature. 3. DEFIN

、ITIONS 3.1 Preassembled Lock (Series 2000) A lock fitting into a notched cutout in a door. 3.2 Bored Lock (Series 4000) A lock installed in a round bored opening in the edge and face of a door. 3.3 Face (of Door) The surface of the door exposed to view when the door is closed. 3.4 Mortise Lock (Seri

、es 1000) A lock or latch fitting into a mortised cavity prepared in the edge of a door. The bolts are operated by knobs, levers, turns, thumb pieces, paddles or cylinders engaging the mortise lock or latch through holes prepared in the faces of the door. 3.5 Ligature Resistant Trim Any exposed parts

、 of the lockset on the face of the door designed to inhibit the attachment of ligatures. 4. TESTING 4.1 Ligature Test Procedure 4.1.1 Test Materials Locksets shall be tested using these ligature materials: Heavyweight cowhide leather strip (Tandy 4526-00), 8 to 9 oz. gage (thickness), one inch (2.5

、cm) by 50 inches (1.3 m). Storage shall be out of direct light at room temperature, with a three year shelf life, and usage of each piece limited to ten tests. Guitar string bronze wound on hexagonal shape high carbon steel core .052 +/- .002 inch thickness, 36 inch length, barrel removed (DAddario

、E String/Bronze or equivalent). No modification of the ligature is permitted (e.g. no shredding or separation of the ligature). Knotting of the ligature is permitted. 4.1.2 Ligatures shall have a force gauge attached to the end that is being pulled. The ligature will be attached and pulled direction

、ally in 18 degree increments as well as in sweeping motion in counter and counterclockwise directions within the shaded area in 4.2 for the level of which the trim is being tested. The ligature may be attached to any of the exposed parts of the lockset on the face of the door and pulled to within 2”

、 of the face of the door. The operating trim is allowed to be set in any position prior to or during attachment of the ligature. As a minimum, all the following attachment methods shall be attempted: looping around or tying off to any trim component on the surface of the door; or by being knotted, j

、ammed, wrapped, and wedged into openings, crevices, or operating clearances. The full length of the test material is permitted to be used for attachment (such as wrapping) leaving enough material to affix a force gage. No tools shall be permitted in the attachment of the ligature. 4.1.3 Testing shal

、l be performed on a single unit by a single evaluator using a single ligature at a time. The evaluation shall be performed for ten minutes per tested grading level. No interruptions shall be permitted. 5 4.2 Ligature Testing Requirements Grading Levels A B C The force gauge does not exceed 11 lbf in

、 any direction from the attachment point within the shaded area, or no attachment at all. The force gauge does not exceed 11 lbf in any direction from the attachment point within the shaded area, or no attachment at all. The force gauge does not exceed 11 lbf in any direction that is within the 15 d

、egree wedge (vertical, 2” from the face of the door, to 15 degrees away from the 2” from door face plane ) in an arc from straight down from the attachment point to 90 degrees from the attachment point away from the latch edge of the door, or no attachment at all. 6 APPENDIX (Not Part of ANSI/BHMA A

、156.34) A-1 The 11 pound pull force selected for the ligature testing was based on information found in the Wisconsin Medical Journal 2003, Volume 102, No 3. A-2 Distribution and possession of dental floss is generally controlled in mental health facilities. A-3 In the creation of this standard, BHM

、A consulted with mental health facilities, architects, and other experts to develop the criteria herein. Many publications such as The Design Guide for the Built Environment of Behavioral Health Facilities by the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems were also studied. A-4 It is not pos

、sible to imagine or prevent all efforts to compromise or misuse ligature attachments that may occur in a special care environment. BHMA plans to update the standard regularly as new information and developments become available. A-5 Certification testing is limited to a single designated independent test lab for better repeatability and consistency. 7
