、AN NATIONAL STANDARD Pressure Regulator Hydrostatic Shell Test Method 1. PURPOSE 1.1. To provide guidelines and procedures for conducting production hydrostatic tests of pressure regulator shells and reporting results for manufacturers of pressure regulators. 2. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS 2.1. This stand

、ard establishes a method for conducting production hydrostatic testing of pressure regulator shells having bodies, bonnets, casings, and spring cases manufactured from any materials. 2.2. This standard covers the hydrostatic testing of pressure regulator shells as components for use by manufacturers

、, users, specifiers and approval agencies to validate the structural integrity and leak tightness of the regulators pressure retaining parts used in the manufacture of pressure regulators. 2.3. This standard includes pressure regulators which may have two static pressure ratings, one for the portion

、 of the regulator subjected to the inlet pressure and the other for the portion subjected to the outlet pressure. 2.4. This standard does not cover proof of design hydrotesting, which is addressed in ANSI/FCI 79-1-2009. 2.5. This standard is not intended to supersede existing standards for regulator

、s in specific applications such as those for gas appliance pressure regulators, for high pressure regulators for gas cylinders, or for fluid power regulators in machinery operations. 3. DEFINITIONS 3.1. Regulator. A pressure regulator as covered by this standard is a self contained and self powered

、device that serves to automatically maintain a pressure at a controlled value over a specified flow range. 3.2. Maximum Operational Pressure. The maximum inlet or outlet pressure at which the regulator will perform within the manufacturers specification. 3.3. Base Test Pressure. This shall be determ

、ined from the maximum operational pressure for the pressure regulator shell under test. For pressure regulator body shells this should be the maximum operating pressure for the bodys pressure shell or the bodys flange pressure rating, whichever is less. 3.4. Pressure Regulator Shells. The pressure r

、etaining components subjected to the process fluid. 3.5. Flange Pressure Rating. The maximum rated pressure of the connecting flange end at 100F (38C). 3.6. Hydrostatic Shell Test Pressure. A base test pressure multiplied by 1.5 of the pressure shell under test. 3.7. Proof of Design Hydrotesting. Pr

、oof testing of component design in order to derive a pressure rating is covered in ANSI/FCI 79-1-2009. 2 3.8. Test Fluid. The fluid used as the pressure media for the component under test. 4. GENERAL 4.1. This standard includes pressure regulators which may have two static pressure ratings, one for

、the portion subjected to the inlet pressure and the other for the portion subjected to the outlet pressure. 4.2. The base test pressures on pressure regulator body shells shall be determined from the maximum operational pressure rating or the pressure flange rating, whichever is less. For other pres

、sure regulator shells, base test pressures should be derived from the maximum operational pressure for the chamber at 100F (38C). 4.3. If the pressure regulator body shell being tested has different pressure ratings for the inlet side chamber and the outlet side chamber, the manufacturer and/or cust

、omer can decide on testing to the lowest base test pressure of the body shell under test or if possible, separate the chambers and hydrotest based upon the base test pressure of each chamber. Either method is acceptable as some pressure regulator body shells with two ratings are not able to withstan

、d testing at the higher base test pressure without damaging the pressure shell. 5. TEST REQUIREMENTS 5.1. Pressure regulator shells test fluid shall be water. The test fluid may contain a corrosion inhibitor such that the mixtures viscosity is not greater than that of the water at a temperature not

、over 125 F or 52 C. 5.2. All pressure cavities of the pressure regulator shell being subject to the hydrostatic shell test shall be simultaneously pressurized. 5.3. The test may be conducted without trim material or the internal parts that are in contact with the test fluid. 5.4. A flexible element

、such as a diaphragm, bellows, or similar item which cannot perform its function if subjected to hydrostatic shell test pressures may be replaced with a stronger, non-functional member during this test. If the flexible element remains in the shell during testing it may concurrently be subjected to th

、e hydrostatic shell test pressure on both sides of the element. 5.5. Special high strength bolts and nuts may be used for clamping the pressure regulator shell under test. 5.6. Each pressure regulator shell chamber shall be subjected to, and shall withstand without visually detectable leakage throug

、h the pressure boundary walls, a base test pressure multiplied by 1.5 the 100F (38C) pressure rating of the component under test for a minimum period of time as listed in Table 1. This pressure shall be recorded as the hydrostatic shell test pressure on the production certificate. 5.7. If one compon

、ent with two separate chambers are tested with two different hydrostatic shell test pressures, both chambers pressures shall be recorded as the hydrostatic shell test pressure on the production certificate for their respective chambers. 5.8. The manufacturers appointed test facility shall be respons

、ible for maintaining the accuracy of the pressure measuring instruments. 3 5.9. Pressure measuring instruments shall be accurate within 5% of reading at test pressure and analog types shall be used between 20% and 80% of their scaled range. 6. ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS 6.1. Any visually detected weeping

、or leaking through the pressure boundary part walls shall be cause for rejection. 6.2. Distortion due to hydrostatic testing that impairs the part from functioning correctly shall be cause for rejection. 7. MARKINGS 7.1. Components successfully hydrotested should be marked with a symbol indicating t

、he completion and acceptance of the hydrotest. The symbol is up to the manufacture and/or purchaser to agree upon as some pressure regulator shells may not be suitable for marking. Table 1 Minimum Test Duration (Minutes) The minimum duration of test pressure before start of inspection shall be as fo
