This standard presents the general, physical, and magnetic requirements for achieving unrecorded media interchange between compatible rigid disk storage applications, using either fixed or removable media. Subsequent standards ma

11、y specify other disks with different storage and performance capabilities, or additional requirements for this media, relevant to higher levels of inter- change in a specific application. Due to the variety of possible applications of the stan- dardized media, whether used singly or in multiple-fixe

12、d disk machines, or in removable disk cartridges and packs, there has been no attempt to define data format or data inter- change requirements at the single disk level. Technical Committee X3B7 on Magnetic Disks, which developed this standard, consists of a group of experienced and qualified special

13、ists on rigid disk media and the associated disk storage drives. In the development of this standard, careful consideration was given to current practices, existing equipment, and applicable standards being developed inter- nally. This standard was approved as an American National Standard by the Am

Scope 1 .l This standard provides the mechanical, physical, and magnetic properties of a magnetic disk with a 7.874-in (200-mm) diameter and low surface friction intended for mounting in data storage devices. A typi- cal recording density is 480 tpi with 6858 flux transi- tions p

47、er inch (ftpi) at a radius of 2.224 in (56,49 mm). 1.2 This standard defines the requirements and sup- porting test methods necessary to ensure acceptable performance levels in the context of the general appli- cation referenced above. It is distinct from a specifica- tion in that it delineates a mi

48、nimum of restrictions consistent with compatibility of media characteristics. 1.3 The performance levels contained in this standard represent the minimum acceptable levels of perfor- mance for typical applications. They, therefore, repre- sent the performance levels that the media should meet or sur

49、pass during their useful life. The performance levels in this standard are intended as guidelines to prospective users and should not be employed as sub- stitutes for purchase specifications. 1.4 Quantitative performance levels that must be met or exceeded in order to comply with this standard are given wherever possible.
