14、) This standard presents the minimum requirements for the physical and magnetic interchangeability of I/2 in. (12.65 mm) wide magnetic tape in a cartridge to be used for information processing systems and associated equipment utilizing a standard code for information interchange. This standard compl

15、ements ANSI X3.181-1990, American National Standard for Information Systems - Recorded Magnetic Tape and Cartridge for Information Interchange, I/2 in. (12.65 mm), Serial Serpentine, 22-Track, 6 667 bpi (262 bpmm) and 48-Track, IO 000 bpi (394 bpmm), MFM Recording. This standard evolved from a need

16、for a compact l/2 in. (12.65 mm) tape car- tridge for use in small form factor magnetic tape drives. This was accomplished by winding 600 feet (183 meters) of I/2 in. (12.65 mm) wide magnetic tape onto a reel inside of a small (4 in. by 4 in. by 1 in.) self-loading cartridge. The result is a I/2 in.

17、 (12.65 mm) tape cartridge media which facilitates the design of high capacity, small form factor magnetic tape drives. The X3B5 Technical Committee on Digital Magnetic Tape, which developed this standard, consists of a number of experienced and qualified specialists on the recording of digital info

18、rmation on magnetic tape. In the development of this standard, careful consideration was given to current practices, existing equip- ment and supplies and the broadest possible acceptance, and to providing a basis for future improvement in the use of the medium. This standard was approved as an Amer

19、ican National Standard on March 29, 1991. Suggestions for the improvement of this standard will be welcome. 27、nal amplitude of the original 1 F recording frequency. 3.11 peak shift: The time displacement of adjacent read-back signal peaks from the cor- responding written timing. 3.12 physical recording density: The number of recorded flux transitions per unit length of track, e.g., flux transitions per inch

28、 (ftpi) or flux transitions per millimeter (ftpmm). 3.13 pre-record condition: The required remanent moment of the tape prior to record- ing data or testing. 3.14 recording frequency: The frequency of the flux transitions on the tape resulting from a specific data pattern The 2F frequency is produce

29、d by the all ONES or the all ZEROS pattern. The 1F frequency is produced by the 0101010101. pattern. 3.15 recording mode A: A mode of opera- tion in which the 2F physical recording density is equal to 6 667 ftpi (262 ftpmm) and the 1F physical recording density is equal to 3 333 ftpi (131 ftpmm). 3.

30、16 recording mode B: A mode of opera- tion in which the 2F physical recording density is equal to 10 000 ftpi (394 ftpmm) and the 1 F physical recording density is equal to 5 000 ftpi (197 ftpmm). 3.17 reference field: The typical field of the master standard reference tape. 3.18 resistance per squa

31、re: The surface resistance of a square area, of any size, mea- sured between electrodes placed on two opposite sides of the square. The unit of mea- surement is the ohm. 3.19 resolution: The ratio of the average signal amplitude at the 2F physical recording density to that at the 1F physical recordi

32、ng density. 3.20 secondary standard reference tape: A tape the performance of which is known and stated in relation to that of the master stan- dard reference tape. NOTE - Secondary standard reference tapes for this standard are being developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (

33、NIST), and will be available from the NIST Office of Standard Reference Materials, Room 8311, Chemistry Building, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD 20899. It is intended that these be used for cali- brating further reference tapes for use in routine calibration. 3.21 s

34、tandard measurement current (I,): Is 1.5 times the standard reference current (I,). (I, = 1.5 x I,). 3.22 standard reference amplitude: The average signal amplitude from the master standard reference tape when it is recorded with the standard measurement current on the NIST measurement system at the

35、 2F physical recording density. Traceability to the standard reference amplitude is provided by the calibra- tion factors supplied with each secondary standard reference tape. 3.23 standard reference current (I,): Is the current that produces the reference field. 3.24 track: A longitudinal area on t

36、he tape along which a series of magnetic signals can be recorded. 3.25 typical field: The minimum recording field, which, when applied to the magnetic tape under test, will cause an average signal amplitude equal to 95 percent of the maximum average signal amplitude at the selected 2F physical recor

37、ding density. 4 Environment and safety Unless otherwise stated, the conditions speci- fied below refer to the ambient conditions in the test or computer room and not to those within the tape equipment. 4.1 Cartridge and tape testing environment Unless otherwise stated, tests and measure- ments made

38、on the cartridge and tape to check the requirements of this standard shall be carried out under the following conditions: - Temperature: 73F a 4F (23C + 2C) - Relative humidity: 40% to 60% 4.1 .l Conditioning before testing The cartridge shall be exposed to the testing environment for 24 hours. 4.2

39、Cartridge operating environment Cartridges used for data interchange shall be capable of operating under the following con- ditions: 3 ANSI X3.1 97-1991 - Ambient temperature: 50F to 120F strong yet flexible layer of ferromagnetic (10C to 48C) material dispersed in a suitable binder. 41、tation a cartridge has been exposed to conditions outside the above val- ues, it shall be conditioned before use by exposure to the operating environment for a time equal to or greater than the time away from the operating environment. Conditioning times in excess of 24 hours are not required. 4.3 C

42、artridge storage environment Cartridges shall be stored under the following conditions: The tape length between the BOT and EOT holes shall be 625 feet * 5 feet (190.5 meters f 1.5 meters). Additional requirements are shown in figure 13. 5.3 Width The width of the tape shall be 0.4980 inch f 0.0010

43、inch (12.650 mm f 0.025 mm). The width shall be measured across the tape from edge to edge when the tape is under a tension of less than 1.0 ozf (0.28 N). 5.4 Total thickness - Temperature. 60F to 90F (16C to 32C) The total thickness of the tape at any point shall be between 980 pin (24.9 pm) and 11

44、00 l.un (27.9 pm). - Relative humidity: 20% to 80% - Maximum wet bulb temperature: 80F (26C) 5.5 Base-material thickness The thickness of the base material shall be 850 win (21.6 vrn) nominal. 5.6 Discontinuity 4.4 Transportation There shall be no discontinuities in the tape Recommendations for tran
