PURPOSEThe purpose of this Standard is to establish nationally recognized dimensions for builderstemplate hinges which are used on
、 metal doors and frames. This Standard is intended to assurethe interchangeability of template hinges and to provide a uniform method for templateidentification.2. SCOPE AND CLASSIFICATION2.1 Scope: This Standard covers the requirements for the length, width, thickness, offset, andscrew hole spacing
、 for builders template hinges. Included in the standard are hinge identificationsymbols and screw sizes. Methods for identifying template hinges that conform to the Standardare provided.2.2 Classification: This Standard covers the following types of builders template hinges:2.2.1 Full mortise hinge
、- A hinge designed for mortising into the butt edge of the door andinto the rabbet edge of the door frame. Used generally with steel frames and steel doors.2.2.2 Full surface hinge - A hinge designed to be applied to the surface of the door and thesurface of the door frame. Used generally with chann
、el iron frames and metal covered doors.2.2.3 Half mortise hinge - A hinge designed to be mortised into the butt edge of the door andapplied to the surface of the door frame. Used generally with channel iron frames and steeldoors.2.2.4 Half surface hinge - A hinge designed to be applied to the surfac
、e of the door andmortised into the rabbet edge of the door frame. Used generally with steel frames and metalcovered doors.2.2.5 Slip-in hinge - A hinge designed for one or both leaves to slide into a cavity preparedin a door or door frame thus concealing one or both hinge leaves. Used generally with
、 aluminumframes and doors.2.2.6 Swing clear hinge - A hinge designed to swing a door completely clear of the openingwhen the door is opened 90 to 95 degrees. It can be full mortise, full surface, half mortise or halfsurface. Used generally with frames and doors as described in 2.2.1 through 2.2.4 as
、 applicable.3. REQUIREMENTS3.1 General: Products represented as complying with this Standard shall meet all of therequirements specified herein.3.2 Types, Sizes, and Dimensions: The types, sizes, and dimensions of the hinges covered bythis standard shall be as specified in Figures 1 through 24. The
、figures are for illustration only toassist in identifying the hinge types and in locating dimensions. All dimensions are in inches andmillimeters. The figures do not show requirements for the design, type of bearings, or contour ofthe offset. The tolerances for the specified dimensions shall be as f

、dth 0.015 (0.38)3.2.1 Variable dimensions: The offset dimensions and machine screw sizes are includedwith the template dimensions for each hinge. Hinges that are represented as conforming to thisStandard and which comply with the template dimensions but vary in the recommended screwsizes, shall be a
、ccompanied by information clearly describing the variation. The off-sets shownherein for half surface, half mortise and all swing clear hinges may be smaller or greateraccording to the individual manufacturers regular practice, provided that the widths of affectedleaves are changed to conform with a
、ny increase or decrease in offset. The template dimensionsshall not be affected by such modifications.3.2.2 Template identification symbols: The first letter of the symbol indicates thethickness:A = Standard weight and B = heavy weight. The next two digits indicate the vertical height ofhinge; for e
、xample, 20 = 2 inch (50.8 mm), 25 = 2 1/2 inch (63.5 mm), 30 = 3 inch (76.2mm), 35= 3 1/2 inch (88.9 mm), etc. The last letter(s), indicate(s) the type of hinge: M = full mortise, H= half surface, HM = half mortise and S = full surface, SMA = slip-in with one leaf in cavity(normally jamb leaf), SMB
、= slip-in with both leaves in cavities, the suffix S added to M, H, HMor S = swing clear in full mortise half surface, etc. Thus A45MS indicates a standard weight fullmortise swing clear hinge in 4 1/2 in (114.3 mm) size.3.3 Full Mortise Hinges: The leaves of full mortise template hinges shall have
、straight edgesand square or radius corners. Each leaf shall be shaped so that the leaves shall be parallel whenthe hinge is opened 1/16 inch, + .015 inch (1.59 mm + 0.38 mm).3.4 Half Surface, Full Surface and Half Mortise Hinges: The surface leaves of fullsurface, half surface and half mortise hinge
、s shall have beveled edges. The mortise leaves of halfmortise and half surface hinges shall have straight edges and square or radius corners.Copyright Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association Inc.
